This is an olive ridley sea turtle egg.  There are seven beaches in the world that olive ridley turtles use for an “arribada” or large scale synchronized nesting. Two of these beaches are located in Nicaragua. Nesting takes place at night.  We arrived on the tail end of this particular “arribada” that lasted about a week. Day 1 had about 300 turtles. Day 2, 1200 turtles. Day 3, 4, 5 and 6 each had over 6200 turtles lay eggs.  Each turtle lays 100 eggs.  During this particular “arribada” about 3,000,000 eggs were laid.  One week after this photo was taken another similar “arribada” took place.    (at Reserva Natural Playa La Flor)

Growing up my parents used to torture me by making me weed our vegetable garden every day in the hot sun during the summer. Although I never anticipated this, now I know why. It was to prep me for my life in Nicaragua. My primary responsibility here at Corazon Contento is to make this garden look pretty. I must say I'm doing a dang good job. This is a picture of David helping out in the garden. He was my gardening buddy this week. He started gardening with me when he was looking for an excuse out of his normal daily chores. It turns out that David also goes to our same church. I was washing my hands in the bathroom and I look up to see Someone in Spanish say, "Hey, I'm here. Do you recognize me?" It was David. The garden and I are going to be real tight for the next year or so. While Jess is out being super woman helping both adolescents and adults with disability, I'm the garden man. I'll be volunteering at the center one day a week. They found out that I work online. To them this means that I'm a computer/programming wiz. They want me to help run their technology center and help with their website too. Here's to a life of being a programming farmer for the next year. Pretty excited about it.
