        Kaine really doesn’t do feelings. He doesn’t do love and he certainly doesn’t want to feed himself the illusion of love when he’s seen — times and time again — how love is just a lie. Why would he offer some kind of false comfort when he knows that the cold, hard truth is that life is nothing but pain?

        Kaine knows that happiness is something not for men like him. Happiness… such a terrifying thought. He’d only known suffering and tragedy. That’s all. Happiness was odd and comforting… in a way he can’t describe. But this world is all too cold and Kaine doesn’t deserve happiness, does he? Maybe it’s meant for other men.

        Years ago, back in Salt Lake City, Kaine met a woman named Louise Kennedy. He thought that she was his hope — that as he held her close, he was clinging to his own salvation. But after one fateful night where he realized she was as corrupt as the scum he sought out to kill, he realized that he’d been a fool to ever fall victim to such illusion. Love? Well, gosh, that was the biggest illusion of all.

        Louise Kennedy was a “dirty cop”, so to speak. She was corrupt. Kaine killed her after she betrayed him and, even after that, he refuses to forget her. He’s still holding on to her, even after what he did. Holding on tightly.

        Love is a foreign concept to Kaine. Love is, perhaps, for Peter Parker and the ravishing MJ Watson. Maybe, at a time, for Ben Reilly and Elizabeth Tyne. Kaine is undeserving of love. But most of all, Kaine can’t and won’t love. He refuses to. Love is a dirty lie; an illusion brought forth by humans to deceive. It only ends in pain and, boy, does Kaine ever know that.
