To my fellow Sheith shippers:
Keith fell first
Shiro fell harder

Happy (Belated) Birthday Shiro

But Why Does No One Talk About Pining Shiro?
I have a bone to pick with the Sheith fandom. Everywhere in this fandom I see Keith freaking out about Shiro, which I will admit is completely canon. But you know what else is canon?
Shiro’s bias for Keith.
I know that it’s seems subtle, but it’s not at the same time. I rewatched Voltron Season 1 and 2 before Season 3 because I noticed that I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to Shiro the first time around. A lot of his lines are pretty generic-leader-type, but during me rewatch, I noticed that his character cues weren’t. So, without further ado, here begins my long meta post about how Shiro is pining after Keith.

I did actually yeah! But that was back when season 2 had just come out and we had that whole little plot line between them, and I thought there’d be more followup to it :( There were some things happened later on–mainly, all the buildup for allur/ance and the new conflict between Allura and Keith. Before, I thought ka/llura had the potential to work. But The Hunted clearly cemented it for me that it wasn’t happening. Allura is really struggling at first, and it’s clear she can’t handle keeping up. But Keith refuses to slow down for her. Keith tells her to just deal with it.
Most telling of all, Keith throws her own words right back at her–when everyone wanted Keith to give up on Shiro, Allura said, “But our mission is bigger than any one individual.” When Keith lashes out at Allura in The Hunted, he goes, “We have a mission that’s more important than any one of us.” Ultimately, the lesson he took from them is this–if the mission is more important than Shiro, than it must be more important than everyone else too. If he has to be willing to sacrifice Shiro, then he’ll sure as hell drop everyone else too. Keith internalized what Allura said, let it tear up and eat away at him.
His grieving process was brutally cut short, and it really shows. His entire arc in season 3 made one thing really clear to me–he will always love Shiro first and foremost, and no one else will ever replace him in his heart. And I simply cannot see him ever liking Allura–or anyone else–more. He would be happiest with Shiro, and vice versa. To me, there’s a lot more depth and compatibility–and actual mutual interest–between Lance and Allura. I just wouldn’t want to split up either pair.
As someone who also thought about Kallura a lot in S1 thanks to nostalgic memories of DotU, this all tracks. Just like with Acxa later on, the writers made it clear through Keith’s actions and words that while he will help others where he can, the only person that truly matters to him on a deep emotional level is Shiro.
And then on top of that, if anyone hints at Keith being romantically interested in a woman, it flies right over his head. I’d have to look up the scene, but I swear I remember Lance being jealous and Keith being baffled by it. He’s straight up dismissive when Ezor makes her comment about him and Acxa. Women simply aren’t on his radar when it comes to romance. (Just like we have zero instances in canon that show Lance as interested in men.)
And while it was a bit jerky in places, the Allurance development is right there onscreen, without the complications of the Sheith backstory being delayed from S2 to S7.
