Playing Elsword and knowing what it’s actually like, their advertisements are so cheesy, lol. This isn’t a critique or negativity or anything, just an amused observation. I personally would not have used Rena’s giant blob hand to create an ad with, and the fashion in the game is all but gone from the IM, save for old, outdated outfits and whatever is on sale. *banging my fists* let us remove weapon holding and sit in fun areas to really hang out, kog.

If anyone is curious, GM Rush truly has been nothing but helpful. He looked nervous during Moshup’s response, but whether he was or not, outside of the stream I’ve been informed that he is open to taking this feedback and has comforted a lot of people in doing so. I believe he is heavily responsible for helping the GM team to remove loli off of Laby content on the blog, forums, social media, etc. I highly respect him :)!

One thing I would like to clarify is that when he says piss off, he’s actually saying it to those who use loli/trap in derogatory, insulting ways (mainly trap, I suppose.) It’s actually the best thing he says, but it is followed by his ignorance of the words’ origins and still feels a lot like he’s saying, “if someone calls you a trap, just man up, tell them to piss off” - which is an ignorant, idealistic solution in my opinion, since words like “trap” are the sort of microaggressions that tend to snowball and lead to suicide and murder of trans people, especially younger kids.

He also did end his response by saying the user could “remove themselves” if they wanted to just “throw around terms to stir the pot” .. and then said “unless you want to have this conversation, then yes, we can do that,” before ending the stream. That felt a lot like shutting the conversation down to me, unfortunately :(.

CW for transphobia, homophobia. Upon analysis, his response seems very much like he’s saying words change, and therefore, whether we use these terms or not, it doesn’t matter. He is softly defending himself, especially towards the use of trap, and called his Chung “Trap” and “Iron Princess” earlier in the same stream. I cannot trust GM Moshup with the safety of players who are young, especially young girls, and anyone who is lgbt+. “Trap” is used to dehumanize trans people, playing off the idea that they’re really X pretending to be Y.  Gay Panic Defense and Trans Panic are legal defenses for the murder of gay/trans people that isn’t even illegal in all states in the U.S, to put how serious this issue is into real life terms.  Keep in mind, KOG also does not allow same-sex marriage in game, and lesbian and gay are censored terms on the forums, while loli is not. Loli and Trap are NOT “salty” and “tilted.” The latter two mean you are angry. The first two, even in their most “innocent” forms, mean.. a cute young girl and someone who looks like a girl but is really a boy because the presence of a penis. There is no ideal world where grown men playing games can safely say how cute a little girl is, and how she can be head patted, because it is often hand in hand with lewd, pornographic content. Their discord has plenty of these people, and in game you can see many Laby’s named Loli, with people asking first day where the porn of her was. In short, it seems he took the chance to vent his anger and defend himself and the community. Also notable, the timestamps show the chat beginning to harass the user who brought the topic up. He does nothing but tell the user to, basically, piss off - unless they wanted to just have a serious talk, which he says they can do before ending the stream. I don’t think he’s a genuine pedophile, as that is a word used far too freely in cases like these, but I DO think he is ignorant on the topic and unwilling to learn more, letting his temper get the best of him as he blows up on one individual and refuses to see how this could affect people different from him.

GM response to loli/trap terms

Sorry! I forgot to put this under a cut the first time. I haven’t used tumblr in awhile, so please bear with me. A user in tonight’s livestream, January 4th 2019, told Moshup about loli and trap terms. I have transcribed his response.

(GM Moshup reads the question, regarding loli being pedophilic and trap being a slur for transgender people) Moshup: ...What?! Rush: That got serious fast. Moshup: So, here's the thing. It's only what it's going to be, when people make it that way. Especially when.. we've been in this industry for as long as we have, um, and uh.. Not even that. So, there's a lot going on right now as far as words being used in the capacity that they are right now. People want to do what they want to do, and make of it what they decide to make of it. 

Even terms now, like salty and titled, I'm sure once the inner webs are done using salty and being titled, they'll go on to something else and literally turn it into a situation where.. you either use it, or you can't.So.. Am I fan of lolis? No. It's not my thing as far as anime goes. Trap stuff? My character, Chung, has literally been.. dressed up as a female chung for FIVE years. Do I care what people say as far as the references and stuff? Absolutely not. 

If people want to use it in a derogatory manner, especially in the anime industry, when things have been that way for over twenty years.. sure they can. And they can piss right off. And people want to start using terms like that as a form of insults? Guess what? Piss right off.

But, will we avoid circumstances like that as a potential lead in or bait? Absolutely. So, that's not something we look forward to. Um.. I wish.. I wish. So, anyway, um.. is that kind of something that's a hot button right now going forward? Absolutely. Um, are we gonna avoid it? Yeah. 

So, [user who brought it up], if you want to come in here and start kicking around terms just to stir the pot, then you can go somewhere else, we'll remove you. But if you're here just to bring something up.. then yeah, absolutely, we'll talk about it.

Like… do we gotta go into the history of the term “loli”?  Is that what we gotta do now?  Do we gotta talk about how it came about from the book “Lolita” where a grown man obsessed over a child and even admitted he was guilty of statutory r*pe?  How since that book “loli” has been used to describe an underage girl as being sexually attractive?  How it is still used in this way?  How using this terminology in advertising is just looking for pedos?  Is that what we gotta explain now?

KoG had an opportunity to not use the term “loli” to describe Laby, someone who is both physically and mentally a child.  They are grown ass adults who know the meaning and history of this word.  By choosing to use this terminology, they are making the conscious decision to pander to a certain demographic while alienating other demographics and making it unsafe for another demographic.  The fact they are actively choosing to make this game unsafe for children is absolutely disgusting.

I unfortunately am not up to the combing through numerous past livestreams, but some stuff GM Moshup, specifically, has said is trap jokes, loli jokes, triggered jokes. There was a time where he said he’d be Ciel, and Pie laughed and said, “so, you like lolis?” Most notably right after this, he started talking about his daughter and the chat began to compare her to Lu. In essence, he really made a Ciel Lolicon joke with him as Ciel and Lu being... his daughter. (Quick Edit: The date I have for this is May 1st in case anyone passing by did want to check streams for legitimacy, assuming it was saved on twitch.) They are either seriously, seriously ignorant or they just plain don’t care. Even the artwork and model in game has done a fair job of treating Laby as a child and ensuring she’s not sexualized (in comparison to, say, Lu), but the NA GMs just don’t give a shit as they ignore this glaring issue.

OFFICIAL advertisements have now been spotted, calling Laby a loli. They are literally trying to get people to play Elsword by appealing to lolicons. If this issue is important to you, I’d recommend thinking carefully about supporting Elsword right now (and well their price gouging in NA is just awful anyway) It doesn’t look like they will change the GM blog title anytime soon, and they definitely will NOT communicate or say anything on this matter. Anyone concerned about this will be ignored. GMs won’t even talk to you about actual game issues these days. Edit: With my mind just slightly cooler, I will say that communication is not impossible. However, past events regarding this same topic have been mostly ignored so I’m not hopeful. Let’s see how today’s official livestream will go :thonk:

For those who take issue with any official KoG media using the word "loli", I have this suggestion to make: Go to their website, log in to your account, got to "Support", then go to "Create a Ticket". This is the method that gets the fastest response from KoG NA. Use the gategory "Feedback" and the the subcategory "Suggestions." Use a direct and concise but also descriptive and non-confrontational "Subject" line. (continued in next ask)

Make it clear that usage of that word is offensive and evocative of certain unsavory implications. Your suggestion might not be considered worth looking at or being reasonable with if you cannot sound like someone who’s capable of reason or discussion. It doesn’t matter if a topic should even be up for debate, if this issue is as sensitive as you believe it to be, then civility and thoughtfulness are all the more important in sounding both reasonable and correct. Please.

While I agree it is important to discuss these topics with calm, respect, and general professionalism, OP sounds like they’re trying to silence the topic with phrase like “if this issue is as sensitive as you believe it to be,” implying that their alignment is with those who believe loli/lolicon to be a culture/word/etc that is fine to use in a professional environment. Those who need to sound reasonable are, again, the people flaming that loli is fine, has never had sexual origins, and flame and insult people who dare to suggest otherwise. I feel like I’m being as polite as I can right now.

As an addendum to the message about using a Support Ticket: Things that count as confrontational, uncivil, unreasonable, and not-thoughtful include but are not limited to: snark, sarcasm, all-caps, implication of yelling, and generally being kind of an ass about your message. Be calm and polite. If the manner of communication would irritate you when used on you, then don't use that in the message you send. Many of you may have already messed up in that regard. Please be more careful later on.

And finally: y'all… come on, I agree that whomever runs the blog should have known better, but if this is the first time this sort of thing has happened (and I assume it is), then you must assume that it was out of ignorance. Whether if it was or wasn’t, then please remember: you know what those words mean because you’re probably deeper into weebhood than the devs are. Let them know what something means and then ensure that it doesn’t happen again. Help them and you will be helped. Please.

On the contrary, the GMs have used loli and trap terms on stream. There has been a forum thread before that we were told the GMs were aware of before it was locked, regarding the usage of loli, shota, and trap in the community. They know what the words mean because people have told them before. Furthermore, they have edited GM blogs before, and rather fast, when it was to ninja out information such as: events, freebies, etc that were said to happen, but were pulled back at the last second. The GMs simply don’t care on this matter, as long as they continue to ignore the community on this issue and refuse to even edit the blog title. GM Moshup is recorded on stream as calling Echo the “original loli” and then comparing her to his daughter. They don’t care, and while I agree that it is best to approach this issue with respect and calm, the majority of people explaining the issue HAVE been. On the forums, people against censorship of the word can be seen calling people liberals, snowflakes, triggered, and a whole other boat of fun little buzzwords, with most posts going untouched, unflagged, and generally just not given any consequences. Sending our complaints to CS just ensures that we will be ignored further without even the community learning from this, as CS is really just a handful of people who don’t play the game as intensively as players do. In the past, people have been banned for dungeon times and stats that are completely possible, because to CS, it was “hacking.”  tl;dr yes be polite but the GMs really don’t care. if you give them hell they won’t listen anyway. i tracked the discord convo on this in real time and besides GM Rush it was entirely ignored, with Rush just moving the convo into more light hearted things such as what we’d rename the blog.  This just sounds a little too much like a silencing tactic about how we should be very polite and respectful about sexualizing children when the other half are free to throw fits and call us triggered snowflakes.

Listen, it’s a really bad take to say that Elsword’s god nasty increase in difficulty isn’t a shit move on the part of the devs..

It’s like they’re putting a huge chunk of the game behind a paywall where the only alternative is for you to risk your life in the real word for a grind that might not even be enough.

FYI I have no problems spending money on this game for anything. I have that option and I have no problem taking it. But even I can sympatize with those who don’t and can’t

I have some okay el tears on my elrianode gear all of which cost me a minimum of 1B ED just to buy and to exchange,

a +11 Henir weapon, a 4/4 SR costume set with 2 of its 3 accessories and its weapon skin that I SPENT ACTUAL MONEY to get through their greedy RNG system,

everything is saged, and I also have an inventory of limited costumes/accessories/statted skill cut-ins/awakening motions and even mounts and pets that I ALSO SPENT ACTUAL MONEY TO GET.

That’s not even mentioning how much I spent for B slots and transcendence slots as well as locked skills before they made the former free.

Granted my Elrianode gear is only +7 (enhancement event when) but even so that’s just 1k above if I were using my old +9 Henir armors.

The requirement for Varnimyr is around 150k CP…

A cashout player like me just has enough CP to make it. What more those who can’t cashout and CAN’T dedicate their free time to this game?

Now the incoming dungeons are said to need around 200k CP if not higher.

Imagine what the fresh hell casual players feel like seeing that.

A game is NOT FUN anymore when you’re given the ultimatum of “spend cash or grind until you die”.

Don’t try to baby the Elsword Devs. They’re not stupid enough to think that this high wall they’re building isn’t gonna force players to quit.
