Now into her fourth year, photographer and collage artist Emily Cooper is back at Pacific Theatre for another season, with the striking imagery that has become as synonymous with the theatre company as its faith-based theatrical mission.

Once again responsible for the images to accompany the company’s season of plays, including its season opener The Rainmaker (image above), it will perhaps come as no surprise that Cooper’s inspiration always begins with the plays.

Bachelor of Interaction Design student – Tammy Le – wins at DementiaHack – an international event with a great cause.

Tammy Le participated in DementiaHack, a two day hackathon facilitated by HackerNest and the British Consulate-General Toronto and hosted by the Ryerson DMZ. It was a transatlantic hackathon with teams from Toronto and the UK participating to create solutions for dementia patients.

Jess Riva Cooper professor for Ceramics studio– Bachelor of Craft & Design has been nominated for RBC Emerging Artist People’s Choice Award. Only five artist were chosen and have the opportunity to win $10,000. The award is decided by public votes that are cast both online and at a related, just-opened exhibition at Toronto’s Gardiner Museum.

Online voting begins Wednesday, September 3 at 12 noon and ends Sunday, October 12 at 11:59 pm.  You can also vote at the exhibition from September 2 to October 12.

Advanced Special Effects Makeup, Prosthetics and Props and the Makeup for Media and Creative Arts Program booth showcased at Fan Expo was a huge success!

We hosted three seminar sessions featuring:

Emmy Award winning makeup artist Colin Penman, whose work includes The Strain, Defiance, Pacific Rim, Resident Evil, Falling Skies, the SAW movie franchise and The Kennedys.

Sculptor and Character designer Don Lanning who has designed and created some of the best known aliens and monsters on the big and small screen Star Trek: Into Darkness, Hellboy, and the current Batman featuring Ben Affleck.

Puppet-masters, Robert Mills and Fred Stinson who spoke about non-Computer Generated Special Effects. They have combined experience manipulating monsters and puppets in films such as The Thing, Short Circuit II, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II, Bride of Chucky, The Santa Clause, Labyrinth. From television credits include the Muppets on Fraggle Rock and Dinosaurs as well as their own productions of Ruffus the Dog and The Big Comfy Couch where Fred is probably best known as Major Bedhead.

Congratulations to Ann Callaghan, Daniel Baker, Aprile Aimers and our incredible students– including Chris Cooper, Alicia Hodgins, Jessica McEwen, Caressa Otello and Megan Walter for creating and staffing our Sheridan booth, and for providing on-site zombie makeup, temporary tattoos and face painting.

Angela Stukator, Associate dean for Animation and Game Design, along with Aldines Zapparoli and faculty from the animation programs were very instrumental in organizing this exhibit– Sheridan College along with Seneca being the main contributors. Sheridan animators provided the exhibit with student artwork (drawings, paintings, concept work, stop motion props, storyboards), and finished films. This exhibit took about six months to arrange and Sheridan contributors were asked to help them chart out the animation process from conception to film– film in 2D, 3D and stop motion.

This exhibit celebrates animation styles from traditional hand-drawn to computer generated pieces of work. CNE guests were able to experience and interact with the Animation workshop zone, which featured daily activities.

Sheridan is hosting again workshops over the summer for Project Pathfinder. Project Pathfinder is a summer program designed to give Aboriginal Secondary students aged 13-17 the opportunity to learn about various post secondary education pathways. Participating students can earn a dual high school and college credit.

While at Sheridan, students will experience two workshops within the Faculty of Animation, Arts, and Design coordinated by Lesley Brown-Paterson. An animation workshop taught by Mario Positano and a broadcast television workshop taught by Greg Prince. The workshops are aimed to demonstrate a higher level view of each industry and to provide hands on activities to help inspire and encourage students who are considering their future opportunities.

During the August 7th broadcast workshop Jamie Campbell host of Toronto Blue Jays telecast and previous play-by-play commentator spoke to students.

After renovations that took place last year in the interior courtyard came the next phase of this project– the organization and planting of the garden. The whole concept has been a collaborative effort by the Campus Enhancement Committee and will function as a multi-use teaching and learning space.

There was plenty of help from faculty, facilities and students with the undertaking of this project. Claire Ironside and Doug Donald created a detailed drawing of the layout and selected the materials to be planted. Susan Hutton, administrative assistant for Andre Plante was also very instrumental in getting this project off the ground. Sue volunteered to act as a dedicated project manager for the first stage of renovation last year, and then sought out donations for the flowers, trees and shrubs that were eventually planted this year, and consistently tended to—thanks to Leslie McGale and Lisa Todd.

Sue says it was all about “bringing the right people together, having the right conversations and then making it happen.” It serves as a great example of the Faculty and Facilities office working together to enrich our campus space.

The next stage will be to commission permanent outdoor furniture from our Furniture studio alumni and to continue to develop the space with trellises and art installations.

Selected by a jury of 50 award-winning creative professionals representing a wide range of expertise, the designers listed below have been recognized for their outstanding achievement in graphic design.
