“Terra…?” Eve called tentatively from the bathroom. She stared at herself in the mirror, utterly confused. “It’s not Halloween or anything yet, right?” She asked as she touched her cheek, her skin had taken on the quality of bark. A light brown that wasn’t unpleasant, but strange. Her hair hung around her face, green like leaves and peppered with flowers. The only word that came to mind was wood nymph, but it didn’t make any sense. She didn’t feel different. She still had all her powers as far as she could tell.

The woman returned the smile, settling back for a few hours rest before they made landfall. It was difficult to sleep with so many questions buzzing in her head but she focused on how she’d soon see her son to block everything else out. Eventually she opened her eyes to discover she’d fallen asleep without realising it but before she could shake the sleep from her eye, she spotted it. “Land!” She gasped, pulling herself to her feet for a better look.

Eidyia breathed a sigh of relief once she saw the island. Wearily, she guided all the boats towards it. Seeing Theodore on the shore, she raised a hand in greeting.

“I have returned.”

Theodore’s eyes lit up as he spotted her, wading out into the water and clambering aboard to wrap her in his arms. “How about we not separate for a while?” He murmured into her hair, shivering slightly with residual worry and abundant relief.

Lorelei settled back against her furs, trying not to focus too hard on the soft sound of the stars. Anytime she paid too close attention, any meaning seemed to slip through her mind even faster than before. She became so utterly still that it seemed she had stopped breathing entirely for nearly an hour, trying to understand.

“Terra…?” Eve called tentatively from the bathroom. “I do not remember what they look like but I am very accustomed to the sound of their presence. It is comforting to recognise it wherever I go.”

“They whisper to you, do they? Have you figured out what they are telling you?” Branwen asked, curious.

She considered this for a moment, trying to focus on the sound of the stars. “I cannot quite make it out. Perhaps I am not yet ready to hear them properly?”

The woman smiled softly. “She definitely seemed incredible. And you seem very proud of her.” She leaned back against the side of the boat with a small yawn. “You’re very kind to allow me such probing questions. I should leave you be.”

Lorelei took a seat at the fire’s edge, letting the warmth spread over her. “It is very nice out here. Especially now that we have some warmth.” She chuckled.

“You should come back in the summer where you barely need a fire at all. You can lay out and sleep under the stars.” Branwen smiled softly.

“Amazing, I feel like I can hear them above us.” She murmured, pulling out one of the fur blankets from the tent and settling it by the fire so she could recline on it. “It is so different from home but it feels like an extension of everything I know.”

Lorelei ducked to kiss her grandmother’s cheek and disappeared again. The one eyed woman stared in shock, hair shifting in the breeze. “That was your granddaughter?” She asked finally, turning her gaze to Eidyia. “She has a flair to her entrances.”

Eidyia placed a hand in the water, lending speed to all the boats.

Lorelei knelt at her grandmother’s side, giving her a careful his so she wouldn’t jostle Pax awake. “I am sure you have a lot to tell us.” She murmured, running her hand over the sleeping girl’s hair gently.

/“A lot may be an understatement, my dear.”/ Eidyia laughted softly. /“Lorelei, this is Pax. She will be staying with us.”/

She smiled, getting to her feet once more. “I am sure there is far more to that story but I suppose we can discuss it later. Grandpa Theo has probably paced enough to make a small trench in the sand while awaiting my return with news.”

Lorelei took a deep breath, her hands curling in the grass at her sides. “No, I am very content here. I could start to set up camp while you work.”

“Yes, that would be helpful. I am going to have my hands dirty for a while.” Branwen said, taking a knife from her boot.

She shuddered slightly and then got to work setting up a tent for them made of thick, lovely furs for the walls and the bedding. She put them up by hand, humming gently to herself as she worked to block out any sound of Branwen preparing their meal. When she was finished, she helped the tree nymph build a fire, making sure she was well out of reach of the flames before lighting it. “There we are, nice and cozy.”

The woman gave her a small smile. “We look after one another to the best of our ability. And for the first time we have a real opportunity to thrive.” She reached out, squeezing Eidyia’s hand. “I never thought I’d live in a world of possibili– Ahh!” She gasped as a flash on light revealed Lorelei. “Grandma Eida, I thought that was you I sensed approaching.” The teen said softly as she got to her feet.

Eidyia gasped, clutching her chest. /“Lorelei! You scared me. We are close, then?”/ Eidyia offered a hand to steady the girl.

/“There is no reason to be alarmed, everyone. This is my granddaughter, Lorelei.”/

“I am sorry, I could not wait any longer. You have been gone for a while, we were beginning to get worried.” She chuckled. “Well, I was beginning to get worried. Grandpa Theo was worried the whole time.”

The creature regarded her for a moment before resting his head upon her shoulder. The rest of the herd bowed and left the clearing to give them privacy. It was an honour, but a private one that they need not witness.

Branwen smiled softly and hugged the beast’s head, kissing him on the forehead. “Thank you. You will not be forgotten.”

Stroking the beast’s fur, Branwen closed her eyes and stilled his heart, guiding the soul to rest. It was gentle and quiet, the best death she could offer such a noble creature. Once the deed was done, she lifted the body over her powerful shoulders. “I won’t foul this place. Come, I have a lot of work to do and Lorelei will be getting hungry.”

The nymph nodded and sprang to her feet. “I’ll gather along the way and catch up if I fall behind.” She assured her, heading back the way they’d come. They found Lorelei curled up in her cloak, resting against the nymph’s tree and listening the the forest around her. “Ah, you have returned. That was not long at all.”
