Ada locates Sherry
cw: mentions of violence, kidnapping, blood and injury
It had been a few weeks since Sherry went missing, and the whole ordeal left everyone in a panic. The DSO, of course, were at a loss on where she went. Even with Simmons out of the picture the place was still a madhouse. It didn't take more than a few days for Leon to cave and ask Ada for help, and not long after that even Claire had gotten a hold of her and started with the begging too. And to be perfectly fair to all parties, there was not much to go off of; her house had signs of a struggle, but barely any evidence or tracks to follow. It had taken them a while to even realize she was gone in the first place until it had been her third day having missed work. It was a nightmare ripped straight out of a true crime show. It didn't feel real at all.
After some thorough scouring and grasping at straws, Sherry was eventually spotted not too far from a convenient store of all places some miles away from where she lived. If Ada hadn't been driving through on her way to where Sherry was supposed to be, she would've missed her entirely. The blonde was sitting in the dark of the evening on a curb, mostly curled up on herself, staring down at the ground with her hands fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. A shirt, was a better descriptor- the clothes she had on didn't appear to be her own, and they were absolutely ruined. There was blood covering what used to be white sweatpants and a sweatshirt, holes and scratches lined around the young woman's back and arm. Sweat and blood and struggling had left her hair a mess, the corners of it sticking to her face. It looked as if she crawled out of the pits of hell itself and was about 3 seconds away from taking a nap on the sidewalk. Frankly, that may not be that far off from what happened.
The world was a gravely disgusting place, and Ada knew it. She had seen the worst of things come to exist. She had seen some of the worst injuries delivered to men, them torn apart by their limbs. Truth was she had even walked through laboratories covered in the carnage of the research agents. Things that haunt her nightmares, but failed to get a reaction during the time she had seen them.
Seeing Sherry in this condition froze her.
When Leon had contacted her about Sherry missing, followed by Claire Redfield and even Chris himself. All begging for Ada to help, of course she had already been in search of the blonde youth from the first contact. Ada just didn’t play well with others. All them as skilled as they were would only slow the woman down, form as a distraction.
So she set out on her own, finding various leads most dead ends. It by chance; Ada had been in the area and caught a glimpse of Sherry. She didn’t hesitate. Her eyes seeing the condition the youth was in. She immediately caught her before the pavement consumed her face taking her weight against her. “What happened to you?” Ada mustered her voice cracking with emotion, something that rarely slowed.
Sherry flinched and even for a moment started fighting back before caving and leaning against the other woman, burying her face into Ada's hold as she struggled to catch her breath. She wheezed awkwardly, as if something was messing with her airways, a small sniffle coming from her as she tried to process what was happening. She was still winding down from whatever had happened, and honestly didn't think anyone was going to pop up and whisk her away- the young blonde was anticipating walking her way back home and acting like nothing happened. Having someone here, and it be Ada of all people? It was a surprise for sure.
Her clothes and hair had blood sticking to them; some dried, others still damp, namely her back and arm. It took a moment to realize but there was some piece of what looked like metal still stuck at the end of one of the gashes. It was in there pretty deep, yet the adrenaline of it all must not have let Sherry notice its existence much if she was up and moving as much as she was. Her hands found their way to the back of Ada's shirt in a tight grip as she began to tear up and whimper in the raven haired woman's grasp. It seemed words weren't going to be leaving her mouth anytime soon. So much time spent trapped, and then fighting back, and now this? It was hard for her to really take in how real it was. How real it is right now as she sobbed into the agent's arms.
She was no stranger to fear, Ada had spend years living with it. Fear always walked hand in hand with her in every day life, the fear she could see radiating from Sherry wasn’t the same. It wasn’t the fear that kept your instincts sharp and your breath held in your chest too long. The way Sherry lurched into her she felt the rigid instinctual resistance against her, before collapsing within Ada’s embrace.
Ada’s expression remained the image of a calm collected woman, however on the inside the violent urge surged right through her veins. There wasn’t room for panic, no she had to maintain the notorious control she often weaved. The realization that someone who had suffered so much in their lives had suffered at the hands of an animal. She could only imagine how Sherry felt, people like that break a person. Force them to believe that nobody was coming.
How unfortunate for the men who had laid their hands on Sherry, someone had come.
Ada’s arms adjusted giving her the support she needed, standing as the shield from the world for a moment while Sherry found space to breathe. The raven-haired woman’s amber eyes scanned over the blood that covered Sherry. For a moment she let the composure bleed, anger dangerously dripping from Ada’s fangs she knew she couldn’t dwell. Not when Sherry needed attention. First her care, then she would handle the people who had done this. It would be no hard task for Ada to figure out who they were.
“It’s alright, you are alright.. I’m here, I won’t be going anywhere.” Ada promised the youth her hands rubbing against her upper arms. She glanced around. “Can you walk? My car is just over there, we need to get you somewhere warm. Don’t worry about giving any information right now.” Her voice remained low, soothing she would take Sherry back to her own apartment. Let someone track them there, especially with the mood Ada was left in. Sherry was now safe, that was what mattered. The people who did this to her; their days were numbered.
It took Sherry a moment to really let the words seep in, and then another for her to awkwardly nod in agreement. Her grip on Ada was tight, but it didn't last as long as expected. She was already trying to stand on her own, rubbing the tears off her face and leaving behind streaks of blood that weren't entirely her own, trying to force herself back into her normal composure. But it wasn't working as fast as she'd like, leaning back into the other woman until they got to the car. Even now Sherry had a hard time relying on Ada for help- finding herself a spot in the car and fumbling to get the seatbelt out with a small huff until giving up on it entirely. Her arm stung like hell and she frankly wasn't concerned about getting any more injuries on the off chance of getting into an accident on top of the fucked up mess she had already climbed out of.
The truth was, beyond some stray contacts, Ada would not find much left behind. Some of the blood and handprints on Sherry's clothes weren't her own; she stared down at them and then the floor of the front seat with guilt and anger feuding in her mind. She did what she had to, but it left her feeling subhuman. The thought of burning the clothes down too had flown in her mind and left it pretty quickly when she wandered outside and felt the chilly night air. Lying about what happened crossed her mind as well. She could say anything and save face that she was still a sweet, unassuming woman, yet it left a bad taste in her mouth. The blonde couldn't lie to Ada, not outright. Renowned mercenary people deemed untrustworthy and yet she was the only person miss Birkin felt somewhat okay with seeing her in this state. Somewhat.
Her eyes didn’t leave the blonde’s face, there was no mistaking the tears that filled her eyes. She knew this all too well, She wondered what this would mean for Sherry in the future, if the woman’s pure smile could return.
Would Sherry become like herself?
When Sherry attempted to stand on her own Ada room initiative to lock down her grip, now walking to guide Sherry to the sleek red car. She reach one hand out opening the door making sure to keep Sherry steady. “Ease in Hun.” Ada advised knowing all to well about how the pain was, and the best way to keep her as comfortable as possible.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket, more than likely it was Leon checking to see if Ada had found any sign of Sherry. She had already decided upon seeing the condition of the blonde it would be best to not report her condition to the reckless man. Of course the raven-haired woman would reach into her jacket pocket and hit silent. After all Ada really did have a reputation for ignoring her employers.
Once Sherry settled Ada with a slow care shut the door and walked around to the car, she opened the door and gracefully slipped in. “Don’t try to be brave for me, I don’t measure a person on their ability to stand after being knocked down.” Amber eyes glanced over to Sherry, her eyes trailed to the blood stains and the bruises. “The blood doesn’t define your strength, it shows you survived the worst that someone could throw at you. It makes you stronger.” She said turning the keys, and beginning to drive.
The young woman briefly met Ada's gaze, then went to staring out the window without much thought. There was something there- a dark seriousness, her already trying to put up her walls. "It's not the worst..." Was what Sherry rasped to herself before sinking back into the silence. Awkwardly holding herself as they began their journey to Ada's place.
A small part of her took note of Ada's hasty push to silence her phone and was grateful. Just having her here felt enough, the last thing she wanted was for anyone else to pry in and start hounding her with questions or pity. The fact that people actually took enough notice that Sherry went missing already left her feeling as if she were under a spotlight. For someone so deprived of closeness the thought of having to reach out and tell anyone what went on made her nauseous. She had Ada here, and that was plenty.
Sherry felt herself nodding off and blinked a few times, adjusting uncomfortably in the passenger side. There was a slight fog building where she had been unconsciously breathing against the window in her daze, an indent of her nose left behind. She didn't feel brave enough to face her heroine. A quick glance over at the driver and then she went back to the window, putting her focus into finding out just where exactly they were heading. A mental note forming that they already passed Sherry's place, but were still within the region. Odd. Her hand felt tingly and she winced as she flexed her fingers in and out into a fist; there was nothing visible there, but she was more than aware what it meant, a pained sigh escaping her lips as she tried to settle back into her curled up position.
Her eyes remained on the road, peering over at Sherry every few minutes. She could see the pain that she tried to hide. Ada was far too familiar with concealing how you honestly felt, it was in their nature as survivors to hold a certain mask when around others. Only to suffer and break when the silence consumed you.
The ride wasn’t long her private residence wasn’t far from the location she had found Sherry at. Luckily, she pulled the car into the garage tapping the button to close the garage door. “Inside there is a guest room, private bathroom and I’m certain we can find you something clean to wear. I’ll dress your wounds, then if you wish to sleep for sixteen or forty eight hours I won’t disturb you.” Physical recovery was always the easy part. With some rest and proper bandaging the wounds fade to scars or completely.
It was the mental damages that would linger that was the hardest recovery, whatever Sherry went through Ada knew it would be awhile before she fully recovered. Another reason she refused to tell Leon where she was. The D.S.O were an awful organization and would throw her back onto the field the moment her injuries were recovered.
“You can remain here without the world invading for as long as you need, I won’t make you tell me what happened until you are ready to talk.” She slowly opened the door, walking around the car and slowly opening Sherry’s door offering her a hand, and a sturdy body to lean on.
Sherry blinked a few times as Ada pulled open the car door, pausing a moment before taking the raven haired woman's hand and awkwardly clamoring out of her seat. "Your place is only a few miles from mine..." She managed to get her observation out. Short. Simple. As if to ask Ada something, but she didn't follow up on her remark at all, deciding that was enough to get the point across. A small part of her wanted to tease the older woman about it but she was too tired to muster up anything else.
The blonde did her best not to put too much weight against miss Wong as she pressed up to her shoulder. She felt disgusting. She craved a shower even though she knew, realistically, that it'd be better to sit down in a tub for god knows how long. Her shoulder felt better, but there was still the pain singing in her arm and her back where it couldn't quite heal over as easily as the various scratches she'd endured. Sherry was mostly glad that a lot of her more alarming injuries had patched themselves before Ada even showed up, but it wasn't easy to see underneath all the blood and grime that accumulated on her clothes and skin. Not everything had been able to heal, she was running on empty at this rate.
"Ada..." The young woman spoke her name after some silence passed, desperation very thinly veiled. "I don't... want to be alone...." She confessed barely above a whisper. Mentally kicking herself for admitting that out loud even after everything she had gone through. Being alone was normal in her world, even after going through hell; but the idea of being left to her own devices in a bland, cold room after having to fight tooth and nail to escape from a different cold bland room made bile rise in her throat again. "Please..." Sherry begged softly, hiding her face into her rescuer's shoulder to hide the tears that formed.
She felt the tremor beneath Sherry’s frame, adjusting to take the weight from her. She could feel the tension from Sherry trying her hardest to stay upright, Ada guided her inside the house, the decorations were unremarkable. Nothing that would be expected of someone like Ada Wong. “Consider yourself lucky, I’ve spent a lifetime not letting anyone know where my private home is.” Ada had never considered herself inside the world with those like Sherry or Leon. The things she has done, even now when she rescued Sherry and shielded her from the overwhelming care that was inevitable.
As she felt the younger woman’s pressure against her shoulder, the broken voice of someone who had been through hell. Maintaining composure was far more difficult than usual, especially when she could relate to the pain the other felt. She closed her eyes as the final plea hit her. Something she couldn’t resist.
She was silent as they moved through the small household, her hand resting against Sherry’s back. “You aren’t alone tonight, I’ll stay right next to you for as long as you need. I’m a phantom to the world.. they won’t miss me.” She said in a soft tone as they reach the guest room. “I’ll help you clean up, and get into something warm and soft.. make sure there aren’t any fatal wounds.. You’re safe with me Sherry.”
The young blonde winced at the change in position, but after sulking in Ada's shoulder she relented and tried to stand up straight again. She wanted nothing more than to stay hidden away in her rescuer's arms for as long as she could, yet there was a nagging feeling, an invisible hand forcing her to do her best to keep it together even now. "Okay..." Was all she could muster up as a reply, a sniffle following as she blinked away the tears that threatened to form again. Sherry really didn't believe it was possible after sobbing so many times today.
Sherry found herself growing more tired by the minute as Ada lead her into the guest room. She glanced down at the floor, a shaky sigh leaving her. Safe. The word barely meant anything to her, yet in the moment, it felt more like a promise, one that maybe this time wouldn't be broken. In a world of liars, cheats, and cons, the one person that Sherry had found herself placing her trust in was Miss Ada Wong, someone many wouldn't trust for a second; Maybe it was their similarities? Or maybe it was the way that Ada didn't try to lie, or treat her the same way a person may treat a child or even a dog. Something Birkin had grown to face the older she got.
"Your shower is going to turn into a war zone." Sherry weakly joked. But there was an underlying seriousness in her tone, in the way she held the pale woman's arm tighter for a brief second. Her back stung with the feeling that something was still in there, which she knew was going to hurt like hell once dealt with. Everything would, but it was better than standing around in her bloodied clothes and dirty hair waiting another few hours for it to fix itself.
She didn’t smile at the joke, she knew that pain often was masked using humor. She herself often used that tactic, even if she was mostly alone. Humor was merely fear dressed in something beautiful and Sherry had accumulated enough fear and anguish for a lifetime.
“War Zone?” She looked over to the bathroom before Amber gems returned to Sherry. “My shower has seen worse crimes.” She assured the other woman, finally a faint curve met her soft lips. “Have you met me?” She teased hoping to pull some form of comfort from the familiarity between them.
Her hand remained against Sherry giving her that anchor to brace herself with. She could feel the exhaustion in Sherry’s form, the tremors wasn’t lost on Ada, she knew the bitter truth that trauma left behind. She looked over to the bathroom. “How about a bath instead? Hot water will help the soreness.. and I can wash your hair for you. As little work as possible.” She offered her voice gentle, with a kindness that she didn’t offer to everyone.
Sherry felt her face turn flush in a quick swirl of emotions. Even at the kind gesture she couldn't help but feel embarrassed at the idea of someone taking care of her any more than the bare necessities, and all the more awkward at showing off even an ounce of skin. Insecurity was a shocking yet real friend of the young woman. "If you do that, I might fall asleep." She answered honestly. "Or get dirt stuck under your nails. If it hasn't happened already."
I know you, but you hardly know me, not really.. Sherry thought to herself at the comment, but decided to say nothing. A grimace forming again. If Ada really was going to be doting on the blonde this much than she'd definitely find out sooner or later that something wasn't right. Anxiety gnawing at her mind as they found themselves in the bathroom, Sherry sitting down on the edge of it with a small grunt of pain. She didn't want to lie, but, on the off chance Ada wouldn't question just how the hell she got out of there so banged up, she wouldn't be jumping to tell her the truth either.
She shook the worry out of her head for now. "These are the only clothes I have... I think they threw out what I was wearing before. It was a nice bra too.." She huffed mostly to herself in annoyance. After a moment she felt around in her pocket and fished out her work phone, which was smashed to pieces; Sherry blanked at if she or they did it, and sighed, shaky hands letting it drop to the floor. "One down... ah, at least it's not mine.."

Jake grinned. He'd missed Sherry. "Of course! But please tell me Leon isn't going to give me a talk again..."
"Well, we did make plans for a group dinner at some point, but this can be between us for now." She smiled back at him, already leaning up to kiss him on the cheek.
"Oh! Awesome." He said stupidly, smiling at the kiss.
"I missed you, you know." Sherry frowned, wrapping her arms around one of his.

applies a bandage with slow and deliberate care. -> from sherry
Ada had been patched up countless times before, but never quite like this. Sherry’s hands are careful— almost impossibly so— her movements far too patient for someone dealing with the aftermath of another mission gone sideways.
Ada’s used to hurried hands, quick fixes, and people who patched her up only because they need her standing again. She simply watches, caught off guard by the unfamiliar warmth of being cared for without an ulterior motive.
“You’re very kind, Sherry,” she remarks, voice soft and gentle. “I see why Leon is so fond of you.”
"It's nothing, really." Sherry replied cooly, yet she found herself brushing some strands of hair from her own face at the compliment with a shy smile.
The blonde made a few simple adjustments before tossing the rest of the bloodied bandages and various wrappers into a nearby trash can, not yet fully leaving the other woman's side. She would have helped her regardless of any personal connections, but it felt easier to patch Ada up than any of her fellow teammates, even with her lack of skill in medical care.
"It was my fault for letting it get that bad in the first place. I should've hounded you the second it happened."
Ada flexes her arm experimentally before glancing over at Sherry with an amused smile. "You know, if you keep fussing over me like this, I might start getting injured on purpose."
She lets the joke hang for a second before shaking her head. Her gaze softens as it settles on the fresh bandage.
"It wasn't your responsibility," she says softly. "I've made a career out of pretending injuries are inconveniences." A faint laugh escapes her. "You don't need to blame yourself for my habits."
Sherry blinked in surprise at Ada's playful remark, red slowly creeping across her face before she looked away to try and focus on something else. "Well, as long as you're in my care, you are my responsibility. It's the least I can do."
The once abandoned medkit was now being packed away haphazardly by Sherry as a distraction. She had "miraculously" gotten away scot free from any cuts or scrapes herself, so there was no need to keep it out now. Feeling the itch to wash her hands despite the chances of any cross contamination being next to nothing, she used that as another quick excuse to run off and ponder what to say to her compatriot, leaving Ada alone on the bed briefly. She wasn't quite used to bantering with anyone outside of work.
"I might not be to blame, but I can still worry, you know." The young woman spoke up again as she returned to the room, hands damp and now smelling faintly of rubbing alcohol and soap. Brushing some hair out of her own face again as she sat, her bangs not wanting to stay in place. "I'm afraid you've been around enough for me to care about you. Sorry." She awkwardly laughed as she teased Ada– ironic, considering her own gripes with letting people in.
