just watched mid90s, which is a cool movie, but i was looking online at peoples' reactions to it and i think a lot of people missed the point
like, this is a thirteen year old, basically a kid, doing all this crazy shit ykwim? like to me it feels like this kid going into a world filled with people that he finds cool that aren't great role models, and finding both good and bad in it. like, he's way out of his league and he's too young to know where to set boundaries or anything so he just goes deeper and deeper - like this is for real a THIRTEEN YEAR OLD having sex and doing party drugs. and then people online go "damn i wish i was alive then" "fuckshit is so cool" "why can't things be like that now" bro fuckshit is losing himself to parties and drugs, every one of those kids is struggling in some way.
i think people have a problem of just seeing a movie for its "aesthetic". mid90s has really nostalgic cinematography and it feels really cool and fun when you just watch certain clips (i'm placing a little blame on tiktok editors here, they really curate that positive spin) but it isn't a happy movie! (not that it's sad, its just kind of neutral, realistic, a snapshot of life & culture)
This will be my most radical statement but some of you need to really REALLY wake on up.
The whole "living in the U.S. is embarrassing" "I hate it here" and centering yourself in situations that you are NOT the victim in only feeds imperialism. You're only making matters worse.
If you REALLY and I mean ACTUALLY want to see change you have to get off your ass and stop being a victim and whining all day. If you wanna protest, block traffic. Standing on the side of the road all calm. Block traffic and stop people from getting to work. Seize the means of production by force and let nobody work.
Americans let fear hold them back so much yet are one of the only gun ridden countries that WON'T fight back. Other countries are being bombed and having their lives ruined and losing their families and still rise up and fight back.
That should be what you're actually embarrassed about. Not fighting back.

one of my BIGGEST pet peeves is people who are "alternative" or something like that - but they just buy all their clothes online or off amazon or whatever. like, alternative styles should be collected, thrifted, gathered, diy-ed. the whole point is personalizing style and also like opposing capitalism? like, alt styles are supposed to SYMBOLIZE SOMETHING, like going against the norm and capitalism.
like people will buy the clothes and listen to the music but not live the lifestyle! you can wear the right clothes and listen to the right bands but you have to actually care about politics and opposing the norm. a lot of these movements started as political. bbg it isn't alt to buy from amazon. i'm not saying im perfect or anyone is but anything from a thrift store is more grunge than your amazon flannel. idk. lets stop being so consumerist.
I'm going to start compiling a list of horrible shit the Duffers have said and done as evidence for why even if conformitygate is real and they release a secret 9th episode that's actually just a 3 hour byler movie, I'm still not forgiving them. Because now that the queers have been successfully baited, there's no need to stop themselves from showing their true colors.
This is going to be my pinned post and I'll keep adding to it whenever I see shit that grinds my gears. Duffers you will not get away with this.
