For whatever reason, Karen’s comment about sleeping all day irritated her. That’s not all the patients did but honestly if they wanted to, why not let them? There was nothing entertaining to do here anyways. “No, not actually but sure..” Alice looked down at her hands when she said the word ‘girlfriend.’ Not anymore. “Oh, well… Sorry then..” She shrugged, not understanding why she had such a bad mood about, of all things, Harry Potter. “I don’t know, I guess that just makes you a poor muggle then…”

Karen glanced over from where she was standing letting out a small, softer sigh. She couldn’t help but notice how short and uncertain Alice’s answers had become. It made her feel kind of bad. She was constantly in a grumpy mood sure but she didn’t always want to drag people along with her. Karen stayed silent before she turned back toward the television, wanting to go easy on her. “So what’s it all about really?”

“Okay, yeah but the sleepiness isn’t exactly a bad thing… It’s relaxing and cozy.” She hadn’t intended on being snappy again but when she brought up Pepper, Alice felt the anger rise inside her. “Look, she was in a really bad place, okay? Obviously. And no, she should’ve never been able to escape but that was an issue with security, not our belongings.” She hadn’t meant to embarrass Karen–honestly, she had been trying to be playful. “Oh please. Harry Potter is everyone’s style. The real question is which Hogwarts house you’re in.”

“I guess so. You’re all gonna try to sleep all day aren’t you?” It wasn’t really a bad thing she guessed, at least she would have the opportunity to rest her ass off if they did but still the gloominess would make the thirty minutes drive not worth it. “I wasn’t talking about your girlfriend. I knew that was the fault of our fellow staff I was talking about the ones before that.” Karen corrected not sure if she should be amused or sad by how quick Alice had defended the other girl. She rolled her eyes again. “My house? I live in a shitty apartment what does that make me?”

“You pe–oh okay,” that was a little baffling, but she was too disinterested to ask or argue, or speak much in general, and knew she had to be stuck here no matter how much she wanted to slip away. She was pretty sure the basement was locked thoroughout the visit week, and there was nowhere else she could crash and claim as a hiding sanctuary. The question made her flinch, regret this even fucking further. “That’s me,” she mumbled. “It’s okay. Took a long time to get the greenlight, but I should be off next Wednesday.”

Karen was a bit quiet for a few seconds the girl’s answer made her think. She wasn’t one to comfort people but she could tell this was stressing her out. Sometimes stress came in form of detachment instead of full blown red eyes. “You know I know what’s it like. Moving away from the people you care about.” she said chewing her lower lip lightly. “It fucking sucks but you’re doing this for the better. Whatever’s on the other side you’re at least taking a step forward and not letting yourself get stuck here. That should.. you should at least have a little bit of pride for being brave enough to do that, kid.”

“Oh, stop. It’s the prettiest season…” She sighed and shrugged. “Yeah, you’re not wrong… But it’s still irritating. Look, I know I’m not your favorite but can you just put yourself in that position for a second? Let’s say that for the most part, you do what you’re told. And yes, you can be a bit of a snarky patient but you don’t sneak any kind of contraband in and you just want to have what very few personal belongings you do have left alone, right?… And then week after week, even though they never find anything, you have your shit searched through like you’re some kind of criminal. I’m sorry if it seems like I’m being a whiner but yeah, it’s a little fucking irritating. Just because I’m used to it doesn’t make it any less humiliating.” Her jaw dropped, a little less disagreeable and a lot more shocked. “What? You’ve never seen it? Like, ever? I take it you haven’t read the books, either? Oh my god, that’s why your so serious! You’ve never had the joy of Harry Potter in your life. You need to fix that, like, right away.”

“It’s the sleepiest season. At least winter has snow and the cold can make the booze taste a lot better.” She sighed when Alice started to ramble but for once she was trying to listen to her though. She took pity on the people who’d been around for a long time she knew it could be quite discouraging to see the same thing over and over again. “What you’re saying is that you’re sick of people not trusting you? I’d be more empathetic to that statement if it weren’t for the fact the last time we loosened supervision on a patient they went and tried to kill themself. Nothing wrong with being too careful.” Karen was almost embarrased by what Alice said next and she turned away to pretend it hadn’t effected her whatsoever. “Magic, wands, stupid kid with stupid glasses. It’s not my style. At all.”

“Well, you clearly aren’t fortunate enough to appreciate fall for whatever reason.” Alice had never really seemed to get along with Karen. Secretly, she actually kind of wanted to get to know her but she always seemed so serious and Alice didn’t do well with serious. “Yeah, they cleaned it this morning. After raiding through all my things in search of contraband but you know, it’s totally fine.”

“It’s the laziest season of all time.” Karen usually didn’t mind lazy but she was talking about the season where things would also get mess around her apartment. Leaves all over the place her landlord telling her to keep tidying up when all she wanted to do was sleep and drink. “It should be totally fine. You’ve been here for a long time Alice, surely you’ve gotten used to it.” She said with a shrug at least Alice wasn’t sounding as bratty as she had been few seconds ago. “I’ve never watched Harry Potter.”

“Can you please just shut the fuck up so I can actually hear Harry Potter? I’m trying to get into the fall spirit and I can’t do that if you don't stop talking.”

“We got a badass over here.” Karen said with a sigh having been tired of patients being rude to the staff. “Nothing much is gonna happen in fall. I was just asking if you had your room cleaned yet.”

“Oh…you’re right it is. I didn’t really realize how late it was getting. Sorry…I don’t even know how I got out here.”

“Yeah? Are you okay?” Did he disassociate? “If you’re not feeling well I could ask one of the nurses to come here and check you.”

“I’m sorry did I say something to you just now? I um…I don’t remember if we were talking or not. I kinda slipped away for a minute.”

“I was just asking why you were out here. It’s getting pretty late. You should get back to your room.”

“Ah. I don’t think that’s the problem.” The problem was that she was still angry with her for what she’d done. “Alright. Hopefully, she’ll show up. Sure, I can wait.”

“Really? What is it then. No need to tell me. I’m no therapist.” She said moving over to gather files and cocking her to gesture the woman toward one of the table. “You want anything to drink?”

“Well, almost the same reason then.” She figured this lady was an orderly, right, given her uniform and everything and it was something she’d grown familiar to seeing. It was kind of amusing how even the staff members couldn’t even handle some of those parents, suppose the whole reunion thing didn’t always end up so peacefully. Heather wouldn’t know, she tended to avoid them, knowing her father only visited for Sam. “Go enjoy the sun, it’s bright, it’s shiny,” she wondered if China would be this warm, or even worse. “You wanna sit down or something? Is that allowed?”

It was probably not allowed but fuck that shit really. She was on a break and the patient wasn’t annoying her for once so she would relish that in as much as possible. She’d gotten away with much terrible stuff anyway including the flask hidden within her jacket in her locker. “I permit myself.” She said simply, walking over next to the girl. Karen leaned back and breathed in deeply. “So you’re the girl who’s going to move right? How’s that coming along?”

You and I could be grumpy asses together for the rest of the day.” At least she wasn’t someone who was going to send her daggers or give her the talk that could make her like, squirt liquid out of her eyes, she wasn’t sure if she was prepped up for that. She didn’t get vulnerable to many people. Heather shrugged at the question. “Too loud. Too many people. I saw kids, can’t handle kids.” A lie. “Why aren’t you inside?”

“Sounds fine to me.” She never thought she’d ever see the day where she would willingly hang out with a patient well almost a semi patient now considering this kid’s move she had been hearing about. But maybe she was beginning to get softer from all the time she had spent here. “Too many people. Jerk ass parents who were all mighty and impatient” Karen said following her shrug. “Plus I’m on my twenty minutes break so might as well just bask the sun instead.”

“You should probably go inside.” She’d been sitting on a bench near the entrance for almost two hours now–not truly knowing why, she thought, maybe just to remind herself where it all started here, the crisp grass, the cladness of her sweater when it became too warm–that fucking tree she’d always wanted to climb on. There were only nine days left, and Heather wasn’t sure if she wanted to memorize or forsake everything altogether. “I’m not exactly the funnest person to spend time with right now.”

“Trust me. I’m far from fun myself. Negative plus negative might somehow equal positive in this case?” Truth be told Karen just wanted to slip away from the rest of these people. Visitor week had been exhausting for her all she wanted to do all day was find some place where she could find peace. This girl didn’t seem like she would annoy her. Fingers crossed. “Why aren’t you inside?”

“That was kind of cryptic, considering I have no idea what’s been going on here recently. She doesn’t really keep me in the loop. Pepper Chase.”

“Just the general distaste of being seen by relatives or whatever in such a disorderly state. If I were them I’d avoid my family too. She should be around soon. Therapy hours are almost done anyways. Would you like to wait here?”

“Caroline Ellis. She’s in her late forties.” She still didn’t have a speech prepared in her head. What was she supposed to say to the woman after that? Her sister was gone and her mother tried to do the same, what did that say about her? “I’m just nervous. This is complicated.”

“Okay. Ms. Ellis.” Karen said nodding her head to follow her words as she opened a stack of papers. Her file wasn’t really in there but she just wanted to look professional more than anything plus Ellis was kind of a stand out given her age. “Complicated how? You haven’t seen her in a while?”

Isolde went through her papers that she’d brought along for the visit request “The last thing I heard she wasn’t happy about something to do with her room…Whilst I don’t want her to have to be here I really can’t spend the day looking after her, I don’t want to treat her like a puppy that has to be watched…But well…She has to be” The blonde sighed, offering the papers to Karen “I can wait here” she agreed.

“She was very dissastified with pretty much everything in her room. The arrangement mostly.” Karen shrugged although she had already grown used to complaints these days so she wasn’t taking it personally. Camilla would situate herself pretty soon. “I think she just needs some time taking it all in.” Karen said with a nod. “Okay. Do you need anything? Water maybe?”

“I’m looking for my older sister, I’m her sister and lawyer all in one. I heard that she wanted to see me desperately?” Isolde wondered, tilting her head at the other “She’s a brunette, in her 40′s….Wears many sweaters, hates the wear the same one for a full day”

“Camilla Spencer?” Of course she recognized the women’s last name this apparent sister of hers had been one of the people Karen had welcomed lately and boy wasn’t she a fuss to deal with. It wasn’t something she would say outloud though. Not yet. “I haven’t seen her yet. You wanna wait here?”
