Chris presenting to our cohort for our second feedback session!
Setting the twist on the cotton spun last week. Cotton can be set with a simple warm bath (add baking soda if you like, but careful if you’ve already dyed it!) Following this, the new yarn is hung to dry. Once its completely dry, it’s good to spool it to smooth out some of the twists before you use it.
This week I’ll also be experimenting with unspun cotton as a material. The images above give you a sense of its texture - very soft, thready, and easy to break— but also quite beautiful and light. I am hoping to use a combination of finished yarn and unspun cotton together in a few works later this week.

Monday! Most of my work for this residency is looking at source material gathered and made during my 2014 teaching artist residency in Bangalore, India at the Srishti School. I’ll be working on spinning this beautiful ream of cotton that I purchased on a site visit to a state-certified Khadi production facility with my students. I’m also digging through a series of letters sent and received between me and a few New Yorkers during my 2014 residency. I’ve been reading and rereading them to pull out some phrases (see above) for another part of this project!
