So I have chickens who are turning a year old next month. And ONE of my girls, Mutton, had to be permanently isolated because she is a cannibal and was assaulting her sisters. So since she is a social creature but too in touch with her dinosaur DNA I have been training her all winter to leave her pen and follow me closely so that in summer she can have time out and about with something like a flock, but still be safe and under observation.
She got used to snow the past few weeks. And the snow she got used to has a CRUST, a crust that is capable of supporting a chicken's weight. Requires negotiating carefully because slippery, but is inoffensive enough.
The snow all melted and then today we got more. Absolute bullshit. But who can complain. When snow stops showing up entirely I will know global warming has doomed us all. The snow we got TODAY was soft and fluffy and WET. If you've grown up around snow you know the kind I mean.
Mutton came outside for her regular leg stretch and Mommy Time. And, being confident that the snow would NATURALLY hold her up, jumped directly into a snowbank.
When I tell you this girl SHRIEKED. She sank up to her neck in soft, wet, slushy, COLD, snow. I had no camera on hand, so artistic representation is below.
She spent one half-instant raging at the betrayal of the laws of nature, and EXPLODED out of the snow flapping and shrieking. I legitimately thought she was hurt. She flew a solid four feet across the surface of the snow flapping and clucking and cursing and desperately trying to keep out of it....
And landed in a second snowbank.
Cruel hobbit that I am I laughed the entire time, but I DID immediately scoop her up and hold her close to me. I was wearing a hoodie so the fabric wicked away moisture and helped me warm her up. And while she is a terror akin to velociraptors to her own kind she is gentle and cuddleable and very docile with humans. So she sat in my arms getting warmed up and Bokking back and forth with me about how unfair it was and how awful I was for laughing at her.
