Argentina imported 50 beavers from Canada in 1946 for creating a fur industry. While the industry failed to viably materialise, the spread of beavers posed a challenge. In the absence of a natural predator, the beaver population is destroying the long-protected indigenous trees at the park and surrounding areas. Whaler’s Bay Bordered by a black sand beach, this region was a centre for fur sealing industry for a short time(1819-1825) and then for the whaling industry(1904-1931). Whales were stripped from their blubber to produce oil, reaping high profits initially. Once “factory ships” were built in 1925, whaling could take place entirely at sea. Commercial whaling eventually stopped due to lack of whales since there weren’t many left to kill anymore.
