If you say "art" people just think paintings in museums, if you say "media" it's too vague and clinical, if you say "content" you sound like a YouTube terms and conditions corpo-ghoul, if you say "crafts", plural, it sounds like you mean macaroni art and hand turkeys, if you say "craft", singular, you sound like you sell pussy candles and migratory bird feathers on Etsy, if you say "creative expression" you sound like a lotion-handed Human Resources weasel straight out of a Mike Judge cartoon. How have we managed to completely drain the linguistic well when it comes to discussing individual and collective cultural creativity, aka Capital A Art. It's dire!
At the heart of most jokes about polyamory is the fact that the critic is appalled that people they find unfuckable get sex and physical affection from multiple other people instead of sequestering themselves in a bell tower
last week would have been the 58th birthday of bernard baran, who was imprisoned in 1984 at the age of 19 after a pair of parents failed to get him expelled from his position as a teacher's aide via a complaint about his uncloseted homosexuality and resorted to fabricating claims of pedophilia and sexual abuse. refusing a plea bargain for 5 years that demanded admission of guilt by maintaining his innocence, he received multiple life sentences and ultimately spent 21 years in prison. a scrawny boy of less than 100 pounds whose photo was published in the newspapers, he was beaten and sexually tormented, received threatening letters and a bounty was placed on his head. his conviction came in record time despite a total lack of evidence, countless contradictory and objectively impossible stories, and preschooler child witnesses outright asking for the "prize" they were "promised" after giving their testimony. his immediate appeal was denied, and afterwards his family was too poor to continue paying a lawyer. not a single lgbt organisation chose the side of a gay teenager being subjected to a kangaroo court in the middle of the satanic panic. ultimately, his release took until 2006, a few days after his 41st birthday, when a local advocacy group successfully proved the absurdity of his trial and the deliberate manipulation of evidence. he only got to live another 8 years in freedom, bearing mental and physical damage from years of abuse and negligent medical care. he needed a full set of new teeth to replace the ones that were punched out or broken and extracted. nevertheless, he enjoyed gardening and found work as a landscaper. his record has not been cleared to this day.
anne carson: simple moving poem about awkward dinners with not-quite-friends and the ennui that comes with realizing this mundane unhappiness is all adult life is sometimes
insane people on twitter: has she ever tried being happy? i like going to dinner with friends, what’s wrong with her? she can afford to go out to dinner, she shouldn’t complain. just be a cooler hang, skill issue. this isn’t my exact experience (i like my friends) therefore this poem is bad and unrelatable and pretentious. she can’t debone a fish? loser.
going through the quote tweets with my jaw hanging
The poem's about feeling disconnected and rejected, and the audience stumble over themselves to avoid connecting with it and to reject it. I kind of like how closely the sad fictional world of the poem and the callous reality dovetail together 💔
#i would never be sad i would never be sad i would never be sad <- internal monologue of the commentary
for the advancement of real communism, society needs to (checks notes) uh. remain exactly identical to the way it already is and make absolutely no attempt at perhaps trying to function differently.
I feel as though goth is the only subculture that has been bastardized by the mainstream into being nearly unrecognizable from its origins. Like yes from within the subculture and among those who are more knowledgeable about all kinds of music after the 1950s we know what goth music entails and the aesthetic and fashion that formed around it, but among "normies" it feels as though they only recognise the watered-down, soulless and fetishized version of "goth" that exists only to sell shitty, edgy fast fashion and pop music that just so happens to be in minor key. Like imagine if someone declared Avril Lavigne to be the ultimate, most important hardcore punk musician, at best they'd get laughed at by anyone with any knowledge of punk, and yet when someone declares that Fallout boy or Lil Peep are goth musicians it's the person who tried to correct them who often winds up at best being ridiculed or ignored. It's like people want to partake in this subculture without making the minimum effort to actually know what it's all about. To them goth is just a costume that they can buy off dollskill and then discard and then after a while describe that as their goth phase in a bashful manner.
I really feel that this quartering of goth has a lot to do with the use of the term in order to sell an aesthetic to people who want to appear different from the mainstream without delving too deeply into what makes a subculture as such, which of course would imply rejecting the current societal standards based around appearance and behaviour. All modern music-based subcultures are to a certain degree anti-capitalist and anti-consumerist, including goth; the goth aesthetics often reject gender binaries as well as current fads, whereas the music (derived from punk) has (save the mainstream success of several bands in the 80s) rarely been fit for the mainstream for its overall sound and lyrics, which often means that goth musicians release their music independently.
Not to mention that this uptick in "goth" aesthetics among the general public has also come accompanied by an even greater fetishism of goths, especially women, by outsiders. The more I hear "I want a big tiddy goth gf who will let me abuse her under the guise of BDSM 🥺" the more stories I hear from goth/alt women and gnc people being harassed by people with no respect or boundaries, both in real life and on-line. This selling of goth aesthetic without any ties to the subculture also means that this image is being shown to the public in association with behaviours and beliefs that don't inherently have anything to do with goth, but that are associated with promiscous behaviour packaged to the male gaze.
i saw the trailer for the new feel-good “anti-racist” US war movie about the carpet bombing of North Korea and started writing up something for this blog, partially inspired by the absolute shit storm i got for sharing that post i made with pictures of everyday life outside pyongyang
and then i gave up, because what’s the point? westerners can’t even handle a single picture of a north korean not looking miserable without screaming propaganda
meanwhile, there are no stories about the horrors of life in the ‘hermit kingdom’ that are deemed too outlandish to be believable. i can’t remember who said it, but it’s like the entire country has taken up permanent residence in the western imaginary as some silly little cartoon villain, where the leaders of the country does evil things for no discernible reason. they’re just silly and evil like that, and the citizens, of course, are silly, too. silly and brainwashed.
i watched a video recently of a tourists visiting an auto dealership in pyongyang, and the entire time he was just gawking at the employees and costumers, shoving his phone in their face, and confidently explaining to his youtube audience that everyone he’s interacting with are actually actors.
what level of dehumanization do you have to reach for that thought to even cross your mind? to think that the people you see before you are actors? that entire cities and shops are erected with to sole purpose that you, a western, will see them and be impressed?
what frustrates me the most is the casual cruelty that seeps into any mention of north korea, no matter how small. if north koreans are not being evil, they’re being silly.
a north korean newspaper reports that a group of archeologists in pyongyang have discovered an old rock carving with the words ‘unicorn lair’ (mistranslated), and the western press reports that north koreans now believe in unicorns.
a tourist at a hotel in hamhung is told by the receptionist to be careful at the beach: the waves can get high. that day the tourists goes to the beach, and there are no waves. she retells the story to her instagram followers, explaining that the poor woman at the hotel could never have seen real waves before because north koreans are probably never allowed to travel.
she adds a little teary-eyed emoji.
one of the cities i included in the post was sariwon, a densely populated city to the south of pyongyang. below are some pictures from its “folk customs street”, which was built to showcase old korean traditions and customs
here’s all wikipedia has to say about it
Built to display an ideal picture of ancient Korea, it includes buildings in the “historical style” and a collection of ancient Korean cannons. Although it is considered an inaccurate romanticized recreation of an ancient Korean street, it is frequently used as a destination for foreigners on official government tours. Many older style Korean buildings exist in the city.
it’s just north koreans being silly again. there’s no mention of what might motivate them to build a street like that — why the preservation of old customs, culture and architecture might somehow be important for the city
could it perhaps have something to do with how the U.S. air force dropped 635,000 tons of bombs, including 32,557 tons of napalm, over the korean peninsula during the war? the carpet bombings, which are now the topic of an upcoming hollywood movie about overcoming racism through warcrimes, destroyed an estimate of 85% of all buildings in north korea. some cities were entirely wiped off the map.
in sariwon they missed a few buildings, but not many — after an intense firebombing campaign the U.S. military estimated the destruction of sariwon to be at 95%.
none of this is mentioned on the wikipedia page for sariwon.
we destroyed entire cities. memory-holed the entire thing, called it the forgotten war. and now, 70 years later, we’re convincing ourselves that the people living in the ruins are actors.
and somehow the north koreans are the brainwashed ones
that’s just the infrastructure… 20% of the POPULATION in the dprk was wiped out by the usa. 1 in 5 people. and who knows how many more died from starvation and diseases and injuries from the destruction of their land and the stacks upon stacks of sanctions the west has thrown at them since
