Somewhat of a Gearstick

My name’s Ambulon, ward manager for the Lost Light. I work alongside chief medical officer Ratchet and CMO-in-training First-Aid to make sure this accident-prone crew can make it back to Cybertron in one piece. [[A New Crystal City RP Account]]

“Ratchet, it’s good to see that you’re back. We were starting to get a little short staffed around the medbay- Especially with these wreckers picking fights down in the bar.”

"I can imagine. First Aid has informed me of everything that’s been happening. It seems to be a good time for me to have come to."

“Well, if you were asking my opinion- ‘a good time to come to’ would have been a few vorns ago.” He replied gruffly, “But I can’t really hold you accountable for your disappearance, not with these tears and whatnot abducting bots left and right…”

Pipes waits patiently, displaying not an ounce of anticipation. After all, he expects this to be very cut-and-dried; he knows he’s not a minibot. It’s the sort of thing that someone had sorted out right away, there’s no chance that he could have lived his whole life without knowing—

—ah, and now Ambulon’s speaking again and… wait. 

Wait. 

"Whoah, I—heh, I’m sorry, did you just…" Pipes begins, but he cuts himself off. He knows what he heard, and what follows next is a verbal progression into denial. “You—what do you mean, I’m… I’m not a minibot! I can’t be, I—a millimeter?"

He shakes his head, more than a little floored by this information. “There’s no way…" he finishes rather weakly.

“Well, that’s what the records say...” Ambulon shrugs, his voice taking on the tone of mild amusement, with a hint of sympathy, at the, newly classified, minibot’s disbelief.

“It’s not that bad, Pipes. You’re still the same person you are when you began this comm- the only thing that has changed is a bit of text on your medical file.”

 excursionistonwheels said: "It’s not, really," Pipes replies with a shrug. “I mean, I -know- I’m not—I’m way too big! It’s just to prove a point, you know, to get someone off my case." Pipes tilts his head and waits for Ambulon’s response.

“Fine, fine.” Ambulon muttered, pulling up the specs and comparing it to Pipe’s stats.

“Well, everything seems to check out, looks like you’re not a min- wait a minute. Something doesn’t look right on your specs…”

There was a small paused, followed by the sound of shuffling datapad, “Yeah, I was right. I just pulled up the record of your last physical and you’re about half a millimeter shorter than what is stated on your original stats.” He goes ahead and makes the adjustments and compares the specifications, “So that makes you…”

Ambulon suddenly lets out a laugh unbecoming of an autobot medic, “Aha, seems like you just barely qualify as a minibot. I’ll go ahead and make the necessary changes to your profile.”

"Hey, Ambulon, if you've got a moment, I need to ask a favor. Do you have the medical specifications for minibot classification? I've got my specs here." He pings the ward managed with a data packet. "Could you just help me clear up this nonsense once and for all, and tell everyone I'm NOT a minibot?"

Ambulon had been in the middle of filing patient records when he received Pipe’s message. At first the Ward Manager tenses up, his initial reaction was to expect the worst- this had become his kneejerk response with anything concerning Pipes, but who could blame him? That little truck was a medic’s worst nightmare…

But he calmed down when Pipes made his simple request.

“Yeah, I got the specs…” He sighed, glancing to the pile of datapads that littered his desk, itching to get back to filing them, “Pipes, is it really that important? Who cares if someone thinks you’re a minibot?”

While Red Alert would never admit it or necessarily believed it, the optimism from the medic did him good, as something to counteract the extreme pessimism his processor seemed to default to. But while the ‘best minds of cybertron’ bit might be true, he couldn’t help but notice the vagueness of the hopeful statements.

"Just how far along is the cure?"

Probably not very, or he’d have been told that first thing. So his first instinct was likely right, he’d have plenty of time for the virus to take hold of him. With that grim assurance out of the way, he acknowledged the medic’s offering.

Carefully he eyed the cube, gaze flitting between it and Ambulon. Even more carefully he took the cube, taking one last look at the contents before setting it aside. Perhaps when Ambulon left he would analyze it and refuel.

The smile fell from Ambulon’s face when Red Alert inquired about the cure, his expression returning to his usually thin lipped frown. Primus, he was starting to wish Red Alert was more like Tailgate or Swerve- He was sure that those two would have been more than happy to accept his reassurance without further question

He’s a ward manager, he wasn’t made for this kind of situation, he did better categorizing and managing; he was never that great with comforting.

Well, there was no sense lying to Red Alert, “It’s a work in progress- we are still trying to understand how the virus works. “

He picks up Red Alert’s discarded cube and sets it back into his hands, “But we’ll figure this out, we’ll find a cure. Now drink, it’s not laced with anything- test it for yourself.”

“So you’re not in the mood. That’s kind of the point of me brightening your day. That’s the *brilliance* of it. Okay.” He makes a show of clearing his throat, and when he begins, his voice is a very unusual tone: one of gentle sympathy. “Ambulon…”

“Whirl…” He tone clearly indicates that he is not fooled by the other’s sudden show of sympathy; he sounds as if he is going to cut the comm, but instead he sighs, “Fine, go ahead- What did you want to tell me.”

Best let Whirl get this out of his system now, he thinks.

But Primus help him if this is another jab at his paint…

Great, time. Time in which, judging by the diagnostic questions and information given by Ambulon, he would be slowly becoming more and more disoriented as his memory banks corrupted. What a great way to go. There was little doubt in him that the virus would progress, and take him with it. He was in the middle of following that miserable train of thought when he felt a touch to his shoulder, and instinctively he jumped. He was.. not used to contact and was easily startled at the best of times, but he certainly hadn’t been prepared for this. Fighting the urge to return to staring at the medic with suspicion, he settled for staring down at his hands.

But strangely enough, he felt just the tiniest bit calmed.

Ambulon was never one for the optimist expressions, but seeing the security chief like this, he decided the other bot needed something more than his usually stoic expression.

He gave Red Alert another pat on the shoulder and offered the other a sympathetic smile, “We’ll find a way to fix this. You have some of the best minds of cybertron on this ship working for a cure. I know bots that would offer up their own leg to have Ratchet tend to them…”

He wanders off toward a nearby cart and pulls out a cube of medical grade energon,” Here, drink this. I saw that your energon levels were looking a little low…”

He offers the cube to Red Alert, while he scrawls a few more things down in his data pad.

Ambulon was carefully watched as he moved to Red’s side, and coupled with his silence it made for a tense atmosphere. He nodded quickly at the first question, his attention split between Ambulon’s physical presence and the device now plugged into him.

Carefully he monitored them both, and after a delay he acknowledged the latter question, unsure how to respond.

He hated admitting there was a problem, something that had constantly helped to make him an absolutely terrible patient.

”..Displaced. I thought I was in Iacon, yet I remember bits of things that couldn’t have happened until after. Time must have passed. But things seem to be missing and I can’t place anything together, it’s so muddled.

“We’ll fix this.” Ambulon reassured, glancing down at the monitor, scheming through the readings, “According to this data the virus hasn’t fully matured, so we still have time.”

Ambulon didn't know much about the Red Alert other than the second-hand rumors and an occasional wary stare, but he could notice the air of anxiety that surrounded the security chief.

He suddenly recalls Delphi and what Ratchet had told him about comforting a distressed patient. Ambulon side-eyed the other bot for a brief minute, before bringing his gloved hand to Red Alert’s shoulder, giving him a small pat.

It was an awkward, but sincere gesture.
