lazy day

//just a lazy day in bed watching Storm of the Century. I really miss made for TV movies - something about the "hook" before commercial break to keep you watching, the middling production value with sometimes breakout performances, and overall weird content that wasn't good enough for a feature movie or long enough for a tv show.

one of the reasons why Columbo is so funny is because he will get on his suspect's nerves sooo badly and then the suspect cannot do anything about it because Columbo will go "I'm just a little guy and it's my birthday! I'm just a little birthday boy!" with the suspect and Columbo both knowing full well that Columbo is lying but the suspect cannot say a word about it not being Columbo's birthday due to the social conventions surrounding them and the fact that they are indeed guilty of murder

moving away from second brain

//i've been trying for what feels like a decade to make the second brain method work, and it just never seems to pan out regardless of platform.

my most recent attempt was using obsidian and while i still feel that obsidian is significantly better than the other options out there, and is probably the only app that could get me anywhere close to where i want to be with a second brain, the simple fact that it does not have a web portal makes it unusable.

i don't work from home, and i cannot simply download software to my company computer, so not having access to my "brain" for 8 hours a day is a killer. looks like i'm back to apple notes and notion once again.

constantly annoyed by the pedantry of the novel translation community

//it's just extremely hard to interact in the space when almost all of the public forums for the community are moderated with pendatic and hypocritical rules. someone asks where they can get the novel in original chinese? despite moderators being fully aware that you can only do it through mirror sites due to ID lockdowns, you get a slap on the hand for suggesting *piracy* sorry to be the one to inform you losers, but the entire community is built entirely on pirated material. these projects are not author approved, and while i'm not the type to believe that piracy of this particular media is taking away from the artists (we can't access chinese servers obvs) it certainly isn't sending money to them, and given the crackdown on recent non-hetro material it could explicitly endanger them. so much of this community is built on some weird false moral high ground re piracy and it's exhausting. combined with how many translators exhaustively insert themselves into the work, acting as if they have some stake or claim over it when they just pirates like everybody else it's 0 wonder AI translation websites are blowing up.

age verification is a scam

//something i'm not seeing discussed re age verification is that it's straight up just a scam to push more ads. why is youtube rolling them out to audiences that don't even need it? who will the "ai verifying age" actually target? people who use vpns and ad blockers. people who are opting out of googles data collection activities a little too well.

even if there was someone dumb enough to believe an algorithm could accurate judge age with 100% accuracy - which is the legal requirement now - their legal team would never allow it. courts generally don't care that you did your best to comply.

//this is season is sooooo rotten to me. my biggest gripes? - christian is not giving constructive criticisms - the judges are not giving constructive criticisms -barely any time spent on the designs/designers -who is everybody? who are these people fr? and now we've got an episode where the contestants are choosing someone to go home? this show was about creatives competing not reality show survivor. we have so many shows like that already and if PR goes that way, it's a worse version so why watch. it feels like the designers are just all alone on this season without support and they don't respect one another or the judges at all.

dreamlife and girly cyberdecks

// i've been falling down the rabbit hole of cyber decks recently, and of course i want to make on but it's sooo far outside of my abilities it's ridiculous. but it got me thinking about the dreamlife console - perhaps the last series of console that i wouldn't be embarrassed to leave out when guests come over (xbox starting at guests over the charcuterie board? yuck) i wish we made more cute consoles. or even just cute cases for mini-pcs. and before anyone comes at me and suggests a steam deck - i need access to my otomes and dress up games, it's never gonna be a steam deck for me.
