The Magnetic Field of the Whirlpool Galaxy : Do magnetic fields always flow along spiral arms? Our face-on view of the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) allows a spectacularly clear view of the spiral wave pattern in a disk-shaped galaxy. When observed with a radio telescope, the magnetic field appears to trace the arms’ curvature. However, with NASA’s flying Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) observatory, the magnetic field at the outer edge of M51’s disk appears to weave across the arms instead. Magnetic fields are inferred by grains of dust aligning in one direction and acting like polaroid glasses on infrared light. In the featured image, the field orientations determined from this polarized light are algorithmically connected, creating streamlines. Possibly the gravitational tug of the companion galaxy, at the top of the frame, on the dusty gas of the reddish star-forming regions, visible in the Hubble Space Telescope image, enhances turbulence – stirring the dust and lines to produce the unexpected field pattern of the outer arms. via NASA

Unwinding M51 : The arms of a grand design spiral galaxy 60,000 light-years across are unwound in this digital transformation of the magnificent 2005 Hubble Space Telescope portrait of M51. In fact, M51 is one of the original spiral nebulae, its winding arms described by a mathematical curve known as a logarithmic spiral, a spiral whose separation grows in a geometric way with increasing distance from the center. Applying logarithms to shift the pixel coordinates in the Hubble image relative to the center of M51 maps the galaxy’s spiral arms into diagonal straight lines. The transformed image dramatically shows the arms themselves are traced by star formation, lined with pinkish starforming regions and young blue star clusters. Companion galaxy NGC 5195 (top) seems to alter the track of the arm in front of it though, and itself remains relatively unaffected by this unwinding of M51. Also known as the spira mirabilis, logarthimic spirals can be found in nature on all scales. For example, logarithmic spirals can also describe hurricanes, the tracks of subatomic particles in a bubble chamber and, of course, cauliflower. via NASA
When 2-year-old Gabriella Angelina Bommino died of leukemia, her parents despaired that “we would never know what our daughter would look like when she was older.” Through the work of Disney animators, however, the Bommino family did get to see an artist’s impression of what Gabriella would have looked like as a teenager. The studio introduced a hearing-impaired character in its cartoon series with a tribute to the little girl who may have been mermaid Ariel’s biggest fan. “We didn’t have a name or a face for the character, and when we heard about Gabriella, it all fit together,” Mermaid writer and producer Patsy Cameron said. Using a photograph, animators took the girl’s features and made them those of Ariel’s new friend, who was named Gabriella in her honor. The Bomminos, devout Catholics, see the event as “a way the Lord is showing us what she would look like.”
For five months, while she endured painful bone-marrow tests and treatments, Gabriella watched Mermaid 3 or 4 times a day. It so happened that she was being treated at Children’s Hospital in San Diego and that Cameron had done volunteer work there as a teenager. Cameron decided to visit the hospital and called the Child-Life Program offering to bring copies of a children’s book she’d written and Mermaid mementos. “I immediately thought of Gabriella,” Child-Life program specialist Kathy Blue said. “I watched the movie so many times with her. She knew all the lyrics to the songs and could sing along with them and would dance to the tape.” By the time Cameron arrived at the hospital, however, Gabriella had been sent home to spend her last few days with her family. She died shortly after.
“That Friday she came home, the Make-a-Wish Foundation had a party for her, with everything to do with Mermaid–every gift you could imagine,” Bommino said. “She continued to watch the tape over and over again. She sang and danced every day up until a week before she passed away, but even then she would still try to sing along.” Meanwhile, Cameron and her partners, Tedd Anasti and Jamie Mitchell, were so moved by Gabriella’s story and her affection for Mermaid that they decided, with the Bomminos’ permission, to incorporate her in their series.

The Helix Nebula from Blanco and Hubble : How did a star create the Helix nebula? The shapes of planetary nebula like the Helix are important because they likely hold clues to how stars like the Sun end their lives. Observations by the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope and the 4-meter Blanco Telescope in Chile, however, have shown the Helix is not really a simple helix. Rather, it incorporates two nearly perpendicular disks as well as arcs, shocks, and even features not well understood. Even so, many strikingly geometric symmetries remain. How a single Sun-like star created such beautiful yet geometric complexity is a topic of research. The Helix Nebula is the nearest planetary nebula to Earth, lies only about 700 light years away toward the constellation of Aquarius, and spans about 3 light-years. via NASA
