For the Shostakovich part I didn't base it on any particular bit of information my source is genuinely just the pain in my heart. If you want to figure out if I actually meant anything I recommend Elizabeth Wilson's "Shostakovich: A Life Remembered" I think it's a solid piece of work and truly one of the best Shostakovich sources the English-speaking West has. I find it fascinating how everyone whose favourite composer is Shostakovich resonates with him and his life in different ways. Everyone takes something different away from his music and every fan I know seems to share unique similarities with him. Unfortunately in my case this just so happens to be the "government hate him", "makes the music equivalent of being cut open with knives" and the "acquires 7 traumatic experiences and 2 disabilities every year from a new mortifying suicide-cancer-government-death-sex thing that sends him into dissociative nightmare previously rare and largely undocumented both medically and historically".
