It was a real doozy, the whole mess with Haruka. Atieno wondered why they would cut the detective from the show, but he decided to keep it to himself. He found the fact that the siblings were finally being compromised was a good move by the directors, definitely something that would give the audience something to worry about. The way Koya took the fall for his sister... it was truly a saddening scene, very well thought out.
It was almost too coincidental to him to find out that Kita Yasei was apparently his twin sister the day before the Nekodas were separated, and it was almost weird when it turned out that Yasei was also found dead not too long after the trial. It certainly was exciting though, and for the moment he wasn't sure if it was all just another plot twist for the viewers or if it was real. The trial came quickly after and, of course, Atieno stuck to his methods. Although he wasn't stellar at the whole trial deal, he tried his best to stick with everything. That is, until things turned for the worst and he found himself in a state of execution.
Cool! He always wanted to see how they pulled them off, after all! It was all rather exciting and there were no hard feelings. Except... He was pretty sure that he actually lost his right hand. And then the pain started and that was when he finally realized that maybe all of this was more serious than he first thought. And maybe Yasei really was his sister. And...
Maybe Yasei actually was dead. And he'd never have the chance to tell her that maybe they had a lot more in common than they thought they did.
It was certainly a challenge to get through the rest of the trial, he couldn't focus on much aside from the pain that was going through his entire right arm. Things were a blur until Aihara Rin confessed, and that was the last nail in the coffin. Family was important to him, no one could blame him for that. He just wanted to make sure that nothing happened to any of them. He just wanted to keep everyone's families safe.
"....But.... what about.... wha..t... about my family....?"
Atieno was not going to forgive Rin for killing, he didn't think he ever could, but there was no point in holding grudges. He simply wished that maybe it was him instead. Maybe things would've been better that way.
He found himself sitting alone, thinking about the past trial, the past few trials, the past few weeks, everything that had happened. It finally caught up to him just how jaded he was. He didn't even mourn people properly. He had no idea what to do, having to deal with the aftermath of everything all at once. His forehead rested against one of the pillars in the Mastermind's throne room, a very particular one. Cross legged, hand in his lap, he silently leaned against the pillar with his sister's image on it. His eyes were closed shut, deep in thought, his hand jittered, trying to find solace in the smooth texture of the ribbon on his boot. The rest of him was oddly still, oddly quiet, his cloaked silhouette was uncharacteristically closed off. After living through most of this game ignorant, he was hit hard, and now he didn't know what to do to fix it.

Atieno could certainly pick up the pace. Sayuri was being kind enough to offer the poor boy a place to sleep, and it barely occurred to him to start moving at all? The only thing that kept Sayuri in place was this one condition she had, and Atieno better hope that he could fulfill it as she expected.
He’d never shown to capable of practically anything when Sayuri was around; the only thing he’d done successfully is wear down her patience, and even now he still was proving himself a victor in that. Sayuri waited for Atieno to finally walk over to her, waited for him to cease his chatter, waited for him get to his knees so she could finally whisper to him - was that a snide gesture? Nevermind.
She leaned in close to Atieno, actually having to kneel over to make up for his miscalculation, and spoke quietly into his ear.
"You spend a lot of time with Rin." And she had no idea what deemed him worthy of always being in his shadow, but again, nevermind. "You know a lot about him, correct? Well, I need you to make sure of something. Tell me if I’m right."
She held Togemura up to her face, so her eyes were held in a thin bar that peered just over the plant. Then she started explaining with a hidden grin on her face. “He’s a noble warrior, er, a descendant of one, and honor is the most important thing to him. He has long black hair… okay I don’t need reassuring on that, so next. Rin would protect a person from harm so long as that someone has given them the same protection and care that he deserves.”
"…Well?"
Atieno's expression slowly turned into one of confusion. Was this about Aihara-san? He wondered why. But not for long, he had to listen to what she had to say, after all, so he stayed quiet as he held the edge of his cloak in his hand, brushing his fingertips against it repetitively. Quietly, he thought over what Sayuri had to say.
Did he know a lot about Rin? Did he really? He was kind of confused about that. Sure, he bothered the guy a lot, but he never really learned much about him. He never really learned much about anyone. He still had to try and help, though. What good would he be if he couldn't at least answer a couple questions? He looked down at the ground, confusion still on his face, but he was determined to try and come up with a good answer. If Sayuri of all people went to ask him for help, she must've been really desperate, he decided, and so he bit his lip in thought for a little longer before looking up at her from his spot on his knees.
"... Weeeell, yeah!" he nodded, entering gush-about-Aihara-Rin state. "That sounds about right ta me, Ka-wa-ka-mii-sama! Ai-ha-ra-san's a super noble guy! I wouldn't put it past 'im ta help someone out, 'specially if they're nice ta him! After all, he's suuuper set on that kinda thing, methinks! Ai-ha-ra-san's a good guy, he's kinda stressin' out right now but I think everyone is just a lil' bit, right? He's got his morals in the right place, though, that's for sure!"
"Why'd ya ask, Ka-wa-ka-mii-sama?--" He glanced over at the cactus for a moment, "-- Oh, and heyllo, To-ge-mu-ra-sama! Are ya doin' some sorta top-secret project er somethin' on 'im? Secret missions are pretty cool! I hope I could help n' stuffs, I'm not so good with rememberin' things like that, haha...."

You would think a loud-mouthed kid with shining green hair would be easy to find. Sayuri was mistaken. It was her own fault choosing to explore every room adjacent to the Main Hall before moving on to the courtyard. It was only after seeing his back there that she realized if Atieno had found a person to share a room with, then she would have explored the entirety of studio that she had access to for him, a person she didn’t even like, and on most days hated, And why did Sayuri need to see someone that she could hardly stand being in the same room with? To invite him into her room and stay the night, of course.
:”Hey, Matsui-kun. Come here.”
Sayuri stopped all of her forward momentum from entering the courtyard that could have easily carried her body over to Atieno. The two should be going out where Sayuri had just walked in from anyways, so it would be less efficient to walk to Atieno, and then, when they are done talking, both walk back toward the doors. It was only logic. Not the reason that Sayuri had; she just wanted to see Atieno put forth some effort in coming to her for what she wanted to ask him. When he finally arrived, Sayuri began to explain herself in that classic ‘I need a favor’ kind of voice, even though it seemed like the favor was being made to Atieno!
”You need a room, right? Well… you…” It was still tough to get the words out. “You can sleep in my room for tonight BUT it’s only on one condition!” Sayuri made sure to state her but as soon as possible. Doing anything for Atieno without some gain that she considered more valuable than her deed would be a cosmically stupid move. Sayuri motioned with her hand to get him to come closer and whisper to him. Nobody was around, but the viewers at home, the audience Monty always referred too, they didn’t deserve to know Sayuri’s secrets.
Atieno's wandering probably made it a little harder for her to find him, let's be real. He hadn't stopped moving since he stood up, hoping that he didn't suddenly pass out or anything. That'd be kind of terrible for him, wouldn't it? He was just making sure he didn't wake anyone up as he tried not to fall asleep himself. It was certainly odd to find Sayuri calling for him in the middle of the night, but he blinked at her as she waited for him to walk over.
...Oh, right. Yeah. He was supposed to go follow her now, he almost forgot. He felt like his mind was going in slow motion. After finally registering that he was supposed to walk over to her, he cheerfully (though tiredly) marched over to the gardener, tilting his head to the side when he got there. It was nice to know that she wanted to actually see him, but at what cost. What was the catch, he might've wondered, if he wasn't so trusting of literally everyone.
"Well, hey, Ka-wa-ka-mii-sama! Nice night we're havin' today, huh? Haha, well, I mean... I don't need a room... I-I can be just fine like this, maybe! I don't wanna, like, bother anyone er anythin', you know? B- but if you're offering... Well, it'd be kinda nice, but... Ya don't have to! But!! Thank you, gosh! What's the condition, if I may ask?"
At that, he bent at his knees to tilt down enough to allow Sayuri to whisper without anyone around hearing. After all, fairies kind of liked to gossip sometimes. He wanted to make sure that her secrets were safe with him! What kind of a friend wouldn't do that.
you will be who i say you are // [hh reaction/starter] {{kanna}}
A lost ghost was seeking a way to leave the material plane, and he wasn’t the only one seeing ways to leave places: Kanna was slowly walking along the empty eerie corridors of the studio like she was trying to find ways to escape. She probably was.
Her footsteps were as flexible and as quiet as ever, the sound of the bell jingling against her collarbones the only clue that she was approaching Atieno. Even when Atieno was in view, Kanna never spoke. It just seemed like she was going to walk past him, but in the last moment, she stopped in her tracks, her golden eyes focusing on Atieno’s features.
She was aware of Atieno’s fate, of course, but she wasn’t about to offer her help. That required speaking. So many things did, actually, and it looked like she had to open her mouth to ask about the things on her mind: “Your family.”
It certainly didn’t sound like a question, her voice just as disinterested as always, on her face the same distant mask she always wore on her features like a battle armour.
"Everyone is fine," Kanna said, asked, but it sounded more like a statement than anything else, nearly an encouragement. She brushed back a wisp of red hair back from her cheek and kept her golden eyes at Atieno’s earthy green ones.
A bell? The unfamiliar sound finally snapped Atieno out of his almost trance-like state, he tilted his head as he saw Kanna. What was she doing awake so late at night? Well, he didn't have room to judge. Perhaps she was just wandering around, because cats are nocturnal or something, right? She didn't even look like she was paying special attention to him or anything. Maybe she just lost something and only now found it and now she was going back to her room. That would make sense. Maybe? He didn't know.
He stopped that train of thought when Kanna stopped moving. She really did want to see him, then? That was weird, but he didn't mind it. It was nice to have someone to talk to after having been awake for who knows how long. He looked down at Kanna, only glancing at her eyes for a moment before focusing on her lip instead. Eye contact made him a little uncomfortable.
"Heyyo, Ka-nna-chan!" he greeted her, before she actually spoke up. His family? He didn't know what she meant by that. He looked rather confused. "My family? Uh..." Oh! She had more to say. Damn it, Atieno, stop stepping on people's figurative toes. "Right! Yeah! Everyone seems good! I mean, I dunno if you saw the same problem, but the screen kept doin' some kinda flickery thing earlier when I showed up in the room! But now everythin' seems fine and it's kinda confusing! Maybe Missuta Robotto-chan fixed it already? I got no idea... But!"
"I'm sure that everythin's gonna be fine, Ka-nna-chan!" He gave her a tired thumbs up, trying to reassure her that if she was worried about them, nothing would actually happen to them, right? Maybe he wasn't thinking properly, he has been up for a while.

The vote could've been a lot worse. He didn't know what good his new ID card would do for him, but he had it nevertheless, which was at least better than having cleaning duty or something else of the sort. He turned the card over in his hands four times before stuffing it into his bag, gently fixing his cloak over himself once again. He stayed in that position for a while, sitting on a step from the staircase, eyes shut as he focused on the rough texture of the tan cloth against his fingers. He would be okay as long as it was with him, it made anywhere feel like home. He visualized home for a while. It was easier to remember after seeing it in the pre-motive.
He was worried about the motive. It kept him up at night. Well, that wasn't the only thing keeping him awake, but it was a huge factor. Was everyone going to be okay? This thing was getting a little out of hand. Maybe it was more a social experiment than a TV show at this point. He wasn't sure, though. Was this legal, he found himself wondering, psychological experiments were really hard to keep in the works for so long.
It was... gosh, he didn't actually know. It was late at night as he wandered through the studio like a lost ghost trying to find a way to leave the material plane (he was not a ghost, of course, because that would mean that he was dead, which he was not. Why would he be?). His steps were soft and light and he was uncharacteristically quiet. He was oddly quiet at a lot of points recently, but it was as if he didn't have a voice at that point. He was simply trying to stay awake as long as he could, it was against the rules to fall asleep outside of a designated room, and he didn't want to bother anyone with asking them about it, so he decided to try and stay awake, it wouldn't hurt him, he did this before!
...Yeah, he was totally going to be able to last the night, he thought, as his eyelids started to feel a lot heavier than they did just a couple hours ago.

Even if the words out loud had stopped, Yasei’s brain never slowed down for a second. What kind of brain-damaged idiot wanted to be around a person crying, for no reason, totally unprompted, after just pointing out that she wasn’t okay with all the tact of a truck driving through the side of a house at three in the morning. She was going to stop this. Right now. Right…now.
…She didn’t stop. Maybe it wasn’t physically possible at this point, and she’d just have to drain out and go back to eighteen more years of dry eyes. What a horrifying thought. When he took a step forward, she didn’t actually take a step back, but she crumpled defensively inward, folding her arms to her chest like a shield, because no one was going to save her from herself, she was the one who had to stop all this fucking nonsense before she became such a nervous wreck that she asked Monty to spear her and put her out of her misery or something like that. Not that it would. Them losing their minds was exactly the point of this little show, wasn’t it? Might as well milk it for all it was worth. The nail gun was pointing straight up, practically hidden in her sleeves, clutched tight like a stuffed animal, all but forgotten.
"I’m not—" she tried again, but her words were gravel and sandpaper and frayed tenuous everything and it was such a substandard try that she felt like ripping her throat out. It’s not like it could make her voice sound any worse. It wasn’t as if she had anything important to say now. How long had that gormless look meant pity and condescension, anyway? She was obviously everything he thought she was and more.
With a little sharp movement, without unfolding or uncovering, still within the cocoon of her own arms, safe, she shifted the nail gun finally under one arm and pressed the heels of her hands to her eyes as if she could force all the tears back in. No one was a pretty crier. Certainly not her. She was disgusting. This had to stop. She took a slow step backward, blindly—the door had to be just behind her.
"—It’s fine. Fine. I’m fine."
He didn't know what he did wrong. He wasn't exactly good with timing, and he couldn't quite get a person's emotions very easily, it was all far too confusing. All he knew was that Yasei was crying and it wasn't a good thing at all. Yasei never cried. Why was she crying? Whatever the reason was, he couldn't just leave her to deal with it herself, that would be terrible. He really wanted to help despite not knowing exactly how.
Though he was being cautious about the chances of Yasei full-on running out or attacking him, either way, he didn't know what else to do. He powered on, even if a nail gun was being pointed straight at him. Maybe he just didn't notice it. Maybe he was pretending not to notice it. He made a quick glance over at an odd part of the room (presumably where Rieko would be, if she existed) with a nod before taking another step or two. She needs some sort of help. Rieko was right. She's hurting, don't you see. And with any blue-coloured fairy, all you really could do is listen to it. He was going to find a way to help at least somewhat, that was his plan. How he was going to do that was kind of hard to say, but he was going to get to that part eventually.
"..." As Yasei shifted and held her head in her hands, Atieno's shoulders dropped. No... She was really upset. She was really upset and he had no idea how to help her. He wasn't cut out for this kind of thing, he was only a fletcher. Where was the SHSL Feel-Better-Person when you needed them, right? She took a step back and that was the point where Atieno got worried that he was doing the wrong thing. How was he supposed to know what she was thinking if she wasn't saying anything? Why did people have to be so confusing?
Even though he was far too nervous to say anything, he found himself walking right up to her as she spoke words of absolute denial. Come on, Yasei, you're better than that. For some terrible reason, he found himself wrapping his arms (as well as the ends of his cape) around the sword swallower as gently as he could. He didn't know what to say to make her feel any better, and he didn't know if that was going to help at all either, but there he was, hugging an armed and on-edge member of the weapons club. A risky move, but he really didn't have any other options. He wasn't just going to ignore her.
they never told you? who never told me what? // [hh premotive reaction]
Day three strikes day that a certain fletcher managed to snag the video room before anyone else did. He was waiting this time. Parts of him told him that maybe other people wanted this more than him, but the rest of him was sure that he really needed to see them again, at least once. It's been so long, he just needed that one bit of normalcy back. Surely if someone really wanted to see their families more than he did, they would've gotten there before him anyway, right?
As he watched the screen quietly, his typical bubbly smile broke down into something much more truly happy. He could even feel his eyes begin to water as he stood there in silence, his parents, his brother, they were all still doing what they did best. It was definitely rewarding.
Until the screen flickered the first time.
It was confusing, definitely. He stared without any idea what was going on. Why were things malfunctioning now of all times? It just kept switching feeds and he had no idea how to fix it. He started picking at his fingers again, not sure what was happening. "...Missuta Robotto-chan, is somethin' wrong with the screenie thing?" he asked at one point, but to no avail. He just tried to stay focused on what he was familiar with: Sorin and his parents.
And then it flickered to the studio a couple times as well.
What was going on and why was it happening to him? Maybe it happened to the other two as well, but he'd never be sure about it. Instead, he spent the rest of the day completely confused and lost and not sure why the screen was doing whatever it was doing. Missuta Robotto-chan, you failed him yet again....

Maybe it was just her imagination (or her damned pride) but his voice seemed to continue to echo around the room, him just idiotically talking to himself about things that didn’t matter, and another stab of anger nearly bowled her over, this time directed inward—how far the mighty have fallen if this is the kind of human interaction they must be purposely seeking out. She shouldn’t have said anything. She should have run out before she was even noticed to find some real secret place. She…was exhausted. And then of course came Atieno’s words directed at her, tearing at her, the worst case scenario. Her whole visage was tumbling down and now she was a visible wreck and she had nothing else.
"…I don’t know what you’re referring to." Her voice was not nearly so flat now. It started off as a quiver only to break right in the middle of referring like she was a pubescent teenage boy. “Nothing happened. We survived, didn’t we. There’s nothing to be upset about. And even if a person were upset—it would hardly be—reasonable—”
Her face twisted in anger. She was only digging herself into a pit, she would gain control over her voice if it killed her. If she couldn’t exercise control over herself how could she hope to exercise control over others. How would she ever expect this to get any better? How could she even expect to survive? Her brain even manufactured the cold, even voice she should have been using, a beacon so far away that it only served to show she would never make it. You know you’ve done wrong, so fix it. We don’t need any more people around here making mistakes. A person who does nothing but make mistakes is a mistake, and you’ve already made a mockery of yourself enough, FIX IT NOW.
"I’m not—" she tried, even more quavering, and the sound of her own destroyed voice, shredded and skewed and torn up inside, her powerless to bring herself back to true neutral, broke the dam.
"Don’t say that, you don’t know, nothing’s wrong, you don’t know anything—” and just like that, all hint of her composure was gone, she’d ruined herself irretrievably, not just to Atieno but to everyone she’d ever met or cared the slightest bit for, in the end she couldn’t do anything right, not this one important thing. The one saving grace was that she stopped her disgusting babbling, but the only sound that remained after was her shuddering breath, her gaze fixed firmly on her unmoving feet as she completely fell to pieces.
He really didn't mean to upset anyone. Everyone just seemed more irritated and worried and upset than they ever were before and he didn't know how to react to it. He wasn't exactly the best at cheering people up when they felt this terrible, but he couldn't just leave at this point, he already asked his stupid are you all right? question and now he was going to live with it. Rieko said it was going to be okay, and he just had to trust her. The moment he heard the break in Yasei's voice, the fletcher knew that things were not okay at all. She was always so levelheaded, and now... gosh, he felt terrible. His expression slowly became more and more worried as the words shakily came out of her mouth.
"...S....orry." The moment he noticed her burst of anger, Atieno lowered his head slightly, glancing away. He didn't know what to do. What was he supposed to do? He was sure he was only making matters worse at that point. In silence, he gently clasped his hands together, picking at some of the scabs on his fingers as he fidgeted. He didn't say anything else until Yasei went quiet.
He only looked back up when he realised she was crying. Yasei. The Ice Queen. Melted down enough that goddamn water was pouring out of her eyes. Slowly, he took a couple cautious steps toward her, careful not to startle her or anything. He didn't move too close, of course, but he wanted to be able to talk a little softer but still be heard. Be gentle, Rieko said, people are fragile in states like this. With a quick nod toward the fairy, he swallowed hard and spoke in the softest voice he could.
"...I... I know I don't... know much but.... R- Rie-ko-chan was really... worried about you when she saw you a-and... I'm... really worried too. P...lease don't... cry I.... Don't like... seeing you so upset...." He was honestly at a loss of words. At this point, he dared to move a little bit closer, still feet away.
"E- everyone's been... hit hard this time, m... methinks.... It's.... Painful to watch everyone suffer...." He didn't actually have a good reason to start crying, but he was doing it anyway.

Everyone was thinking badly of her now. Everyone had watched her lose her mind in there, and she knew it. After the trial let out she didn’t stick around, and was maybe the first person out of the room, definitely not stopping for any asides, not for Yara, not for anyone. She had to get away. She had to be alone.
She took to the newest area almost immediately—sure, everyone would be curiously poking their heads around here sooner or later, but maybe any reasonable person would stick to places they knew in the aftermath of some horrible tragedy that culminated in…what, three useless deaths? Three useless deaths that weren’t her fault no matter what anyone said. She hadn’t voted for Ryou or Amane, she hadn’t sold herself to the robots to save anyone’s skin, she’s called them out on their rule breaking from the start—only to get pulled off the subject and into a frenzy later like an idiot. Maybe it really was her fault. She should have noticed earlier that the trial was out of her hands.
Sometime during her wandering the tears started to fall. If anyone had happened on her at that time she might have murdered them just by virtue of seeing her debased all over again, but no one came as she threaded her way through the hallways and new-provided murder settings, tears falling quietly but unacknowledged even by her (until she couldn’t help but notice the gross texture of her face, like it was melting off, and scrubbed all the makeup free with the backs of her hands.)
It was at this point, expressionless, stripped-down, falling to pieces, that she entered the trophy room, empty but for Atieno facing all the decorations. For a split second she might have killed him, running all on impulse, but then she dug her own nails into her palms and the anger passed, leaving her hollowed as usual. She didn’t want to move again for as long as she lived.
"…Have you found…anything interesting in here." Her voice was so flat that the sentence came out as a statement rather than a question.
Oblivious to how everyone else might be seeing things, Atieno was still sure that nobody was doing anything wrong. There might've been more and more arguing as time went on, but he couldn't help but hope that maybe everyone was just confused and lost and scared, as according to the script, of course. Nobody was actually confused or lost or scared. But they sure seemed like they were.
He wandered through the room as he inspected every award. He didn't really have much else to do. Luckily for him, he finally reunited with his long lost best friend Rieko, and they both stared in comfortable silence, minus the occasional chatter about flowers or gold or something lighthearted. Thankfully nobody was present for the times he seemingly started talking to himself out of nowhere. That would've been awkward and hard to explain.
Atieno didn't even notice Yasei's presence until she spoke up. He blinked a couple times before turning to face her, and instead of his usual cheery smile, he recognized this as a bad time for joking around and instead tried to be serious for once. The trial was obviously terrible for the sword swallower, and he didn't want to make things any worse for her.
"....N- not really. Nothin' outta the ordinary, at least." Small talk wouldn't really cut it, he knew. He was far too worried about everyone to stay so lighthearted for long. The fletcher didn't really like focusing on upsetting things, but he was really concerned. After a slight pause, he spoke up again.
"...Ya-sei-chan...? I'm... sorry the trial was so hard on you. Please don't... be too upset...." Rieko was very worried about Ya-sei-chan, and therefore Atieno was too.
they learned blasphemy // [hh reaction/starter] {{open}}
With a rather blank expression on his face, the fletcher left the trial room without another word. He was concerned about everyone. Ya-ra-chan didn't seem like she was doing too well, Ya-sei-chan was... different. Su-zu-me-chan was traumatized... Everyone was slowly being worn down and he really didn't know how to help with it at all. After all, people tended to find him more annoying than helpful in the first place, and he didn't exactly know how to make anyone feel better.
That plot twist was pretty incredible, though, he had to admit. Who would've thought it was going to be Monty? Certainly not him. He never would've figured it out at all. Maybe if he asked Missuta Robotto-chan prior to the trial... Ah, he felt kind of bad about that. He was still so confused over so many things, though, and he was absolutely lost without a script.
His more quiet train of thought (for once) led him to exploring the newest area of the studio, and he stepped into the trophy room to explore.
"...Hm.... I wonder where these came from...." These things were really boring, but at least they were pretty, he decided, turning his complete focus onto reading all the names of the plaques and awards. He didn't even seem to notice as someone else walked into the room.
The Honnoji Effect // Open
Rin glanced over at Atieno just as he was reaching up to take one of the remaining torches. He had to slip out of his geta and stand on his toes atop the sandals to get it out. Just terrible. He turned the torch over in his hand - real wood and everything.
"That could very well be," he nodded, "These are intended to start fires, after all."
There was only one way to know, though. He glanced over at the carousel horse, caught a whiff of the singed flesh, and his stomach turned. He took a moment, his complexion paling a little at the thought of going over there, and a hand was raised to his mouth as if that would prevent him from vomiting again.
No, the feeling passed, and he squared away his resolve. He passed the torch to Atieno, as it were, straightened himself, and walked over toward the burnt horse. The acrid tang in the air burned at the inside of his nostrils and he grimaced because it was the only thing that kept him in one piece.
But, as he found out, Amane’s corpse was largely in tact. In fact, the fire hadn’t seemed to have gotten into the horse at all, just around it. As if…
"The killer placed his body into the horse," he mused aloud, "And then lit the fire?"
Taking the torch in his hands, Atieno watched Rin with slight nervousness. He didn't really want to go anywhere near the corpse, nor the corpse horse... Nor... Any of that, for that matter. Even if he still thought everything was fake, the whole scene was pretty terrible smelling, and although nothing could possibly be real, it sure looked like it was.
The description that Rin started to give out was a pretty good one, the fletcher thought. He closed his eyes for a moment to go through his memories, maybe something was... Ah...
"Like.... Like'a brazen bull? Wait. Uh... No, that can't be right..." Squinting just a little bit, Atieno frowned and shook his head. "...Well, brazen bulls're s'posed ta be made outta metal, so I guess not... Wouldn't have the same effects...." And he thought he was on to something for a moment.
Never mind that. He was being useless just standing around watching. He wandered over to the other body, the one that didn't smell like burnt flesh, and took a nervous look to see what he could figure out. Not a problem, of course, for the fletcher, right?
Except his very careful investigation of the stab wounds didn't pose to be much help either... Or... Did it? "...These cuts're all really wonky, R-.... Aihara-san," he called out, "it's like Yu-ki-e-chan was just stabbed all over!" It could have just been bad propwork, but maybe it was relevant.

After a brief departure, Rin returned to the crime scene, his face washed and his eyes flushed out. His eyes were still quite bloodshot, and he looked rather pale, like he wasn’t particularly feeling well. And he wasn’t. He had never gotten a face full of smoke before, and had recently expelled his lunch into a toilet thanks to it.
Either way, he was over it now. Despite looking like shit, he approached with a brisk pace, a straight back, and a steely expression; the effects of the smoke were mitigated by his usual severe and businesslike air.
Without hesitation he entered the still-smouldering cathedral and glanced around. Only the middle where Amane’s corpse was was badly burned. His face twitched in a vague approximation of a grimace at the thought of a burned body, so he turned his attention to other things.
He circled the room, giving the corpses a wide berth, when he noticed something off.
Aloud, to no one in particular, he mused, “Am I being deceived or is there one fewer torch than before?”
There was a whole big mess of people as the fire alarm went off. Atieno was one of them, of course, and he very quickly made it there as the doors were opened. A fire. A real fire? Why? What was happening? The fletcher wasn't exactly ready to go stepping into a room full of smoke and fire, so he waited until some others decided to check instead. After Rin managed to help get the door open, he left, but then he came back. Maybe the smoke was just too much.
Deciding that if senpai was all right with checking the scene out at this point, Atieno would be safe as well, and he quietly tagged along not too far behind. After a quick glance around, he decided that it was safe to join a conversation without sounding like he was looking for it in the first place. Yes, he was still a little bit wary about Rin, but they made up and everything, right? So it couldn't be THAT bad. It was worth a shot, and Atieno was sure that he was a good person to investigate a case with, especially because of the trials before.
"D'ya think that's what started the fire, mayhaps? It was like, lit and then... All this stuff happened! Or somethin!" Excellent observation, Atieno. He tried his best to ignore the smell of the room as he spun around in a circle slowly, trying to take the whole room in.

She was being touched again. Even though Sayuri was about start tearing the fabric off of Atieno’s shirt, it didn’t justify him gently wrapping his arms over her. She instinctively squirmed like little worm, stifling her tears, before once again giving up and sobbing into his coat.
She wasn’t going to yell at Atieno for everyone he said she could trust. Aihara was somebody Sayuri hoped she found a friend in him. She was still on the fence with Yasei, and Yara? This was only more proof of how stupid Atieno could be. She was about to break away when Atieno once again had to open his dumb, stupid, idi-
"Wh-! You’re hugging me? You… you aren’t allowed to do that I told you to never…" The rest of that sentence tapered off into a mutter. The wrap of Atieno around her neck had apparently just reached her brain; her senses were slowed down by all of this emotional turmoil. The rest of what the boy said nearly gave her a heart attack, because this went against every guideline Sayuri had operated under for so long. It scared her. "Sh-shut up Atieno. I don’t need you- any people- no, I- fine- Aih- mean, Togemura-" She desperately gasped for air, not realizing she was mostly inhaling cloth. Sayuri finally pushed him away, stumbling a few steps back herself, Before nearly collapsing into a mess on the floor. She struggled to compose herself and stood weak-kneed, hugging herself now because she was all that mattered. Well, herself, Togemura, and two very important people she had just remembered. She whispered their names a couple of times in succesion. "Taiki and Aikobetsu…" Once again, forgetting one of the most noticeable people was standing right there in the room with her.
Atieno wasn't exactly very good with crying people. At home, he was the younger sibling, and at school his best friend was tough as nails. If anything, they had to deal with more crying than Atieno did. He was silently panicking as Sayuri cried all over him and it wasn't doing him any good at all. How do you fix something like this, especially when the person that's crying on you hated you? He didn't know, and it probably showed with how hesitant he was to do much.
For a little while, he thought that maybe things were just going to be okay if he was just there as a backbone. Sometimes people just needed to cry for a while, right? Maybe that was all that she needed. He really hoped so, but it didn't seem like it was the case. The moment she pushed him away, he bit his lip and tried not to look threatening (not that Atieno ever really looked threatening in the first place). He watched as she almost fell, a nervous expression on his face.
"I-.. I'm sorry." He really didn't mean to upset her. It looked like everything he tried to do upset her anyway, but he wasn't one to think negatively. Surely there was a way to make her feel better. Even a little bit. And he was determined to try. "I didn't mean ta... bug ya or anythin'.... Please don't be upset... I... I really want ta help you, Kawakamii-sama. It's... not fun watchin' you cry..." He was trying to keep his words to a bare minimum. Wait... Whose names were those? He frowned, confused. He wasn't sure if he knew who they were or not, but he also didn't know if he should ask or not. Then again... He nervously asked, "Who're they...? Are they important to ya?"

Atieno needed to understand this. Sayuri was on track to becoming a less violent human being but if she had to force this memory out of him, she would, and she could, and it seemed that she did. In whatever dialect the kid spoke in, Atieno started a ramble that normally would have made Sayuri punch him at this range. He really should have stuck with just saying that he knew what she was talking about, since all the other phrases spawned some new strange feeling in Sayuri.
"I’m only doing this so my karma doesn’t return and haunt me! Kar-ma. Do you know what that is, stupid? It means when you do something ‘nice’ I stand back and think for a second and don’t just bite your fingers off when you touch my back!" Though, Sayuri didn’t seem to be standing back right now, she was thinking. "I can handle the accusations on my own! It was obvious the evidence was shit! What’s hard to deal with is not being able trust any of you. I don’t even want to! I have to, though, or I might actually die from doing what should be the right thing.” She tightened her grip further and pulled Atieno close enough to feel her words as they left her mouth
"Because I am alone. According to whoever controls my fate, I am. I have Togemura, though-" She broke staring for a second to glance back and make sure her potted pal was still sitting nicely. "-but. Plants don’t count. They don’t have souls, say the same gods that put them there. They do! They should count!" Sayuri barely gave Atieno time to breathe after letting go of his collar. Her hands then went straight for his gut. She didn’t throw a punch with her arms wound up to look like it, though. Instead they went for the sides and dug into the cloth that was there! Sayuri’s face quickly followed, practically headbutting him in the stomach.
"WHY DON’T THEY COUNT?!" The girl knew she looked like nothing more than a toddler that didn’t get their fourth one-more lollipop, but had given up, and let herself cry. Sayuri seemed to forget about who she was even latched onto as she wept. As a brief reminder, it was Atieno, who she hated since he first opened that stupid mouth of his. That same mouth that continued to get Atieno into even more trouble with her, and this could possibly the worst trouble yet!
Karma... Was she just doing that because she wanted to make sure that nothing bad happened to her, then? Atieno was confused. He wasn't sure if he was supposed to be glad that bad things wouldn't happen to her, or if he was supposed to be upset that it was the only reason she came to talk to him. It didn't really matter in the long run, of course, but he couldn't help but wonder. And trust? Well. Why would she be upset about trusting them? There were some really good people around! Like... Like him! Yeah! He was pretty trustworthy, he thought. And then there were people like Ya-sei-chan and Ya-ra-chan and Ai-ha-ra-san. There were a lot of people that were nice and trustworthy and stuffs, he thought. But he decided not to say that out loud, and instead he frowned, shifting his feet a little bit to make up for being pulled downward so much.
He didn't know what to say, and Sayuri's stare was kind of making him uncomfortable. He tried to look away. He could feel the mood dropping quickly, and he didn't really like it very much at all. What was he supposed to do, though, there was no way he could just leave her there like that. He didn't really understand what she was getting at, and he wasn't exactly sure what to say about Togemura, but he knew that it was bothering her, and that just made it bother him, and now he could feel his eyes welling up even though he was still so confused. And then...
She hugged him? He surely wasn't expecting that at all. He stood, still uneasy, now with a tiny gardener latched onto him, and he didn't know what to do. She was clearly more than upset over it. Why else would she bother to even touch him? He shut his eyes tight, grabbed onto the edges of his cloak tight, and then he completely hesitated. Would it be a bad idea to try and be comforting to a half angry half distressed Sayuri? At this point he didn't know, but he decided that if anyone was going to get hurt because of it, it was going to be him, so it would be okay anyway. After another slight moment of hesitation, he carefully wrapped his arms as well as the ends of his cloak around Sayuri, though it was kind of awkward because of their heights, the sentiment was the same.
"H- hey... If they count to ya-... you, then they count. To... gemura-sama is obviously real important to ya and that's okay. I think he counts. And I think it's kinda silly to have to rely only on people to talk to n' stuffs. People can get real borin' anyway! Whatever's important to ya is important to ya and I think that's what matters in the end. You aren't alone, K...awakamii-sama. It might seem like ya are, but I promise that you aren't."
