One of my favorite underrated HisoIllu moments from the Election , one that I never seen discussed before:
After Killua proves Gon can be healed without putting himself in danger, Illumi backs off. The mission is essentially over. Hisoka also leaves.
Except… he doesn’t actually leave.
Instead of returning to his own business, Hisoka heads straight to Hunter HQ and kills Teradein Neutral.
Teradein had just gone on live television promising that, if elected, he would reveal the names and Nen abilities of the “malicious Hunters” responsible for the massacre.
As far as the Association knew, the target was Illumi. Nobody knew Hisoka had been working with him from the shadows. If Teradein followed through on his promise, it was Illumi who would be exposed not Hisoka.
But what makes this even more interesting is that Illumi never asks Hisoka to kill Teradein.
Throughout the Election arc, Illumi is completely focused on his mission: separating Killua from Alluka, understanding Nanika’s abilities , he asked Hisoka to kill the butlers , the lemons …Even after he backs down, he simply watches Killua heal Gon and follows them to the hospital. He never stops to worry about Teradein’s campaign or tells Hisoka to “take care of him.”
Hisoka acts entirely on his own.
By that point, he had already fulfilled his role. He had eliminated the Hunters pursuing Illumi, waited for the opportunity to kill Alluka if necessary, and once it became clear Alluka posed no immediate problem, his job was over.
He could have walked away.
Instead, he chooses to eliminate the one person publicly threatening to expose Illumi.
Could there have been strategic reasons? I doubt that ! From a HisoIllu perspective, I find that detail fascinating.
Togashi never tells us Hisoka did it because Illumi asked.
He simply shows us that when a problem arises for Illumi ,one Illumi himself doesn’t even seem concerned with,Hisoka takes care of it anyway.
I love that Togashi never gives these two grand declarations or obvious romantic moments. He gives us small actions that can be interpreted in a dozen different ways and somehow those tiny moments say more than any confession ever could.
