“Oh, it’s you!” The exclamation was unusually expressive, but she had never expected to see him again. Tokyo was an enormous city, after all, and she generally was never in the same place twice. “I’m quite well. I’e made a full recovery. I’m still benched for now, however.” She tipped her head to look at him better; the problem with being small was that sometimes she couldn’t tell if someone was genuinely tall, or if it was her own height that was the oddity. “And you? Your chest hasn’t been bothersome, I hope.”
“Well...” He sheepishly scratched his cheek. He really hadn’t expected to ever see her again, yet here she was. How did one talk to girls? “The bruise hasn’t completely healed. It’s a really ugly colour? It still hurts if you poke the center of it. But I’m mending! I’m mending, don’cha worry. Aha ha.” His head tipped a fraction to the side. “Maybe it’s for the best that you’re still benched? Can’t have you playin’ until you’re completely-completely better, right? Thanks again for the, uh, change of clothes, by the way.” Did she even remember getting them for him?
“Yosh! I can do it, just leave it to me! Um. What was it you needed me to do for you again?”
“Aha...ha. Wow.” He stared at the red-haired girl in awe. “Funny bumpin’ into you again.” A small, nervous chuckle came out of his throat, half-strangled. What were the odds of this? Not high, he figured. “You, uh. Is your head okay? Cause you seemed pretty out of sorts last time around.”
Most people she offered to buy things didn’t think twice about it; something about looking a gift horse in the mouth. She shrugged off this thought with ease, deciding him odd, forgetting that most people she offered to buy things for were actually friends of hers, rather than victims of her muscular density. “Medium, boxer briefs.” She repeated thoughtfully. “It’s no issue; things like this aren’t bothersome at all for me.” Her response was dismissive. It didn’t occur to her that she had probably just implied often running into people who proceeded to wet themselves, and probably wouldn’t for another few weeks. With that, she whisked into the shop, and came back out five minutes later with a bag in hand. “The convenience store should have baby wipes, and plastic bags as well. Then, I think we should go to the hospital, as I’m quite sure I have a concussion, and I refuse to go alone.”
Ah. She’d gone ahead and bought them before he could stop her. Sheepishly, he accepted the fresh clothing. How could this not be bothersome? How often did a situation like this crop up? Holding the bag carefully in front of the wet spot, he headed into the convenience store’s toilet to go and change. When he emerged, he found the girl still standing there. So she wasn’t joking about her concussion, was she? Maybe that’s why she was being so nice to him. Would she remember any of this in the morning? He hoped not. Or rather, he hoped that her memory was not impaired, but that she did not recall him making a fool of himself. As though they would run into each other again. “Um. Are you gonna be okay? I’ve never cared for someone with a concussion. I mean, at least not on my own. Ah, I guess that’s why we’re going to a hospital.” He chuckled weakly. “Do you know where the nearest one is? I, um. I’m not from around here.”
“Wait, shouldn’t I come with you? Will they let you into a store like that? After all, I ran into you, and that probably caused it.” She took a few steps forward and held out her hands as if to calm him, tripping a little over her feet as she did so. The ringing in her ears certainly worsened the pressure in her head, and balancing was getting quite difficult. “I’ll go in and buy you some. You go into that convenience store and wait in the bathroom. Ah, but what size do you wear?” She raised a hand over her mouth to hide a yawn, walking towards the nearest clothing store. Lucky this whole thing happened in the middle of Tokyo, she thought. “Do you prefer boxers, briefs, or boxer briefs?”
This just added insult to injury---literally. His chest was throbbing; was it bruised? In any case, he couldn’t believe she was so willing to just buy him a change of clothing. Who did that? Only saints. Not even saints. Not that he doubted her saintliness, but---oh, man, she asked a question. “Um.” Now or never, Chihiro. “Medium. Boxer briefs?” He thrust his hand out. “W-wait, I can’t have you buying me underwear! That’s too much.” Both financially and mentally. He couldn’t believe he’d just bumped into a stranger and lost control of his bladder. Who did that? He was scum. The lowest kind of scum. He would retreat into a hole in the ground and live with mutated turtles. That would be better than this.
“Oh? And what about girls with funny-colored hair like mine? Are they more pretty?”
“It’s iffy. I’ve always been partial to dark-haired beauties.” Chihiro, stop now, if you know what’s good for you.
“Why, you should. Don’t you know? I’m your soulmate.” Riku pinched his cheek. Let’s see how well she can fool him.
“I don’t know about that.” He laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I don’t normally go for guys with funny-coloured hair. ---Not that it looks bad on you.”
Pokes him. “–Hi.”
"Eh? Hi there. Do I know you?” He poked the other boy back. This was how you made friends, right?
So he might have been reading a book on how to talk to girls. ---For the next time around. You know. As one does.
“I am feeling a bit dizzy, now that you mention it,” though she didn’t make any move to sit, or to do… anything, really. Perhaps she should, but then again, should is only a suggestion. She lowered her head slightly, blinking profusely to get rid of the odd fog in her eyes. Her hair smelled sweet, the shampoo she used suddenly overwhelming, and it was only when perfume intermingled with the distinct smell of ammonia when she noticed his predicament. “I–Did you notice—Are you aware that your pants are wet?”
“W-Wet?” He panicked. Sure, he’d had to go to the restroom before bumping into her and sure, he suddenly didn’t have to go now, but that didn’t mean that he’d---did it? It did. Chihiro’s face lit up like a tomato. He could think of few things worse than publicly embarrassing himself, but embarrassing himself in front of such a pretty girl was definitely high up there on the list. “Oh, man. Oh, boy. Oh, brother. I gotta get some new pants. Um. This isn’t pee!” As if it could be anything else. He hopped around on the spot, not wanting the wetness of the fabric anywhere near him. “Ahhh---Miss, you just wait right there, okay? Feeling dizzy is not a good thing! I’m gonna---I’m gonna get some pants.” Because obviously he couldn’t just walk home in these.
“Quite fine, yes. Are you sure you should be getting up so quickly?” She reached without thinking, gently touching his arm in an attempt to steady him. My, but he is flustered, she thought, though the only emotion on her face was concern. “You might’ve hit your head or something. Perhaps you should sit down.” Again.
She touched his arm. They were one. “Yes’m, I said I was fine.” He shook his head. “I only hit my butt, so, uh. My head’s fine, you know? I’m good. I think.” Could a tingle from his tailbone up his spine be bad news, or was he just nervous? “Maybe you should sit down. To recover from shock. And stuff.” Smooth, Chihiro.
@uchikibozu
“My apologies, I didn’t see you there. Are you alright?”
“Y-Yes, Miss! I’m fine!” He quickly moved to his feet, despite his throbbing tailbone. “More importantly, are you alright?” Even though she was the one who knocked him over. “I mean, you look alright, but one can never be too sure!” A small, panicked laugh escaped him. Gosh, she was pretty.
“Mmmm… I’m actually a little behind on a big wedding cake, ‘cos the colours for the fondant got mixed up. But if ya don’t mind me decorating while I help, it’s no problem!” She offered two firm thumbs ups and a dimpled grin as affirmation. “I need someone to taste test the frosting anyway. The last batch, one of the others confused the sugar with the salt, so we’re on high-alert!”
He laughed. “Sugar and salt? How do you mix those up? Even I wouldn’t do that.” He probably would. In the heat of the kitchen, all sorts of mistakes were waiting to be made. “I’ll gladly taste the frosting, you know that.” His head inclined bashfully. “I mean, taste-testing is about all I can help with...I don’t think I should try piping the icing again.” The last time was horrific to remember. “As long as I get a little bit of help studying, I don’t care how much or how little attention you pay.”
Snap. Click. His phone’s camera went off. “S-Scuse me.” He wrung his hands anxiously. “You, uh. You were in the shot. I mean. Not that you ruined it. I took a picture and you were in it. You completed it. Is that alright?” Beads of sweat began to form. “Crud, I shoulda asked before hand. I’m s o sorry.”
“Lunch is the most glorious part of the day, don’t you think?”
He sighed happily and tucked in to see what his sister had packed.
“---An’ so he opened the bag of marbles an’ found himself a glass eye!”
He laughed, nervous. The story wasn’t funny, and neither was the punchline.
