I donât mind confessing my deepest imperfections in hopes that another person may relate and not feel so alone in their boat with holes. I am full of holes and flaws, and they make me a more humble and genuine person. Iâm not ashamed to admit that I made a mistake, and you shouldnât be either. Sure, our mistakes can cause us to feel hurt and humiliated, but theyâre a learning experience to grow from. We canât change or erase the past, so we may as well plant seeds in our crap and allow something wonderful to bloom from it. So recently I messed up big time. This is not surprising to me, but that doesnât make it suck any less. I keep going over the events again and again in my mind, obsessively pinpointing all of my fatal missteps that left me feeling so empty and frustrated. Oh why didnât I do xyz differently?! Yet life doesnât give us any do-overâs; I will never be able to erase or rewind that moment. Iâm sure there are lots of people in this holey boat of mine, so hereâs my advice for continuing onward when you feel like youâre choking on your own regret. Write a letter! We never mean to make mistakes, and a poor outcome usually goes against the grain of our good intentions. The first step is coming clean. Maybe you smoked that cigarette you werenât supposed to, or had a drink you swore youâd never touch again, or said something unnecessary and passive aggressive when you knew better. Address your letter to that thing or that person or that situation. In the first part of the letter confess everything you know you did wrong. Take ownership for your actions, no matter how unintentional they were. In the second part of the letter make a list of every reason why that thing or person or situation is no longer a healthy influence for you. Why does it no longer serve a purpose in the stellar life youâre trying to lead, and why are you better off without it? Then hold onto that letter and re-read it any time you need to keep yourself in check. After youâve wiped your slate clean, the next step is to forgive yourself. Youâve already fessed up, so you have to release the guilt of an unchangeable experience. Some people may find taking ownership to be the hardest part, and itâs certainly not easy to admit our faults, but I have the most difficulty letting myself off the hook. I like to think Iâm a smart girl, and when a smart girl does a dumb thing boy does she make sure sheâs punished for it. I have no problem taking extra heaping helpings of guilt and blame. In fact, I tell myself itâs âwhat I deserveâ to âlearn my lessonâ (pretty messed up, right?) Now tough love can have its place, but thereâs no need for selftorture. Once youâre aware of the mistake all you can do is learn, grow, and continue to move forward. They say âtime heals all things,â and itâs true. After youâve done all of the above that doesnât mean that thing or person or situation wonât be the first thought in your head when you wake up or the last thought on your mind before bed. However, time has a way of dulling that intense clarity. In order to move on try filling your days with productive tasks. Sitting inside stressing, moping, obsessing, and torturing doesnât do any good. Try a new activity! Find something that gives you a sense of purpose; something that allows you to be defined beyond your mistakes. Most importantly, treat yourself with love and compassion. Speak kindly to others and yourself. Human beings are seriously flawed creatures. No matter how hard we try to avoid messing up we are bound to flop somewhere down the line. As long as we aim to live consciously and gently then we leave ourselves the room to grow and change -Erin Hackbarth

how to save and make money as a student
making money
tutoring! one of the easiest to make good money in limited time! you donât have to make home calls if you sign up to an online tutoring agency and tutor over skype
sell your old clothes. to friends/classmates or online (eBay or depop are my favourite platforms)
sell your old notes. this is easily done online and a good way to make a little extra cash
sell your skills. sites like etsy and redbubble are good places to make money off your creative talents
saving money
save ÂŁ1378 in a year with my free printable
make coffee and tea at home. those daily £3 coffees add up quickly
take your own mug to coffee shops. if you canât resist the temptation of a coffee shop coffee take your own mug. pret a manger gives you a 50p discount if you bring your own mug and caffe nero gives you double stamps
donât carry money with you all the time. this will just make you tempted to spend
never buy another bottle of water. carry a reusable bottle with you, bottled water is very very overpriced considering most cafes will refill your bottle for free
donât use apple pay. if you always have access to money youâll be much more tempted to go into that shop and buy the top you passed in the window
food prep! carry snacks and a packed lunch with you to avoid pricey snack bars and ready meals. this is also an easy way to be healthier
home cook. this is always cheaper than eating out and 99% of the time cheaper than pot noodles/ramen. home cooking is even more affordable if you do it in bulk or with friends
borrow and download free ebooks and audiobooks as much as possible
make good use of the library. instead of buying books borrow them for free, a library membership is often free if you belong to a university/college but a membership is still often cheaper than buying lots of books if youâre a big reader
bring reusable bags to avoid paying for plastic bags and be kinder to the environment.
go paperless. avoid printing costs and look after the environment
cut your own hair. going to the hairdressers is expensive and can be saved as a treat but if you just need to trim your split ends thereâs no reason why you shouldnât do it yourself or get a friend to help you
pre drink! if you are going out then drink alcohol at home itâs much cheaper than buying it in pubs or bars
other
use cash. itâs much easier to avoid spending money and stick to your budget when you can see exactly how much you haveÂ
keep track of your saving and spending. i love the âpocket expenseâ app. this will also show you what things you are overspending onÂ
collect coupons and loyalty cards. points make prizes!
create a culture of clothes borrowing among your friends. instead of always buying new things for events
