Some Celestial Mirror

There are nights like this one. Nights when I stare through the dark, and past the ceiling. This stare, isn't the type that finds an object and remains fixated, but instead somehow becomes reflective. Inverse. As if my gaze could penetrate the dome and into the depths of the cosmos, making contact somewhere beyond comprehension with some celestial reflecting pool constructed with the sole purpose of sending that stare back across the infinite expanse to its point of origin.  To look into a mirror is one thing. To see myself as another person might. But this is something more. It is my deduction that this great distance and time travelled by my sight before it returns to me reveals greater details. Things that lie undetected to anyone, including myself.  I realize myself, and in this realization I am made aware of my achievements. My scattered successes are made apparent and I relish in them for a time. More potently, however, I am faced with my own short comings. For a moment I am struck by this with the feelings you might naturally expect. Guilt. Regret. Anger. I am overcome with a sensation not dissimilar to what I imagine it must feel like to drown. I struggle despite myself, and in my scrabbling am suddenly faced with a new perspective.  The things I would claim as failures are not final. The battles I have lost to myself are not truly decided. It is through these trials that I find a new inspiration. A realization that in spite of the pits I have haphazardly dug for myself over the years, I am designed for something larger than me. A sudden spark in the dim introspection captures my attention. I am ignited, and all at once engulfed in what quickly becomes an overwhelming realization that untapped potential is not spent or wasted potential. That there is always a way to become more than what have been. A better father. A better husband. To excercise my abilities and create. CREATE. It is life's greatest joy, and our greatest privilege  I am a human being, but beyond that physical form I am something greater.  Sleep becomes easier, and in it's embrace I am finally able to stop staring.
