With the release of his latest single ‘Concrete’, we talked to English singer-songwriter Tom Odell from his favourite spot in London, and what he thinks ‘SID’ stands for!
What is your favourite book (fiction / non-fiction)?
I think probably the Little Prince. 'And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.’ There are few books that provide some relief to all our unanswered cries, the terrifying and melancholic loneliness of living in this beautiful universe.
Musically, who would you like to collaborate with if anyone?
I have a wonderful band, which has taken many years to build. I’m creatively satisfied working with them. But I’d like to work with a film director to make a soundtrack to their film. I love the marriage of music to the screen. its so powerful and moving.
Biggest challenge to date in your music career?
I think probably making this last album, Wrong Crowd. I wrote over a hundred songs to get to the 11 that on the record. I’m really proud of the album and I’m loving touring it around the place at the moment.
Biggest personal achievement in your music career?
I’m proud of winning the Ivor Novello award. Its an award decided by so many songwriters I admire, and has nothing to do with celebrity or record sales. I remember reading about the Ivor Novello’s when I was 14 and starting out in songwriting, and dreaming of one day winning one. I still cant quite believe they gave it to me, and some days think it must have been some sort of mistake!
Favourite spot in London?
My favourite spot in London is this tailor in Kentish Town. Its been there for many many years and run by a chap named Chris. It has a piano in the shop, in amongst the chaos. And it smells of old suits and is covered in needles. Chris is full of wisdom and I can listen to him talking for hours. And he is a brilliant tailor.
What do you think 'SID' stands for?
I’m quite interested in flying, and just read a book on it. I think in aviation terms, SID stands for Standard Instrument Departure. I’m not sure what you guys intend it to stand for, but I’m very sure its far more interesting than what jumps to my very strange mind.
