On Sunday, December 28, 2014, I received this auto-reminder that my Tumblr site had been around for 4 years. Awesome. If only I paid more attention to this humble online presence. Well, that day will come, and when it does, I'll be stealing more moments for myself and taking the time to post them. Until then, here's wishing whomever might come across these words, a very Happy New Year in 2015.
Stealing a moment to travel in the future, to learn about present day China before K. and I journey there later this year. This TED talk video of a presentation by Martin Jacque provides an interesting take on how we in the West need to change our perspective on "the rise of China."
I'll need to step up my game...
...if I'm going to steal enough moments to read all the books that have piled up on the bedside table.
I had the reading list down to a manageable few before the holidays, but it turned out to be the Season of the Book. Those that were gifts I piled on top of others that had seemingly materialized simply from the desire to read.
Not that I'm complaining. There is a lot of wonderful, thought-provoking or escapist reading awaiting whatever moments I'm able to steal from the busy days and evenings ahead in 2011.
Right now I'm well into Stewart Brand's How Buildings Learn, a book that I've been wanting to read for years and which K. gave me as a sort of bonus book gift. I will be moderating a discussion of this book at February's SF UX Book Club event, and will start things off by pointing out that there is much the information architect in the digital world can learn from the practice of building architects in the analog world.
The waning moments of 2010...
K. and I went for a long walk through the Valencia and then 24th Street neighborhoods.
Urban treks like these are one of my favorite things to do. A nice way to spend some of the waning moments of 2010.

Am stealing a moment to work...
I'm on vacation between the holidays, but am working today in an attempt to catch up on some projects that have gone wanting for my attention.
In September of 2010, I attended a seminar presented by Tom Lockwood, PhD and President of the Design Management Institute (DMI) on the topic of "Building Great Internal Design Organizations."
An excellent seminar, very thought-provoking and full of great ideas, best practices, and references.
One such reference was to a Youtube video created by Charles Leadbeater: "We Think"...
Mr. Leadbeater believes that the Web is a source of "mass innovation," which defines the 21st century and differentiates it from the 20th century of mass production. "New ideas," as Mr. Leadbeater suggests, "come through conversations," and what better medium than the Web to foster an environment for discussion and collaboration.
Stealing a moment for a conversation, virtual or in person...always worth the effort.
I am late to this moment...
...that stolen moment which revolves around the pleasure of a cup of coffee.
I never much liked coffee, certainly not in school or college when I really could have used it to get through all-nighters. Maybe because I just couldn't stomach that awful, acidic American brew poured from large pots or vending machines.
The first cup of coffee that I ever really enjoyed was a true French espresso, sipped under a shade tree in the courtyard of a family home near Cognac, France, where I worked one summer in the mid 1970s. Thereafter I began a slow love affair with good coffee, and would enjoy an occasional espresso after a delicious meal with friends.
It was my wife who introduced me to the pleasure of cafes and coffee houses...and really good coffee. And ironically, while she's trying to cut back on her caffeine input these days, I'm the one who wants to sit in a cafe and sip a delicious latte or macchiato.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, we are indeed lucky to have a wonderful choice of coffee roasters and pleasant cafes to choose from: Blue Bottle or Ritual to name two of the best roasters, great cafes like the little Subrosa Coffee on 40th Street or the Bica Coffeehouse on College Avenue, both in Oakland.
Another favorite spot is the (relatively) new sculpture garden Blue Bottle Cafe located on the top floor of SF MOMA -- a lovely, peaceful, artful spot for stealing a moment that came rather late in life to me.
