In 1991, eighteen strong women came together to create Sigma Theta Psi Multicultural Sorority. An academic and social sorority aimed at encouraging and supporting ALL women through their academic and life endeavors. What is your favorite memory of Sigma Theta Psi?
My favorite Sigma memory was the day I was told by the director of student activities at SJSU that the university recognized Sigma Theta Psi as an organization, after so many others doubted it would happen! I still have the copy of the letter addressed to me.
What is your favorite part about Sigma Theta Psi?
I love the bonds I've seen created because of the sisterhood. I love reading everyone's stories [on social media] and how their lives changed once they crossed. I love when sisters create all the beautiful artwork and share their amazing memories. The pictures I’ve seen are absolutely touching. I can feel the bond and it makes my heart happy and giddy! I swear it gets me teary-eyed every single time I see or read something new.
Why did you decide to help create Sigma Theta Psi?
Ahh yes, the million dollar question! When I went away to college, it was a bit of a culture shock for me. I grew up in a very small town and I attended private school from kindergarten through high school, so you can imagine how different this was for me. At SJSU, the culture was so different and difficult to adjust to. I had no clue what it was going to be like. It was a completely different world from what I was used to, and I felt completely alone. I am the first in my family to attend university, so I had no warning how hard the transition would be. After adjusting a bit, a roommate and I set up meetings with other female students who had interest in perhaps starting a chapter for another sorority from Chico, but there was no spark. They were a Latina sorority and it just didn't feel right for any of us. The girls gave up, but I didn't. A year (and another roommate) later, Isabel Arias and I talked about it. So I tried again. I had Bea Gomez in a business class and told her about it. I met Tina and Lupe Pedroza and Blanca de la Torre at a party (of all places) and told them about it. Then we just spread the word to ladies that we felt had the right qualifications. We met some more wonderful and strong women and brought up the idea to them. We felt there was more of a need to integrate. There were so many 'traditional' sororities, Latina sororities, African-American sororities, an Asian sorority- everyone seemed so segregated. We realized we needed a multicultural organization to integrate and unify women of all backgrounds. We needed to support each other through our college studies as well as everything else life threw at us. It was challenging enough being in college as a woman. We felt we could support others to finish their studies and make a difference while incorporating other backgrounds. We all shared the same goals and dreams – to succeed in EVERYTHING we set our minds to!
What is your favorite tradition? Are there any in particular you created?
I love crossover. I haven't been involved in any recently, so I'm not sure if it’s changed much, but I love the fact that someone worked so hard to earn our beautiful letters and wants to continue this incredible journey. I created the original swearing in oath.
How do you envision the future of our organization? Where do you Sigma Theta Psi in 10 years?
I really hope that one day we can have chapters across the country and overseas. That would be such an incredible accomplishment for our organization. Having at least one chapter in every country that our sisters all originate from. In 10 years I see Sigma Theta Psi stronger than EVER and to hopefully have expanded farther away. Perhaps seeing some of our [children] cross over.
What embodies a woman of Sigma Theta Psi?
A woman with the drive to succeed both academically and in life to become more than what's expected of her. A woman with integrity and respect for herself and those around her (that deserve it.) A woman who leads her own life and future. A woman who never needs to depend on others to become herself. A woman with true honesty in her heart, her mind and her soul. A woman with an open mind- there is no place for ignorance in life. A woman who is loyal not only to her sisterhood, family, and friends, but to herself always.
A woman of Sigma Theta Psi is and always will be a true Lady. Respect yourself and others will follow.
What advice do you have for sisters of our organization, especially newer sisters? What should they do to be the best Sigma sister possible and realize their full potential?
First and foremost, find out who you are meant to be. Research it, think about it, explore your mind. If you made it as far as crossing over, you obviously have more potential than you give yourself credit for. At this point, you have already proved to yourself how dedicated you are to finish what you started. You can accomplish something so incredible. You are ALL meant to be someone great!! Be the best possible sister you can be and it will come back to you two-fold!! There will be times when you will just want to give up, but that is NOT what you're about and that is NOT an option for you- EVER! Call somebody- anybody. Even if you have never talked to them, any sister should be able to get you through the toughest times and you should be able to do the same, whether you have ever met each other or not. You are so much stronger than the average person. The sisterhood is here for you through thick and thin and you WILL bounce back from whatever it is. In reality, not everyone will get along the same way, but as sisters, no matter what happens, we all share the same respect for one another. We learn to grow up and put aside the cattiness that we as females are known for. We're not all going to be BFF’s, but we are all still sisters and united. Always have that in your mind. Always respect yourselves and those you share your letters with.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Let it all out. Never be afraid to take a risk. Don't be a follower. Be a leader. You ALL have it in you. Don't sell yourself short. Reach out to a Sigma sister that you've never met. The experience is very rewarding.
I am so very proud at how far this organization has come. You all have made our amazing organization even better. I am humbled and honored that you have chosen Sigma Theta Psi and that I can call each and every one of you my sister. This is an extraordinary sisterhood unmatched by any other, and I sincerely thank you all from the bottom of my heart for this amazing journey you have all chosen to take with me and the rest of the Founding Mothers.
Eternally in love and Sisterhood,
Liz E. Vasquez
