lipreading
only about 30% of what is spoken can be seen on the lips - the rest comes from the sounds produced.
jonas is - alright - when it comes to reading lips. it is very difficult and if the person tilts their head in just the wrong way, he will miss what is being said
he can pick up about half of what is being said. most of the time, jonas heavily relies on context, and even then it could be wrong
try it — look in a mirror and say fifty then fifteen — it looks the same
deaf culture & things jonas does that i don’t always include in writing part 2
it’s time for another super long information filled post!! ( find part one here ) ahhh this took forever, but here is part two!
disclaimer: while these things are important in deaf culture, i will be writing mostly how they pertain to jonas! not all d/Deaf/HoH are the same and don’t assume what works for one, works for another!
please feel free to send in questions that you want me to include in these posts!
body language/facial expressions
called, “nonmanual signals” are an extremely important part in signing
these include facial expressions, movements of lips, overall body language, head direction/tilts/movements, shoulder movments, etc
the NMS can change a sign’s meaning entirely
NMS can sometimes be considered part of the “grammar” of the sentence
example - if your eyebrows are raised when asking a question, that means the question requires a yes/no answer. when the eyebrows are lowered, that indicates a wh-question
wh-question = who, why, what, where, when
if using eyebrows being lowered, you don’t always have to add the wh-word! just depends on the rest of the signing

deaf culture & things jonas does that i don’t always include in writing part 1
sometimes these things don’t always pertain to where the reply is going, so they don’t always get written, but these are all things that are part of jonas’ life!!
warning, this got super long lmao questions that were asked are at the bottom
deaf identity:
there are a seven different categories that deaf people could claim. jonas in particular views himself as: deaf dominant bicultural
he can function comfortably in both the deaf and hearing worlds, however he prefers deaf/those who can sign
this doesn’t mean that he doesn’t want to communicate with those who do not sign! it just means that he will be very active in teaching the language to others.
information sharing:
jonas doesn’t have the same access to news as hearing people do – he doesn’t listen to the radio on the way to work, has the television on in the background, or overhears conversations from other people.
deaf people support each other by telling each other whenever they can.
even with advancements in technology – interpreters aren’t always reliable and captions are not the best – jonas continues to rely on other deaf people for most of his information.
there might be things in current events that he is behind on, or has no idea about.
especially since he blocks out things during writing sessions. no social media or anything – he could miss a lot
when telling stories & info there’s really no such thing as “too much information”
almost every detail is included
gory, graphic, all of it

asl information & things that jonas does that i don’t always include in writing
so, i was originally going to make this part of the deaf culture posts, but it became way too much and needed its own thing!
disclaimer - while some of this information is general, when i go into detail about how jonas does things it is just for him. not all d/Deaf/HoH signers are the same!
also this got so long. if you read through all of it ilusm it means a lot
ASL vs SEE vs PSE
