POLIMODA SHOW 2016

A brief āclear mind-reviewā of the 2016 Polimoda Show: we needed a little time to collect and share our thoughts on the collections presented this year. We are former Polimoda pupils ourselves and we are well aware of the work and attention that each student and teacher of the school dedicated to the production of the diploma collections. In this edition of Polimoda Fashion Week, the school has been able to communicate an attention to social issues that only art is capable of in a time of crisis, and that fashion is capable to translate into a universal language, where institutional channels lose their grip. Another matter of interest was the presentation of the TALENT DEVELOPMENT project: an integrated system of scholarships, business incubation and tutoring which will select, finance and support five young talents among Polimoda students and alumni.Among the selection of the 20 best projects presented by the school, Farma282 chose to review five.
Presenting the collection āHow a Life is Bornā, Federico Cina, winner of the 2016 Best Collection prize ex aequo with Mirco Arena, highlights the importance of right to family: breast pumps inserted in the male garments, details from a military orbit, destructured classic male garments, present us a man who takes care of his own son, in an attempt to normalize a situation that is still perceived as an anomaly by the more conservative fringes of society. Fashion is the bearer of a social message, a reality that concerns us. The inspiration for Mirco Arenaās menswear collection are the āSamiā, an indigenous people from Norway: embroidery depicting human skulls represents the good omen rituals that merge with the icy atmosphere of the collection, in an introspective dimension of mind and heart. āINTIMACYā by Miranda Hochkoeppler also carries along the lines of social message: the designer want to investigate shyness. To tell us about her vision she uses technical fabrics combined with wool, combined with unconventional materials such as straw. The womenswear collection by Deborah Segun, āNever wear whiteā wants instead to communicate a message of reflection on the ideological concept of femininity. It celebrates women and their strength against society constraints through hand-painted illustrations on linen, denim and cotton, with two-dimensional wooden structures and three-dimensional reproductions of the female body. Finally, Sofia Mollbergās collection āAlternation of memoirsā wants almost to be a poem, drawn on what surrounds us: the knowledge that what we learn during our journey, work and interests remain as traces on our bodies. The Illustrations on the outerwear lead us through the experience of the designer growing up in Sweden, and the paper applications on the fabric are positioned a bit far away from one another, to represent the ability to move to other places that become, even if temporarily, our home.
As a final thought on the collections we would like to express a very personal feeling of ours: there seemed to be a lack of connection to the current fashion market. The artistic direction of the school wants to communicate a style linked to aesthetic sophistication, but we would like to see more minimal collections too, although it is still true that art and fashion aesthetics create prototypes that need time to be processed.
