“You always underestimate my family and we always surprise you. You should know better by now,” Jen teased, taking a sip of her own drink. She was never sure if she considered Simone a friend, their banter had too much of an edge to call it simple teasing at all times. They also kept so much from one another. Still, they spent far too much time together to deny some friendliness. Jen was comfortable with the ambiguity of it. They had a rhythm that worked. “No one is asking for your laundry list. Just pick something petty and give it some emotional significance. It’s probably better to get it out of the way before you’re drunk.”
“Some day I’ll come to terms with the fact that you all are just as interesting and good as us Lombardis.” She shook her head, idly toying with the empty glass in her hand. She was something close to her fifth or sixth and while she considered herself to have a high enough tolerance, she knew she was only a few more drinks from starting to slur. “You’re right, though. Might as well make some shit up before I end up revealing state secrets to the world.”
