Now that Feef was old enough to keep his brothers entertained, Minnie finally had some time to herself. She, Jarvis, and Joe finally sat down and talked together without interruption. What started as a solemn conversation about her late husband quickly turned into banter.

"Figured you'd be up here. Have you seen my lighter?"
built a lab and got the boy his own research station! he is sooooo happy about it, what a nerd
Trying to reenter the world of academia and philology was quite difficult when you were fifteen years behind on the latest research. Byron had written letters to old colleagues, asking about research and smaller projects he wanted to expand on, but most were retired like him or too busy to take on another research project. Then, Byron had received a letter from a Dr. Armeen Rostami, a professor of Assyriology and ancient linguistics at University College London. Like Byron, he had also received his PhD at Columbia, graduating two years before, and was interested in continuing and updating the work Byron had done previously. The prospect of working with someone so young and involved with the field was delightful, and after reading some of Rostami’s work, Byron eagerly wrote back and arranged to meet with the thirty-year-old professor.
The street they had agreed to meet at was busy, but Byron didn’t mind people watching. He liked seeing how much London had changed from when he lived there. People walked past the cafe where he sat outside as he looked for the face he had seen only in a photograph. Then a tall man with a thick beard walked toward him, and he looked exactly like the photograph of Dr. Armeen Rostami.
Byron smiled and stood up as the man made his way over. “Dr. Rostami?”
He nodded as he held a hand out to Byron. “Your grace, it’s an honor to meet you.”
“Please,” Byron insisted. “I would prefer Dr. Walsh, or better yet, Byron is just fine.”
“Then I ask you to call me Armeen,” Armeen replied as they shook hands.
As the pair sat down and ordered coffee, Byron was quickly enthralled by the charm and intellect of Armeen. They spoke of recent politics and academic gossip, as well as their respective specialties in their field. For the first time since Byron’s retirement, he felt like he was truly in his element. Boredom was such a common emotion at Walshstone Park that going out and doing something he loved felt like the equivalent of riding a roller coaster, more so when Armeen asked Byron to officially collaborate on a research project together, which the duke happily agreed to.

Feef was getting bigger, so he got the old nursery room all to himself. His little brothers had a hard time adjusting to the change. Every time one of them woke him up in the middle of the night, he did his best to comfort them.
Soon enough he was starting school. When Denny and Louis caught on to the fact that their brother was leaving without them every day, going to school started with a chase down the path.

The MacKenzies had become regular guests at the Alcotts' farm, providing much needed company. Ever since the news of war had reached the Bay, it had been hard to discuss anything else. Hearing about it from Iain and Claire, however, was starting to ignite more of Elisabeth's idealism. There had been a reason she agreed to move out here with Thomas, a wish to create something new and carve out their space in a young country.
Listening to Claire's enthusiastic conversation, she began to wonder whether she really was thinking too much of the risks. After all, the chances of success were high, and with Iain already resolved to go and fight, Thomas would not be going alone. By the end of the night, she was quite resolved: if Thomas still wanted to go, she wouldn't oppose him.

For a long while, Minnie felt like she was cycling through emotions minute to minute. While she could keep up a cheery facade for the boys fairly well, she found herself taking any chance to get a break from them. Joe and Jarvis proved to be great at distracting them long enough for her to gather herself.
And as she always had, Diane provided her with quiet solace whenever they found the time.
