Okay... It was just the bookstore. This should be easy enough. As long as she doesn't think about The One Who Must Not Be Named, then everything should be fine. Sighing heavily, the archaeologist tugged her light cardigan closer to her. God, she can't keep living like this. Nilay knows that. But it was also easier to imagine curling back up in bed beneath her favourite sheets and rewatch The Mummy for the millionth time. At least that would help cheer her up. Finally making it to the bookstore, she made a beeline to the Ancient History section. She was due for new material, after all. Yet, as she skimmed through one of them, she couldn't help the annoyed scoff that left her lips. Who even wrote this?! Without a second thought, she took out a red pen from her bag and began to scribble away. Making corrections and grumbling to herself until she glanced upโand froze as she spotted another person. "Um..." Shit. Nilay cleared her throat. "I, uh... am planning on buying this?"

trigger warnings: foster care, infidelity
Nilay has spent her entire life wondering if the gods hated her. After all, she was abandoned by her parents on the steps of an orphanage when she was a baby. No one seemed interested in adopting her, much less fostering her for too long. She spent years watching as other children continued to get adopted, find their own homes, while she stayed. Stuck in a life of foster care where she had no one but herself to take care of her.
Fine. So be it that way.
She ensured that she was fed and clean, even when no one else seemed to notice nor cared, because she noticed. She cared. And while no one expected her to make anything of herself, Nilay was ready to prove everyone wrong. Showing a wicked intelligence from a young age, it hadn't been long until some scholars took notice of the child from Mardin. Her professors adopted her as she turned twelve and graduated high school, leaving with them to head to Scotland.
Her professors were curious to see what kind of affect a higher education, particularly one different than she would've received had she stayed in Mardin, would have on the girl. If she would flounder and need to return to high school, or if she would swim like an Olympian.
Once again, she amazed everyone.
Nilay continued to speed on through, her eidetic memory growing stronger the older she became. Her getting faster at reading, yet still remain remarkable memory over what she just read. Though she still wasn't as equipped as being social and making friends as her professors wished, they were proud of her for her progress. Eventually moving to Cairo to continue her studies, then straight to Chicago so that she could earn her doctorates at the University of Chicago as part of the Near Eastern Studies department.
Being able to learn everything about the Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern world brought an emotion to her heart that she wasn't entirely familiar with: hope.
She had fallen in love with it all. She collected anything and everything that had to deal with this magnificent world, her entire life completely immersed in her studies. Though, part of her was frustrated over the lack of fictional stories revolving Ancient Egypt and the Near East. Nilay had began to write her own stories, first some poems and short stories, until she eventually began to write full novels. It became a fun past-time whenever she wasn't busy with school or excavations. Eventually even getting her work published in Archaeology Magazine.
Still, there was more to her story than even she realized.
Coming to Los Angeles had been a shocking opportunity. After spending her years working in various museums, climbing up the ladder in numerous ways, she had been presented with the opportunity to curate her own wing on Ancient Egypt and Near East at an archaeology and anthropology museum located near Sunset Ridge. While part of her had been a bit anxious, the archaeologist was overall excited for the chance of a new adventure. Falling in love with her wing and ensuring that it was the best in the entire museum.
Though... That wasn't the only thing that captured her heart.
Never has Nilay been in love with a human being before. Particularly not someone modern and living in our contemporary world. Yet there wasn't a single word that could express her happiness. How she began to envision an entire life with her partner, them growing older and supporting each other in their goals while creating ones together as well. For the first time, she began to think positively about the future.
Then... the fighting began. She couldn't understand where the jealousy and lack of trust came from. No matter what she said or did, it didn't really seem to matter. She tried so hard to convince that she was telling the truth: there was nothing going on between her and her coworker; they were simply friends who worked together. That was it. That should've been the end of it.
Then her partner confessed that they cheated on her. Committing the crime they accused her of.
Trust has always been an incredibly massive part of her life and was never given out freely. Having that trust be broken the way it was... it completely shattered her. Leaving her unable to look at her partner without wanting to sob and flood the entire earth ten-times overโand, even then, she knew that she would still have tears to shed.
Now, she must continue on with her life and her careers to ensure that there was still stability in that one factor. Even though her thoughts keep drifting back to the person she should not waste a single second on.
Despite having never been a gamer her whole life, Nilay loves Assassin's Creed Origins with her entire heart. Whenever she isn't busy, she's ready to sit on her couch and just play for hours. She also loves the games Odyssey and Mirage from the same franchise, but Origins holds her heart entirely.
Nilay's author career claims are Costanza Casati, Elif Shafik, Emily Watson, and Shannon Chakraborty. To be specific: The Daevabad Trilogy by Shannon Chakraborty, with The City of Brass (2017), The Kingdom of Copper (2019), The Empire of Gold (2020), and the novella The River of Silver (2022) ; The Adventures of Amina al-Shirafi by Shannon Chakraborty (2023), The Tapestry of Fate: An Amina al-Shirafi Adventure by Shannon Chakraborty (2026), and an Untitled Third Amina al-Shirafi book ; The Sumerians Trilogy by Emily H. Wilson, with Inanna (2023), Gilgamesh (2024), and Ninshubar (2025) ; Babylonia by Costanza Casati (2024) ; There Are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafik (2024).
Growing up in Mardin, learning more about the history of the Near East and sharing that with others has been greatly important to her. She has enjoyed finding an outlet in writing that allows her to breathe for a moment without fear of being judged. It's one of the things she's most vulnerable about.
For her whole life, Nilay has believed herself to be unlovable. Her parents left her without a second thought; who's to say that no one else will? She has guarded herself her entire life, so breaking her guard down with her partner only to be betrayed has left her shattered. Now, she's began to believe that she is undeserving of love, now that this has happened.
