This is the post for the assignments for the final.
So for my plexi glass painting I decided create an image that summed up the wild year that was 2020. Basically the moat famous images and terms that I thought related to this year the most were masks, toilet paper, and then fire for the huge dumpster fire that was 2020 in general. I combined the images and created this design. Then while painting it I wanted to test out having one of the elements stay clear so I decided not to the paint the fire and instead paint the background, leaving the flame clear and transparent. Overall this was an interesting assignment and a great way to end the semester.
This is my final painted collage that I created. The paint kept drying darker than I mixed it so I hope that the discord still works. Overall I had a lot of fun doing this assignment I hope you guys enjoy it too.
These are the colors that I mixed and created to make my discords. I used the ultramarine blue, the darker yellow and the red that was close to it on the color wheel. I had to add a lot of white to both the blue and red to create a color that would be similar to the yellow when converted to black and white. I took me numerous tries and a lot of failed mixes to create these colors so I hope I did it correctly
This is the collage I created using the cut out pieces of paper. I forgot to post it last week and just decdided to add it as one of my posts for this week. I wanted to kind of replicate a landscape in a way so the giant sphere is supposed to be the sun shining over clouds and mountains to create my not so abstract collage.
I feel like I made a mistake the minute I put this blue down. Hahaha. It dried so dark. Now I had to figure what colors could be dissonant with this one.
I had the same problem numerous times and it got really frustrating so I definitely feel your pain lol it made me reconsider my whole color palette so many times
For my artists research I looked into an English pop artist named Peter Blake. He is a collage artist and mostly deals with pop culture and trends of the time. An interesting fact I found out about him while doing my research was that he was the co-creator of the sleeve design for one of the beetles albums.
Colored Paper Collage
I was inspired by Jean Arp’s artwork so I went forth making these organic and bubbly shapes. After cutting them out, I liked how the shapes seem to complement each others forms (like a puzzle). So I played with that idea on the top two compositions. The right one is separated by color. The bottom right has the shapes touching each other and the shapes look as though they are circulating around the little yellow circle. The bottom left explores symmetry. I believe all of these compositions has a flowy movement to them. But the composition I’ll paint is this one:
I chose this one because it looks like the face of a dog in an abstract way, reminiscent to the style of cubism. Also, I think that the interaction of the shapes work well.
Do you guy’s agree or think another variation works better?
I love how abstract and aesthetically pleasing your designs are. Looking forward to see your final piece
For my artists research this week I decided to look into a painter named frederic church. His paintings spoke to me because although I thought the tinted colors caught my eye during the creation of our color wheels, his dark tones with specific use of colors works really well too. I especially like his piece called Aurora Borialis. Overall thought I really like his pieces and think he captures landscapes and moments in time perfectly.
These are my two painting exercises for this week. I learned that color is a lot more interesting than one may originally think. I had some trouble painting these pieces but I still tried to fulfill the assignments to the best of my abilities. Also this may be random but I realized that’s I much rather prefer painting with acrylic than oil paint.
This is my finished collage painting. I used cool colors on the astronaut to separate it from the warmer background. This was probably my favorite assignment of the semester so far and I had a lot of fun painting this piece. There are a few things about this piece that I wish I had done better but all in all I am happy with the end result and had a great time creating it.
For my artists research I looked into an artist named Wangechi Mutu. She was born in Kenya and specializes in painting, sculpture, and performance art. Her paintings are very vibrant and complex and that’s why they spoke to me. There is so much going on that the more you look at it the more things you’ll see.
This is my progress post for my collage painting so far. This may just be my favorite assignment yet and I’m having a great time creating this piece. So far I only worked on establishing my color palette and painting my background. I was very interested in using the colors tinted with the white because the lighter tints caught my eye more while creating the color wheel and I think they do a good job at emphasizing the mood I wanted the background to portray. I’m going to work on finishing up the astronaut with the medieval helmet this upcoming week.
COLLAGE PAINTING!
Progress Post.
I did it again and I am much happier with this and the other one. I think that there is an awkward shape to the yellow space, I might fix that later, or not. I could not get the right colours and blah blah. But I’m working on my need to be ideal. I changed the feathered headpiece to a halo because I thought it would look neater. I am thinking to call this “Snake in the Garden”, “Sleeping Fool”, or “The wolf in a sleep’s head”... it’s a work in progress!
I love the textures that you were able to create by using the brush in such unique ways. It really goes a long way in giving your collage more depth. It looks amazing.
For my artist research I looked into an artist named Kurt Schwitters. The reason his collage pieces stood out to me rather than others is that he uses typography in his collages often. As a graphic design major I understand that type is one of the most interesting yet difficult things to work with. So the fact that he was able to use it in his collages and still make them work really caught my eye.

This is my color wheel for this week. I’m starting to enjoy the process of painting a lot more than I have in the past. I’ve painted color wheels before and I find it so cool how this one looks nothing like the ones I’ve done previously.
