Album: eighth track off of Nevermind

"Drain You" had more guitar overdubs than any other song on the album: This included one clean track and five distorted tracks; two tracks of the Mesa Boogie, two tracks of the Fender Bassman, and one that they called the "Super Grunge" track., which was a pedal on the Fender Bassman. Cobain tended to dislike heavily overdubbed songs, and so Vig had to tell Cobain lies, such as that tracks did not record right or were out of tune, in order to get him to do so many takes. The strange noises during the middle section of the song are caused by a rubber duck toy.

Kurt said that he liked this song more than Smells like teen spirit.

In number one is: Neil Peart

Neil Ellwood Peart is a Canadian musician and author. He is the drummer and lyricist for the rock band Rush. Peart has received numerous awards for his musical performances, and is known for his technical proficiency and stamina. Early in his career, Peart’s performance style was deeply rooted in hard rock. He drew most of his inspiration from drummers such as Keith Moon and John Bonham, players who were at the forefront of the British hard rock scene. As time passed, however, he began to emulate jazz and big band musicians Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. Peart is distinguished for playing “butt-end out”, reversing stick orientation for greater impact and increased rimshot capacity. “When I was starting out”, Peart said, “if I broke the tips off my sticks I couldn’t afford to buy new ones, so I would just turn them around and use the other end. I got used to it, and continue to use the heavy end of lighter sticks – it gives me a solid impact, but with less ‘dead weight’ to sling around.”

In second is: John Bonham

John Henry Bonham (31 May 1948 – 25 September 1980) was an English musician and songwriter, best known as the drummer of Led Zeppelin. Bonham was esteemed for his speed, power, fast right foot, distinctive sound, and “feel” for the groove. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock music. Rolling Stone readers named him the “best drummer of all time” in 2011. Many rock drummers were influenced by John Bonham’s work with Led Zeppelin. A few of them include Alex Van Halen (Van Halen), Joey Kramer (Aerosmith), Lee Kerslake (Uriah Heep, Ozzy Osbourne), Tony Thompson (Chic), Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe), Peter Criss (Kiss), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Fantômas) and Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine, Black Sabbath).

In number three is: Keith Moon

Keith John Moon was an English musician best known as the drummer of the English rock group the Who. He was noted for his unique drumming style and his eccentric, often self-destructive behaviour. In 2011, Moon was voted the second-greatest drummer in history by a Rolling Stone readers’ poll. Thirty-five years after his death, his drumming is still praised by critics and musicians. Moon’s style of drumming was considered unique by his bandmates, although they sometimes found his unconventional playing frustrating; Entwistle noted that he tended to play faster or slower according to his mood. “He wouldn’t play across his kit”, he later added. “He’d play zig-zag. That’s why he had two sets of tom-toms. He’d move his arms forward like a skier.” Daltrey said that Moon “just instinctively put drum rolls in places that other people would never have thought of putting them”. Contemporary critics questioned his ability to keep time, with biographer Tony Fletcher suggesting that the timing on Tommy was “all over the place”. Who producer Jon Astley said, “You didn’t think he was keeping time, but he was”.

In number 4 is: Dave Grohl

Grohl is best known for his work in the band Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. He has a very unique style of play, often associated with hitting hard. He has performed session work (as a drummer) for a variety of musicians, including Garbage, Killing Joke, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, The Prodigy, Slash, Iggy Pop, Juliette Lewis, Tenacious D, RDGLDGRN, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Lemmy, Stevie Nicks, Zac Brown Band and Ghost.

In number five is: Chad Smith

As one of the most highly sought-after drummers, Smith has recorded with Deep Purple vocalist Glenn Hughes, Kid Rock, Jake Bugg, The Dixie Chicks, Jennifer Nettles, Johnny Cash, John Fogerty and The Avett Brothers, to name a few.

While growing up, Chad Smith’s love for music was fostered by his brother Brad. Through his record collection, Brad introduced Chad Smith to big rock acts like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Queen, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. The drumming of guys like John Bonham, Keith Moon, Roger Taylor, Nick Mason, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Bill Ward and Ian Paice seeped into Chad Smith’s subconscious as he listened to his favorite artists and played along to their records. Chad Smith couldn’t play like those big names of rock drumming, but he got a lot of enjoyment and inspiration from their music.

In number 6 is: Mike Portnoy

Mike Portnoy was a founding and key member of progressive rock titans Dream Theater from the mid-80s to 2010, writing many of their lyrics and concepts. To many prog fans, he’s a beacon of musicianship, and it’s true that his precision through so many different styles and tempo changes are something to marvel at.

the April 2001 edition of Modern Drummer & Mike Portnoy’s website, he names Neil Peart, Buddy Rich, Frank Zappa, Vinnie Paul, Carl Palmer, Bill Bruford, Terry Bozzio, Nicko McBrain, Billy Cobham, Alan White, Nick Mason, Stewart Copeland, Phil Collins, Chester Thompson, Simon Phillips, Nick D’Virgilio, Andy Sturmer, Dave Lombardo, Tommy Ramone, Marky Ramone, Jon Fishman, Vinnie Colaiuta, Ringo Starr, Peter Criss, John Bonham, Keith Moon and Lars Ulrich as influences.

In number 7 is: Shannon Leto

Some of Shannon’s favorite drummers include John Bonham, Roger Taylor, Dan Lamirand, Stewart Copeland, Keith Moon, Nick Mason, and Lars Ulrich, all of whom he notes as influencing his own playing style.

With the band, he practices six to seven hours a day. In an interview with Modern Drummer magazine in February 2006, he stated: “Rehearsing that much has helped to build up my stamina and make my playing more precise”. He has also said that he doesn’t like playing to tape or to a loop, and prefers the more organic way of doing things, experimenting with electronics the band creates on their own.

Bob Ezrin, who helped produce Thirty Seconds to Mars’s debut self-titled album, referred to Leto as “one of the most inventive drummers I’ve worked with. He isn’t satisfied with simply adding a beat; his drum parts are an integral part of the orchestration of the record. He’s also a great live drummer who is lots of fun to watch, with a presence and energy level that are mesmerizing”.

In number eight is: Buddy Rich

Bernard “Buddy” Rich (September 30, 1917 – April 2, 1987) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. Rich was billed as “the world’s greatest drummer”and was known for his virtuoso technique, power, groove, and speed.Rich’s technique, including speed and smooth execution, has been one of the most standardized and coveted in drumming. While Rich typically held his sticks using the traditional grip, he could also play using the matched grip. One of his party tricks was to cross over his arms while drumming, often to loud cheers from the audience. Another technique he used to impress during his performances was the stick-trick – a fast roll performed by slapping two drumsticks together in a circular motion.

In the number 9 spot is: James “The Reverend” Sullivan

Jimmy died in 2009 after accidentally overdosing on prescription drugs, but his legacy lives on. Raised on a diet of metal and progressive rock, the Rev made his name as a multi-talented songwriter for Avenged Sevenfold. He received his first pair of drum sticks at the age of four and own drum set at the age of ten. At the age of eighteen he recorded his first album with Avenged Sevenfold titled Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. His early influences included Frank Zappa and King Crimson. The Rev said in a Modern Drummer Magazine interview that “I was raised on that stuff as much as rock and metal.”

In the number 10 spot is: Ringo Starr

When the Beatles formed in 1960, Starr was a member of another Liverpool group, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. After achieving moderate success with them in the UK and Hamburg, he quit the Hurricanes and joined the Beatles in August 1962, replacing Pete Best. Starr’s creative contribution to music has received praise from drummers such as Phil Collins and Steve Smith, who commented: “Before Ringo, drum stars were measured by their soloing ability and virtuosity. Ringo’s popularity brought forth a new paradigm … we started to see the drummer as an equal participant in the compositional aspect … His parts are so signature to the songs that you can listen to a Ringo drum part without the rest of the music and still identify the song.” In 2011, Rolling Stone readers named Starr the fifth-greatest drummer of all time.

Ringo Starr was far from a flashy drummer, and he saved his only drum solo in The Beatles for the last song on their final album. But even with a low-key profile, Ringo was an integral part of The Beatles. Not only did his inventive, offbeat drumming help give The Beatles a unique sound, but he fulfilled other band roles.
