You Guys! I Did a Race! (Sort Of)
My dad decided to start walking a few months ago in order to shrink his beer belly and get a little healthier. I was so proud of him!! He came to my sister and I with the idea of doing a 10k and I just couldn't say no. We signed up for the Rock N Roll Las Vegas "half of the half" and started to train.
And by train, I mean, I hardly did anything other than my usual SoulCycle and walking the dog. Whoops. I was a little nervous about this race but it ended up being a blast!
It wasn't really a race at all. My sister was almost 9 months pregnant, and my father is 68 years old, so we decided to walk the whole thing.
Standard RNR expo photo.
I decided I needed the BRIGHTEST SHIRT EVER. Also, those tights! I am obsessed. I wish I could wear them every single day.
PS. It was freezing. Like, legit freezing. I had gloves but decided not to wear them, which was a major mistake. My hands were numb by the time we finished.
The pre-race area was awesome. They had lots of water, bananas and other snacks available, and it wasn't crowded at all. Plus, Macklemore played! I only got to watch one song since the 10k started early, but it was still really cool.
The half of the half wasn't very crowded... we were in the last corral and it was like the 9th or 10th one. There weren't too many walkers either. We were basically on our own the whole time.
The emptiest I have ever seen the strip.
We had a pretty good pace, but good god was it boring. There was hardly any entertainment on the course (we were on the same first 10k as the half), no crowd support, and really nothing to look at. It wasn't so bad when were were walking by all the hotels and what not, but towards the end of Las Vegas Blvd, things get super seedy. I didn't really feel too safe walking out there in the dark with no volunteers around or anything.
Getting to hang out with my dad and sister for 2 hours made up for the cold and the boring course. We talked the whole time.
We finished! After almost getting lost on the last stretch. There was absolutely no signage where the 10k split from the half. That was rude. Luckily, we found the right street and made it safely to the (dakr) finish line.
And we found beer,of course.
And tacos!
Obviously it wasn't a fast race with a PR, but it was so cool to finish with my dad and sister! Hopefully we get a chance to do another race together soon!
