SIXES Ignite The Final Countdown With ‘Fogbreather’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Elizabeth Gore (D&S California)
“Fogbreather” being SIXES’ third single release for their debut full-length album Methistopheles is definitely the tune to rock the masses. There’s something so wickedly demented in their sludge, and this final single does not hold back by any means. The character of Mephistopheles flying on this cover with blackened wings over unsuspecting town is the precise image that develops in my mind from the opening lines. At this point is where I noticed the original lithograph from French artist, Eugène Delacroix, was now modified to include the demon smoking a meth pipe—it all comes full circle, in the cheekiest of ways.
Like Electric Wizard using scenes from various Anton LaVey films to evoke the intended mood for live experiences, ‘Fogbreather’ drags the listener back into the silent films at the beginning of the 20th century. SIXES compositions conjure the most disturbing scenes from Häxan (1922) and L’Inferno (1911).
Many of the scenes from these films are bathed in hot colors, or vignetting shadows crawling their way to your psyche, and with “Fogbreather” there is a saturation of sound and inescapable inebriation. Cummings’ wails at the four minute mark, is where I personally felt as though I was, in a morbidly but gleeful way, falling down a pitch-black spiral staircase, as the style of the song is Minimalist in nature.
“Fogbreather” is a doom anthem spawned by SIXES’ main credo, “Worship amps, not gods.” I could see this as their closing song with all fellow doomers and stoners headbanging in sync, fists raised to the air, the crowd singing back the lyrics with a firm belief in the message held within their eyes.
Methistopheles officially debuts March 1st through Black Bow Records.

The Wednesday Sludge: SIXES Unleash Debut Single “A Cross To Burn”
Every week, Nic Huber will dissect the heavy riffs of bands — new and old — in The Wednesday Sludge. This week’s band is a California doom outfit that know a thing or two about sludge. It makes sense that one of the colder winters in California history would help produce an aggressively…

SIXES Blazes Over The Catechism With Exclusive New Single, ‘A Cross To Burn’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Elizabeth Gore (D&S California)
We’ve a new contender roaring through California, and through sinister whispers have been given a name, SIXES. Formed in 2016, SIXES diligently made their way from the backyard underground, quickly began building their fan base, and were able to record their upcoming debut full length album at 13 O’Clock Studios (Arrowbear, CA). However, D&S will first bring to you, their first single, ‘A Cross To Burn,’ ferocious and harshly majestic in its approach.
If I could describe SIXES in one word, it’d be “Grindhouse.” Not because their craft is shabby, but because the approach to their core focus, even in this day and age, is taboo, violent, abrasive. Let us proceed…
A barrage of vibrating distortion rumbles from Bogacs like a Challenger capriciously speeding along the highway. The listener is met with a slow sustain, oscillating the introduction of the guitar works. Estrada’s strikes to the ride and toms are weighed, with new incoming strokes from Cummings. The reckless, deliberate slips and dive bombs lead us right into the fractious fanfare of slow triad minor arpeggios, to introduce the main, tonnage of the lurid. The meat of their message finally grasps as Cummings blitzes in as a belligerent lecturer, and behind his voice, I hear no fear or confusion.
SIXES have not lost their sanity, but merely societal and indoctrinated pantheonic regulations have been completely dismissed. Reddis chimes in to catch the butchering speed of the guitar with her hammer-ons. From here, affected and uncomfortable listeners would hear nothing short of a massacre, and attack on conformist values.
SIXES speaks to all of our pain for acceptance. We do not need the crutch of an omniscient being; yet many cling to it. SIXES captures the point of what could frighten many: The devil has transformed, and we must destroy that which distorts our free will.
Within the coda of ‘A Cross To Burn,’ all anguish escapes from the band. They do not repent, but do judge the listener. A recapitulation of the introduction ends SIXES debut, and rings out a signal of schismatic nihilism.
SIXES have given us a taste that our own day of reckoning is a long time come.
Thy will be done.
Pay heed….
You can witness the seething and grim compositions of Sixes firsthand as they open for Conan (AUS) and North (USA) on their Revengeance Tour 2017 in Glendale, CA on 5-10-17.
