not staring down at the image in your wallet
and wondering who that is,
reading a name that makes you cringe
and handing it to the bartender, cashier, clinician
evading inquisitive looks, just waiting to be handed your drink, bag, bottle
not feeling coerced by a notarized piece of paper,
by dichotomous and arbitrary meanings assigned
to colours and toys and clothing
and behaviours and ideas and actions
in the first and only outfit you put on for the day
never regretting the friction of the selected layers
never tugging at the misshapen, haphazardly hanging articles
getting letters, bills, junk in the mail
and knowing it belongs to you
opening the envelope without concern
that the contents aren’t meant for a different person
and the message inside isn’t tainted by the mailing address on the front
having harmless interactions, introductions, encounters
without being addressed as someone else
wondering who that leaves you as
if you’re who you are, but you’re always called otherwise
and internalizing if you’re anyone at all
not having to grin through others’ learning curves
and bear the stuttering hhhs and sshhs and thhs
that seldom stick the landing
with the correct bookend of -er, -e, -ey
but the stampede of apologies funnels out with no hesitation
in front of dueling double doors
debating the severity of your basic needs
compounded by looming legislative loopholes
and a perpetually missing door number three
to have a clock in, duck out career
procedurally smitten within cubicle walls
orchestrating good intentions through non-confrontational keyboards
cognizant of no other else’s confines
besides the one you feel has been placed on your microaggressive mouth
to have meaningless, untethered, reckless relationships
that don’t have propensity for ending in
blocked numbers, reported accounts, on the spot deal breakers,
next day news headlines, short-lived social media sensations,
outbursts of violence excused and protected as panic, and don’t forget — death
not feeling compelled to teach others
how to treat you, how to call you
how to make room for you, affirm you
how to embrace you, uplift you
how to see you, how to love you
entering the world everyday
with a stride that could never be put on trial,
with a gait that could never be called to question,
with a voice that’s the correct octave, the purest undoctored timbre
that isn’t played on repeat for the next non-profit tithe plate
just for you to be scooped up among the other tokens
and tossed toward a cause that doesn’t even use the same currency,
that could never properly spend you, but always manages to expend you,
with a confidence that the earth will continue to contain you
with a certainty that your steps will meet pathways readily placed before you
with a disregard for gated gray areas that will never impede your personhood
the pumping of an impatient knee
the drumming of antagonized fingers
the heaving of ritually wrapped shoulders
the bellows of exasperated sighs
the tittering of tongue pops and teeth tsks
an unraveling symphony of warning signs
that your barometer arm is reaching perilous pressure
as you’re enveloped in an onslaught of insistence
next time, that it will get better
incrementally, that change
learns at their own pace,
