Ntokozo SomethingElse Sithole. Another bearded black brother who loves to smell good and look good. We had an online chat with him about being a “Gentleman” as we define it. It is all about The Hustle. The Fashion/Style. The Lifestyle. And about The Gentlemen Himself. . .
And Here Is What He Had To Say. . .
In your own words, what is a “Gentleman”?
While this may not be my quote and forget where I read this it stuck with me: A gentleman is a fighter for a cause of right with words and not guns.
ABOUT THE GENTLEMAN HIMSELF.
Define yourself in 3 words.
Shy, Determined, Authentic
How do you define Art?
There’s many ways to define art. Like a quote from Thomas Merton - “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” I feel it’s all about discovery and being interesting. For example we can all take beautiful images but what makes an image interesting?
What is Love?
An intangible connection between two people that feels exceptionally good.
What is the difference between Life and Love?
Life is a giant canvas while, Love is/are the colours you use [Laughs]

What is the inspiration behind your hustle?
I love digital marketing and I’m really intrigued by the many ways you could express your ideas using digital platforms
ABOUT HIS STYLE/FASHION SENSE.
In your own words, what is the difference between Fashion and Style?
I’d describe it this way. Fashion is the tangible piece of clothing that is designed. Style is a distinctive way of interpreting what you have.
Tell us more about your sense of clothing or dressing up.
I dress how I feel. I’m usually dressed in denim with a simple t-shirt and boots or Chuck Taylors. I love Raw denim which I can characterize in my own way. Denim shows how a person wears their jean and that’s something I admire. I pair my jeans with good shoes.
What or who is the inspiration behind your fashion/style?
It all started in 2011 with my brothers, Karabo Mashishi and Tshepo Mogorosi. We were very much into personal style and grooming. We then went on to research and sort of find ourselves. Each of us expresses ourselves uniquely but it’s the bond and brotherhood that we have.
Name one clothing item that you advise every “Gentlemen” out there to have in their closet/wardrobe.
So much pressure!!! [Laughs] I can’t speak for all men, but I’ll leave you with this. Find a good pair Raw jeans. Wear the fuck out of them. Denim is timeless, every man should have a pair in his closet.
What is that one accessory you can’t live without?
My boots
What is your favourite store?
G STAR
Adidas
Camper Shoes
Brooklyn We Go Hard

Besides being at work or spending time with your family, what do you usually do during your spare time? To be honest there’s nothing like spending time with my son, Wandile. I also like strolling around my hood (camera in hand). Taking pictures is something.
How do you define your taste in music?
I’m a big fan of broken beats. I listen to a wide range of music and we could talk all day about music.

We had an online chat with him about being a “Gentleman” as SIYA SULA defines it, it’s about The Hustle. The Fashion/Style. The Lifestyle. And The Gentleman Himself.
Here is what he had to say about being a “Gentleman”.

In your own words, what is the difference between Fashion and Style?
Fashion is what we call “TRENDS” they are all over on both below and above media. Almost everyone wants to be part of what is HOT or IN on the streets of fashion or “looking cool”. And style is about being you, creating and defining your own dress sense which will make the other person to think twice about stealing it.
Tell us more about your sense of clothing or dressing up.
It is all in the name of being “Comfortable”. Anything I feel comfortable in, I rock it and definitely look good in it. My fashion sense it is mainly influenced by the street culture and street style of hip hop. Not forgetting to be simple but LOOK GOOD [Laughs]

My fashion icon is definitely Yasiin Bey also known as “Mos Def” and my brother Ivan Bafana.

SIYA SULA, Presents “The Art We Wear” with Originally Kasified Clothing. . .
“Originally Kasified Clothing” is a durable gear from the urban streets of Johannesburg, situated in Soweto. Providing a stylish and comfortable look for both our current and future consumers. Originally Kasified Clothing is a brand that is focused both on traditional and street wear. Our concepts are inspired by Afrikan elements, from culture to religion, to arts and craft.
Why go to the store when there are some super talented local and original clothing/fashion designer just around the corner? Here, we have “Originally Kasified Clothing” the two designers from Soweto, they are not just “eye-candies” and all those yummy stuff but they create magic with fabric. Muzi “Afrika” Mabena and Loyiso “Neguste” Dyantyi don’t have just a business relationship, they are friends and most importantly there is brotherhood in their relation also they share a common goal to make it big with their brand “Originally Kasified Clothing”. We had an online chat about fashion, style and a sneak about their brand “Originally Kasified Clothing”
Muzi “Afrika” Mabena [Left] and Loyiso “Neguste” Dyantyi [Right]
What is fashion and what is style for a clothing designer like you guys?
Fashion is a story, and style is how you tell that story, a feeling of expression. Fashion and style are means of telling a story through your attire, or an outfit for that matter. The style you have says a lot about your character.
Is clothing design art or creativity?
We believe design art is a creation itself; we just have different ways of putting it. As a designer you get to sketch your piece before bringing a final product to life, in this process, already it comes as one, a creative design art.
Every designer is striving to be different in the fashion industry, what makes you and your brand different from other fashion brands?
The faith that we have in our brand, creates passion, the more faith we have in our brand, the more passionate we get. We get the sense of uniqueness from the passion we have. We don’t try too hard, everything we touch just turns to magik. It’s natural.
Have you and your brand set a trend? If yes, what trend is it?
Personally, We find it hard to describe my style because it changes from time to time, and in all that, new elements are being added to it daily. So it becomes more complicated to describe it. In any case, I believe we have set a trend. A Kasified trend. An Afrikan street wear trend. A trend that allows you to be yourself and not worry about what other people might say because of what you’re wearing.
What makes a trend?
Uniqueness makes a trend. Bringing something new to the culture, and the respond that you get from the masses, brings change to their lifestyle.
What makes a Clothing Designer?
Understanding the principles and elements of design, and being able to create something from the little knowledge that you have. That’s what we believe makes a designer.
Name three brands you’d like to compare your brand to.
We compare our brand to Originally Kasified Clothing only. We believe that if you compare yourself to someone, then you’re creating a drive to compete, which is not healthy. You can’t grow in trying to compete with others. Here, at Kasified, we run our own race, at our own pace.
We look up to a few brands, brands that inspire us to keep doing what we do best. We’ve got AfrikanSwiss, which I refer to as the masters of denim, and because we also work with denim mostly, we’re learning a lot from AfrikanSwiss. On the other hand we’ve got Bathini Designs, heavy on the Afrikan prints, which give us courage to embrace our culture through what we do.
What’s your best design you’ve ever made, and why is it your best?
I can’t really choose from our collections. We’ve been making the best designs ever since we started.
What are the pros and cons of a clothing designer?
Personally, I have a lot of fun in this career. Getting to participate in markets, fashion shows, and just getting to meet new people. You get paid doing something everyone admires, and the most beautiful thing is that you get to see other people wearing your art. It’s priceless! Those are the “pros” of a clothing designer.
As for the “cons”, you have to understand fashion and style, the elements and principles of design, which is a constant battle. You have to be constantly creative. What happens when you run out of creativity? The brand falls, and you don’t want that. So you have to be imaginative and innovative in everything that you do.
Any motivation or inspiring words for that young aspiring clothing designer who wants to be in your shoes.
We, we are just being ourselves in everything that we do. We are art. We are fashion. Don’t try too hard to be unique in order to fit in. In actual fact, don’t try to fit in, do you!
It is always advisable to do research so that you have an idea of the kind of venture you’re tapping into. So be like Afrika, and do you.

“Dear Gentlemen”
SIYA SULA Definition of a “Gentleman”
We all hear the same story or definition of a “Gentleman”, which defines a “Gentleman” as someone who is good with his family, someone who is a good breed or hold a good social position. We don’t disagree with that, we totally agree but as SIYA SULA we have our own definition of a “Gentleman”.
We are looking at just few aspect that sums up the definition of a “Gentlemen”
First we are looking at his “Hustle”, he cannot be a yummy somebody with no hustle to brag about or to inspire those who look up to him and want to be in his shoes as they grow. There has to be something he is doing that wakes him up to have an early morning and makes him stay up all night setting goals and actions for his dreams to come true.
Secondly we are looking at his sense of “Style/Fashion”, how does he represent himself in terms of style and fashion sense. Where does his inspiration of looking so good every day comes from? We are now living in the world where every Monday women celebrate “Men Crush Monday”, and for one to make it to the celebration must be very good looking and very fashionable and make a good fashion statement where they grace people with their presence.
Thirdly we are looking at his “Lifestyle”, what he does for fun, where is his hangout spot. Where does a “Gentleman” hangout? The spots he usually spend his time at really defines him, and his choice of music defines the “Gentleman” he is. And what type of entertainment is he interested in.
And lastly, we are looking at “The Gentleman Himself”. Getting to know the “Gentleman” kinda makes it interesting for the ones following him, we don’t really need to know his dark secrets but to just know a sneak peak of himself. His know-hows of love, art, life and everything beautiful is what makes him to be a “Man Crush Monday”, or who knows? He might be a Life Time Crush for some.
There you have it, SIYA SULA defines a Gentleman with only four aspects.
The Hustle.
The Style and Fashion.
The Lifestyle.

- Media workers, journalists and independent writers who are members of the township organic funk movement, as well as those who will be covering the developments of the project.
- The provincial and international tourist market.
The past decade has been characterized by the growth of alternative entertainment formats previously unheard of in the Jozi scene, particularly when it comes to younger generation of entertainment consumers. Hip- hop, Organic Soul, Funky Jazz and Poetry have undoubtedly added an extra flavour in the entertainment diet of urban youth. Artists such as Khethi and Her Afro Twists, Brother Moves On, Ipande Core, Urban Village, The Fridge, The Muffinz Rebirth and Planet Lindela represent this new breed of young artists whose musical and lyrical expressions have redefined quality entertainment.
The energy that comes with such quality entertainment creates a vital space required to celebrate life beyond the stage. Such a phenomenon has managed to manifest itself in the growing demand for alternative entertainment for the upwardly mobile youth. We perceive this as an indication of not only maturity in young people’s preferences of entertainment, but also an indication of how critical cultural expressions are for the holistic development our society, including young people. It is in this light that we conceived the idea of utilizing such a space for the economic empowerment and skills exchange activities, by combining arts development and business elements in a form of HIS AND HERS JAM SESSIONS.
Tshidiso Setshogwe, he is one of the members of the collective His & Hers Jams, he was jamming to the sounds of Urban Village the band which was performing on the 29 November 2015.
Ntsane Lerato Lichaba, the guitarist and vocalist of the band Urban Village.
