SkillsUSA members from Bennington, Nebraska celebrated SkillsUSA week by giving back to the community with their “Give the Shirt Off Your Back” project. During the course of the campaign, students collected over 300 shirts to be donated to the Open Door Mission. Thank you to sponsors Larry Klaus and Tom Schumacher for their support! 

Bennington High School alumnus and CAD Engineer Andy Jizba returned to visit with chapter members and volunteer as a guest speaker during the SkillsUSA Week festivities.

This week’s featured SkillsUSA member: Nyree Adams, Pinellas Technical College, Florida. Nyree currently serves as the SkillsUSA Florida State Vice President. Why does Nyree love SkillsUSA?

“SkillsUSA has opened doors and new opportunities for me publicly and privately. One of the areas SkillsUSA has empowered me in is public speaking. I was never comfortable in front of people and I even enjoyed being in the background. It has also brought awareness of my people, delegating and time management skills.” 

“SkillsUSA leadership training and networking has allowed me to meet dignitaries and people of influence that support and advocate for skillsUSA. SkillsUSA has also granted me the opportunity to go before local and national businesses such as Home Depot, Penske Trucks and Achieva Credit Union to showcase my salesmanship skills and inform them about this wonderful organization. I am passionate, and honored to be the newly elected President of my local SkillsUSA chapter at Pinellas Technical College in St. Petersburg, FL and the Vice President of SkillsUSA Florida.” 

“One of the things that I live for every day is to serve others and encourage those around me to reach higher than the day before. We all have a purpose and a destiny and we cannot obtain it without the help of other people encouraging, coaching, and mentoring us.”

This week: Edgardo Correa

“William Shakespeare once said, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Life is like a stage, and it’s our duty as citizens to realize what we want to do with our stage. Personally I make my stage into the fashion runway by showcasing an immaculate red blazer, with my shoulders back, chest up, as I walk with a purpose; and I wasn’t able to find my purpose until I discovered SkillsUSA! However the question isn’t how has SkillsUSA changed me, but rather who was I before SkillsUSA?”

“Growing up as a first generation Mexican­-American life has been tough, but early on I realized challenges were meant to be overcome! From being hit with the epiphany that English was a requirement in grade school, to serving as a translator to both my parents and the hispanic community, to being the first in my family to surpass a high school education, to facing my critics; and by critics I mean stereotypes. It wasn’t until my freshman year of high school in which I was introduced to SkillsUSA because free donuts were offered at the first chapter meeting, and it was my glazed donut that has made all the difference!”

“Through SkillsUSA my advisor’s have pushed my limits. From teaching me how to conduct a crime scene investigation, to mentoring me through my high school experience, and later on pushing me to run for office. In one point of our lives we all somehow undergo a moment of failure. To this day I can still feel how I felt when I didn’t place in my competition, or when I was not announced as a district or state officer, but it’s what we do with our failures in which has made my journey through SkillsUSA completely spectacular. Today I can say I am a state champion in Forensic Science, and serve as the 2015­-2016 SkillsUSA National High School Parliamentarian! SkillsUSA has embedded in me strength and confidence, in which the color of my skin does not matter, but rather the content of my character.”

SkillsUSA WorldTeam heads to São Paulo, Brazil on Aug. 7 to participate in the 43rd WorldSkills Competition. Team members will test their skills against more than 1,200 students representing 73 countries and regions from around the world competing in 50 official skill competitions and one demonstration contest. There will be 5,000 international experts, delegates and judges, 3,000 volunteers and 200,000 student and public spectators attending.
