Still thinking about this. People who love each other but didnt work out. But are still there for each other. But still understand each other like no one else. But still care for each other. But still look at each other with love. But not lovers because it didnt work.
Especially if you think they dated around the end of highschool, when everything was still messy with adam. It didnt work out because of someone terrible that wasnt their faults, but it still didnt work out and it still changed them. The knowledge that it didnt work out is still there, stopping them from ever allowing anything romantic again. Kojiro showing a little bit of interest romantivally and kaoru firmly not wanting to repeat the past and risk losing kojiro. The idea of them being different now, so held back when they used to allow themselves to love each other much more freely.
