Week 4 Reflection

For this last week I decided to create some photo media pieces. To finish off the project I have taken two models and tested various techniques using Photoshop. For both models I have used the famous double exposure method to create interesting and aesthetic photographs. I really like how they have worked out and I would defiantly explore this technique again. For my 3rd piece I decided to create a glitched effect on the photograph, relating back to my animation from the 2nd week. I really like how this worked out, it has given the photograph a surreal as well as edgy vibe, and the process surprisingly didn’t take as long as expected. For my last piece I did a collage of flowers surrounding my models face. The image is monochrome with purplish hue, which allowed me to increase the contrast, exaggerating the different tones in the photograph without having to worry about losing detail. I enjoyed creating this piece as it took me out of my comfort zone as an artist. I do believe that with more time I could have perfected my last piece as it isn’t as neat and slick as I wanted it to be. Though I’m glad I created it, as it gave me the chance to leave my comfort zone which was a good way to complete my project.

Week 3 Reflection

For my third week I focused a lot of my attention upon my theory work, as well the last elemental character, air. I really enjoyed painting the air elements hair that resemble a cloud, and love how it gives off airy and soft feeling, in juxtaposition to the tones of strength that are also seen within the character. When finally getting to the end of the elemental series It was nice to see all the pieces together side by side, moreover I can defiantly say that the water element would have to be my least favourite . I used a lot of this week to finish gathering my information for my artist reports. I really did enjoy fleshing out these reports and writing about who I am inspired by, as it helped me figure out the style and concepts for my last few digital works.

Artist 3 - Malgorzata Kmiec

Malgorzata Kmiec is a freelance artist based in Berlin, she is known for creating colourful and stylized portraits. The artist believes that people who believe magic does not exist have never heard or experienced true art, and due to this Kmiec as an artist aims to illuminate tones or magic and beauty into her artwork.   

She has been involved in varies projects mainly revolving around the gaming industry. Kmiec worked full time for a game studio, where she gained a lot of her experience and skills as a 2D artist, fabricating cover art for games and character designs. Since then Kmiec has moved onto freelance, using her ability to draw in different styles to deliver the best art for each project. As of late she has begun exploring the 3D art world, including modelling and texturing. 

“I’m often inspired by seasons and nature, and this painting is a tribute to early spring… I wanted to surround my character with warm colours that reflect the spirit of the season.” Kmiec has said about her portrait titled ‘Spring Spirit’. Within this piece Kmiec uses vibrate colours and lighting to fabricate tones of beauty, nature and mystic.   

Similarly, to Mikiko Ponczeck, Kmiec’s painting application (especially of the hair) is soft yet also structured, which is a style I desire to implement into the digital portraits. I am inspired by Kmiec’s stylised digital paintings and have over the years developed a similar style that sits between realism and cartoon, and I hope to illuminate my style within my project, to convey my uniqueness as an artist.

Artist 2 - Rosa Menkman

Rosa Menkman (April 3rd 1983) is a Dutch art theorist, curator and visual artist that focuses her attention on glitch art and resolution theory. She is also known for investigating video compression, feedback and glitches in order to create works of art.

In 2011 she published Network Notebook # 04: The Glitch Moment(um). The book takes information theory to propose an understanding of “glitch art” as a genre of contemporary art. Menkman commented on this genre of art saying that, “Glitch art practices invested in processes of non-conforming, ambiguous reformations”.

The artist dominates in the genre of glitch art, she also mines software glitches to incorporate into her time-based works. She sees the Net Art Collective JODI to be a major influence on her work, along with general experimentation. Work in which experimentation lead to work would include her piece called, “The Collapse of PAL” (2011), which encases a short surreal and eerie video. Menkman also organizes a glitch art festival named GLI.TC/H, an event where glitch art is explored and celebrated.

As can be seen in plate 2 (Photo) Menkman has created interest and an eerie tone via digital manipulation, taking an ordinary photograph and fabricating a glitched and surreal photograph. As a digital photographer I often manipulate and add different effects to my photographs in Photoshop, in order to create certain moods or convey different concepts. Within my project I would like to adopt this glitch effect seen throughout Menkman’s work, though I also want to experiment with double exposures with my varying portraits.

Artist 1 - Mikiko Ponczeck (Miki)

Mikiko Ponczeck , also known as Miki by her followers (born February 2nd 1984 in Tokyo) is a German – Japanese comic book, manga, game, and digital artist, whom is currently living in London. It was in 2007 that she published under her original handle Zombiesimile, her first graphic novel Lost & Found, along with an artbook. The indie publisher that helped publish Miki’s work “The Side Wall”, eventually hired her for a few years to work as a graphic designer. During this time, she learnt graphic design for packaging and lettering, and further built on her skills as a digital artist. Within the past years she has created cover art for Nintendo (2015 &2016), for the EU release of Fossil Fighters: Frontier and Teddy Together.

In terms of techniques and style Miki’s work inspires most of my digital portraiture. As a digital artist who is thoroughly interested in character design and creating content for video games, Miki has always been a big influence within my work. The aspects of her art that I often adopt for my projects, would be her use her line art, rich colors, and her use of different expressions.

In plate one (Titled: Tova Portrait) Miki’s use of colour creates a relaxing, flowing and aesthetic tone within her work, I have adopted these tones through my use of color pallets, which can be seen in my ‘Elemental Series”. Miki’s technique when digitally painting hair creates a soft yet also structured appearance something I have tried to adopt within my own work, which can be seen in my series of portraits.

Week 2 Reflection

For week two I firstly stepped away from my elemental series and decided to try something new. For my 3rd piece I decided I would animate a blinking eye, this is my first time ever animating, so the process (which I posted below) was very alien. Firstly, I used Photoshop to draw and animate the blinking eye, I then moved onto the website GIPHY. I was inspired to use GIPHY due to the the book ‘1984′ by George Orwell, hence the subtitle that can be seen on my eye GIF (’I can see you’). With this online software I was able to make this ordinary looking eye look unnerving, surreal and eerie. I enjoyed experimenting with the different glitch effects and text within this online software, to create this ‘1984′ & ‘Big Brother’ appearance within my work. As an artist I know how to create these effects in Photoshop already, though I desired to test the website and was pleasantly surprised with the quality GIF it produced. This week I also finished my 3rd elemental character. I decided to give fire elemental character a pixie cut, giving her a fierce appearance while also keeping her feminine, contrasting the cliché brute design that artists often link with this element. I really love how the hair worked out; the illuminating look creates a soft yet also an eye-popping tone. After experimenting with how to edit my animation, I went to GIPHY and decided to go for a glitched retro look. I have used the line “I can see you”, due to inspiration from the novel ‘1984′ by George Orwell. I hope you all enjoy, I will post this to Instagram later next week. ^^ ❤❤❤

Week 1 Reflection

For the first week I decided that my theme was portraiture, I will be doing a series of digital drawings (with some animation), as well as photography with graphic manipulation. I found my inspiration from these simple elemental vector drawings I found online. This week I have started my elements series, starting with earth, using digital drawing as my median and the program Photoshop.  I am quite happy with how the piece turned out, it didn’t take too long, and I love the colour scheme. I have noticed improvement in my colouring and choice of colours since using my Wacom last. This week I also completed the second elemental character, water. I like how this turned out though I am not as satisfied with the results when compared to my first piece. I may come back to this piece later to possibly improve it.
