Not What I Expected
Howard stood slouched against the door frame, having just thrown Old Gregg out. It figured. The one girl that seemed interested, that he had got into his bedroom, that he had a shot with… he should have known it was too good to be true. He started walking slowly down the hall, back to the party. He ignored the stares from all the dancing electro girls and boys, the whispered insults as he passed, and headed straight for the kitchen counter where all the alcohol was set out. He grabbed an unopened bottle of whiskey and found his way to a chair in the corner of the room. He spent the next half hour drinking straight from the bottle, hoping to drink away the memory of what a disaster the night had been.
Vince was dancing on the table with one of his trendy, androgynous friends when he saw Howards across the room, drinking and looking absolutely miserable. He felt a sudden pang of guilt, partly for throwing the party in the first place when he knew it wasn’t Howard’s idea of fun on his birthday. Partly for what had happened on the roof. He excused himself, and jumped down off the table, weaving through the party-goers until he reached Howard.
“Hey, Howard, are you okay?” Vince put a hand on his friend’s shoulder, half as a nice gesture and half to keep himself from falling over.
“No, I’m bloody well not okay.” He slurred, looking up at Vince. “You throw this fucking party, ruin my fucking birthday, the one girl I thought I had a chance with turns out to be…not what I expected…”
“Aw, Howard, come on. I’m sorry about the party and, you know…the roof and everything…what happened with the girl?” He looked questioningly down at Howard.
“She just…turned out to be someone else…”
Vince scrunched up his nose. Trying to actually process thoughts in his drunken state was a challenge, indeed. “You mean like, she was her own twin or something? Or…”
Howard had no patience for Vince’s guessing. “She was Old Gregg in a disguise!” he snapped bitterly.
For a moment, Vince just looked blankly at Howard. Once the information finally hit him, he burst into giggles. “Old Gregg? That fish-man with the vagina?”
“It’s not funny!” Howard took another swig of whiskey.
Vince stopped giggling, feeling another pang of guilt, more intense this time. He wanted to cheer Howard up. In his hazy drunken mind, the only logical way he could think of to do this was, of course, sex. Yes, that was it. He would have sex with Howard.
“What the fuck are you doing? Don’t touch me!” Vince had sat himself down on Howard’s lap. Ignoring his friend’s protests, he leaned in to whisper in Howard’s ear.
“Howard, ‘M gonna make this up to you. Bedroom. Now.” He stood up, taking Howard’s hand and pulling him in the direction of their shared bedroom.
Too drunk to protest, Howard allowed himself to be led across the room and down the hall. Once they reached the bedroom, Vince shut the door and pushed Howard up against it, kissing him. It was different than the kiss on the roof, Vince not hesitating to slip his tongue into Howard’s mouth, hands roaming all over Howard’s body.
Howard knew he should just push Vince away and put an end to this. He knew that to Vince, this was just sex, nothing more. But for some reason, he just let it happen. He would later blame the alcohol, but if he was honest with himself, it was more than that. He wanted Vince. He could feel himself getting hard already, so he just kissed back as best as he could, grabbing Vince by the arse and pulling his body closer.
Feeling Howard respond to the kiss, Vince slid his hands up under Howard`s shirt. He ran his fingers teasingly over Howard`s nipples, causing the older man to moan into his mouth and grip his arse tighter. He kissed and licked a trail along Howard`s jaw, pausing to speak with his lips brushing lightly against Howard’s skin.
"I want you to fuck me."
Howard closed his eyes and shivered at the words, whispered against his neck. When he opened them he saw that Vince had pulled away and was hurriedly taking off his clothes. Howard did the same and before he had fully registered what was happening, he was on his back on Vince’s bed, the smaller man on top of him, kissing and licking a trail along his collarbone, up his neck, then meeting his lips in a messy kiss. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Vince fishing something out of the top drawer of his bedside table, his eyes growing wide when it registered what it was, and that this was really going to happen.
Vince sensed how drunk Howard was, and opted out on letting Howard do the honours or preparing him. “Gonna get m’self ready for you, Howard.” The image of Vince on top of him, stretching himself, head tipped back, little noises of pleasure spilling from his lips, turned Howard on more than he could ever have imagined. Before long, Vince placed his hands on Howard’s chest, bracing himself as he slowly lowered himself down onto Howard’s now painfully hard cock. Howard’s eyes slipped shut, the tight heat of Vince overwhelming him.
The alcohol made everything fuzzy, and as Vince slowly moved up and down, the world seemed to evaporate; all that mattered was the shocks of pleasure tingling through their bodies. Howard’s hips bucked up of their own accord, meeting Vince’s downward movements.
Vince could tell Howard was getting close. He’d expected it, knowing this was Howard’s first time. He took one hand off Howard’s chest, barely keeping his balance, and began stroking himself in time with his movement. The sight of Vince touching himself sent Howard over the edge, and his eyes squeezed shut as his world went white, digging his fingers into Vince’s skin so hard it was sure to bruise.
Howard woke up alone and naked in Vince’s bed. It took a few moments for him to remember how he’s ended up there, and as realization dawned, he sat up with a jolt. He immediately regretted that, as his head throbbed, bringing into focus his terrible hangover. As he sat there, trying to process the events, Vince walked into the room, clad only in his silk kimono, carrying two cups of tea. He offered one to Howard, who gratefully took it and sipped slowly.
“Congratulations, Howard! You’re officially no longer a virgin!”
Howard blushed at Vince’s words. “Yeah…well, that was…” he searched for the right words to describe what he was feeling, by was cut off.
“It was pretty good, yeah. I reckon you’ll be a right tiger once you build up your stamina a bit. You need to get out there, shag a few strangers, get some practice in. Maybe me and you can even hook up again sometime. Friends with benefits, yeah?”
Howard’s heart dropped, and it was that moment that he realized, to Vince, it had just been sex. Casual, meaningless sex. “Yeah…yeah, that’d be nice.” He muttered, putting his tea down on the nightstand and getting shakily to his feet. “I need a shower.” With that, he shuffled out of the room as quickly as he could, cursing himself for believing that maybe, just maybe, the sex had actually meant something to Vince too.
Comment 1: The angst, the sex, the absolute perfection of it all! What I really loved about this is that you didn't lull us in to a false sense of fluffiness of 'aw they're in love', you stayed true to their characters. The dialogue was written to perfection, catching Vince's accent and Howard's sharper choice of words. Brilliant!
Comment 2: This was really fantastic. I like Vince's sort of warped view of how to make Howard feel better and it's really awful when you're unsure at the end whether he meant it. It was very sexy indeed; and the dialogue - amazing!

“That party was actually pretty good Vince.” “Pretty good? It was genius! All those people on the bouncy castle, belting out party tunes? It was amazing, you have to admit it." Howard smiled at him from the opposite sofa. Vince would always be Vince, and today he was Grand Party Master. “Yeah,” Howard said, reminiscing. “Shame those girls didn’t stay though.” It's hadn't exactly ruined the evening, not having the girls stay - it had been a fun night. The bouncy castle had morphed into an inflatable mosh pit, but there was of course an inevitable injury that had made the party calm down and fizzle out. One thing was for sure though; it had definitely been a night to remember. Howard reflected back on the evening, and soon found himself wondering why on earth he had never enjoyed a party. For a moment he relaxed into the sofa, lost in the memories of his birthday. He was startled when Vince spoke up. “Well, I think your virginity might have freaked them out a bit.” Sure, there had been a smile in his voice, but the words stung. Vince glanced over at Howard to check whether he’d crossed the line. Howard’s baleful stare told him he had. “I actually thought it was Lester Corncrake’s head by the bins,” he replied in a steely tone. Silence played about the room. “Come on Howard,” Vince said, his tone softer than usual. “You know I was only joking.” “But it’s not funny, is it?” “Howard - ” “It’s alright for you Vince. Everyone loves you.” “Yeah, and people love you too Howard!” “No they don’t. You saw how everyone reacted when you came out at the party – they forgot about me." Howard hung his head as realisation of having no place on the social ladder and general lack of conventional charisma sprung into his mind. "No one cares.” And rightly so, he added as an afterthought. “I care, Howard.” “You’re only saying that because you have to.” Vince started to giggle, and Howard stared at him with incredulous eyes that soon turned accusing. “Are you laughing at me?” “No,” Vince replied, but his shaking shoulders gave him away. “We’re discussing one of my most personal flaws and you’re laughing at me?” “Alright -” “Alright what, Vince?” Howard’s voice grew more malicious. “You’re impossible, you know that? Sometimes I think you forget others have feelings too. I have feelings. Why can you never remember that?” “Cool your boots!” Vince finally managed to snatch a word in what was fast becoming a laborious conversation. “It’s just this talk is getting stupid. I can’t do deep conversations; I’m a blunt person.” There was an awkward pause. “You’ve made that clear,” was Howard’s eventual and bitter reply. Howard stared dejectedly down at the floor, and deliberately focused on studying the rug in extreme detail. Every flaw in the thread, every snag in the stitching echoed within himself. In that one instant, despite the physical closeness of his friend, Howard felt utterly alone. Both of them were completely silent for a moment. The differences between the two of them now hung in air, resonances of malevolent words floating on drafts around the flat. Vince bit down hard on his lip in frustration, then got up and crept over to Howard’s sofa. “Sorry Howard.” He said the words softly as he looked down into his lap. “You know I didn’t mean it.” There was still no response. Vince let his left hand wander to hover, then eventually rest on Howard’s knee. Both of their gazes drifted down to that hand for a second before looking back up to become fixated on the other pair. Howard was the first to break the contact. “I’ve had a good day today.” He examined the folds of flimsy material that were Vince's kaftan. “You’d better not ruin it for me.” Vince’s face drifted closer, near enough for them both to feel the shivering breath of the other. Howard turned his head and looked down at Vince’s hand again to watch the fingers start to lightly drum on his kneecap. “Or what?” was the response breathed into the side of Howard’s neck. Vince’s face was now inches away from Howard’s. He moved even closer and let his lips caress Howard’s jaw-line, barely touching the smooth skin he found there. “Or what?” he repeated, skimming the words off Howard’s cheekbone. “I … I don’t ...” The hand that wasn’t preoccupied with Howard’s leg swept up as Vince placed his finger on Howard’s chin to turn his face to look at his. “I don’t forget how people feel, Howard.” Vince whispered the phrase. Howard became lost in Vince’s eyes. “Prove it,” was the response Howard gave. The sentence was barely there, but they both heard it and knew what it meant. Vince dropped his gaze from Howard’s eyes, and moved the finger on his chin to lightly trace the outline of the lips opposite his own. Howard’s breathing grew more ragged. This was nothing like on the roof. This was different. Molten electricity flowed through him and radiated out as small tremors whenever Vince's hand breezed over his face. Vince’s finger met one corner of Howard’s lips, before he moved his whole hand to knot in Howard’s hair. He closed his eyes, and replaced the area his finger had gracefully traced around with his own lips. The kiss was so gentle; there was nothing to prove to anyone else, only to each other. Then mouths opened, breathing raced, tongues slid. Vince moved himself so that his legs were straddling Howard's hips. For both of them, this felt like home. Eventually the kiss slowed, as if Vince and Howard had finally melted together and gelled into one complete being. Corduroy and kaftan separated with heavy breaths. Howard smiled, and Vince buried his head in the side of his roll- neck jumper, against his chest. "I do care," he murmured into Howard's pulse.
Comment 1: Wow. Hot. You teased us with this, the perfect amount of description and dialogue. I love how you built it up and then BOOM, hot hot hot. Describing them both with 'corduroy and kaftan' was simply perfect, and you put a real visual effect on with that. I'd genuinely love to read more of this!
Comment 2: Oh, this was just lovely. I love how Howard got a bit more involved because usually in Howard/Vince, it's Vince doing all the work! Very sexy, very sweet and a lovely idea altogether. You're very good at building suspense and keeping us guessing! I loved it.
More Than This
You’ve got to stop falling for people when they give you the slightest bit of affection.
Howard stared at the dimly lit ceiling, idly fussing with the cuff buttons of his pyjamas. Surely this wasn’t true. Vince had been showing him affection for years, and Howard certainly hadn’t fallen for him. No sir.
Apart from that time when he had tripped over his shoelaces and faceplanted on the tarmac that fateful day at school when a little mousey-haired boy (whose pointy red boots were in clear violation of the dress code, but never mind that) had come up to him at lunch and said “All right, mate? My name’s Vince,” and he never did get up again, not really.
The party had turned out quite well, all things considered: everyone seemed to have a good time on the bouncy castle - and at one point, Vince’s hand brushed against Howard’s arm, but never mind that - and by the wee hours, the party was winding down and most of the guests had gone home; Vince was slow-dancing with that cute electro-girl to a Roxy music song, and Howard decided with a heavy sigh that it was time to make a nice cup of tea and retire to bed for the night.
It was not long after Howard had changed into his pyjamas, brushed his teeth, flossed, combed his moustache, changed into his bedtime socks, and tucked himself into bed with his warm cuppa, that Vince waltzed into the room, freefalling backwards into his mirrorball duvet.
“Damn good party, eh Howard?” he asked, rolling onto his tummy, and propping himself up on his elbows like a giddy teenaged girl.
“Yeah, it was,” agreed Howard. “Cheers, Little Man.”
“So,” grinned Vince, leaping up from his duvet and seating himself on the edge of Howard’s herringbone wool comforter, “how’d you get on with that girl?”
Howard cringed internally. This was not something he ever wished to revisit, ever, at all, ever.
“Yes, well, you know,” he stammered with all the faux-nonchalance he could muster (not much), “it wouldn’t have worked out anyway. I’ve got to spread my wings and soar, like a jazz eagle.”
Even if things hadn’t gone so pear-shaped with his “date” so soon, it gave Howard pause. It seemed as though he had always been under the implicit impression that he and Vince would one day meet nice girls and get married to them and have kids and all that, but any time that Howard ever pictured his future, all he could see was Vince. It had always been the two of them. He could not imagine any other way of living, nor did he wish to. The idea that this was not mutual (and if Vince swaying his hips with to Roxy flipping Music with some shiny girl was any indication, it wasn’t) made Howard’s heart sink like a tourist in quicksand.
“Sorry about that, Howard,” said Vince sympathetically, placing a hand on the bedspread. Howard wondered if Vince was aware that his leg was directly beneath the bit of bedspread that was directly beneath Vince’s hand. Howard blushed like 3569873969873563 3-litre economy bottles of Asda Dutch Merlot. “You’re too good for her. To be honest, I thought she looked well seedy.”
“Yep,” nodded Howard, “thanks for that, Little Man. How’d your, umm, lady friend get on... with you?"
“She seemed well keen,” beamed Vince. “Gave me her number and everything.”
Howard’s heart sank a few metres deeper. Vince produced a small slip of torn paper and handed it to him. The name “Denise” and a curiously long telephone number were scrawled in loopy, feminine handwriting. The number seemed familiar to Howard, though at first he could not identify why.
Then his eyes widened as it dawned on him. It was the number for Emergency Services. Perhaps this Denise was an ambulance driver, he thought, but even then, wouldn’t they give her her own mobile? It would be awfully silly to ring Emergency Services and have to ask if Denise was there. He looked back to Vince, who grinned at him with a cheeky wink, and chose to say nothing.
“So,” he said hesitantly, “do you think you’ll be asking her for a date?”
Vince let out a long, slow breath, staring at the ceiling.
“Probably not, really. Did you see the shoelaces she had on? Those should have been buried and forgotten back in the mid-nineties,” he said wistfully.
Neither of them had mentioned The Thing That Happened On The Roof since they tumbled into the bouncy castle together. Howard felt it safe to assume that Vince had forgotten about the incident altogether by now, and there was no point in revisiting it, if that were the case. Unspoken words and unfinished gestures hung in the air about them like weightless inflatable elephants.
“Listen, Howard, about what happened earlier, I just wanted to say -” Vince began. His hand was on Howard’s hand, now. Howard felt a flush of heat run through him, his pulse and mind racing. Vince was dangerously close. Just a little reach forward could close the gap, and - “no, it’s stupid. Never mind.”
Vince turned away, flinging off his sparkling, feathered cape as he shuffled back to his own bed and tucked himself in. Howard switched off the bedside lamp. His heart sank even further. He couldn’t leave it like that. He just couldn’t. He steeled himself as best he could, and spoke.
“Hey Little Man?” he whispered through the dark.
“Yeah?” replied Vince.
“Remember what I said about... breaking that boundary? You know, forever?” he asked.
“Yeah,” said Vince. “Why?”
Howard sighed. “Never mind,” he said, shaking his head. “Good night, Little Man.”
“Night, Howard,” said Vince.
When he said forever, Howard thought, he meant it. Forever’s a long time; he could wait for Vince.
Comment 1: I really love the humour of this, I read it in public and burst out in giggles. Adore the wording too, you really captured the character's dynamics in their friendship, which made it more believable/realistic. Really great fic here! I loved reading it!
Comment 2: This for me really encapsulates everything Howard/Vince is. It's funny, sweet and completely in character, as well as managing to be absolutely heartbreaking at the same time. Lovely use of dialogue and just a perfect ending. I loved how you made it so Vince didn't get the girl in the end, so him and Howard are sort of in the same boat even though Vince is blissfully unaware. Lovely stuff.
