Disco fever is taking us over at the space today!

One of the many generous contributions made to the South London Black Music Archive over the weekend. Linton Kwesi Johnson is a renowned reggae poet and recording artist. Linton was born in Jamaica and came to London in the early 1960's where he attended Tulse Hill secondary school and later Goldsmiths College in New Cross. In 1977 he became writer in residence for Lambeth and is apparently one of the only living poets to be published by Penguin.A true south London gem and valuable addition to the archive!

Happy Birthday Bob!

Happy Birthday Bob. I've heard many a south London story about Bob, from an elder man I met who was chatting to this young man in a pub in Brixton in the early 70's and many years later figured that the man he was speaking to was Bob Marley. Some one told me they remarkably got to interview him for their 6th form newspaper and another person told me they owned a rare tape of Bob playing and singing in Battersea Park where he used to hang out and play football. Fantastic stories worthy of archiving.

[notes] ok, i believe this is the one and only time that i will say that i don’t care that a song i post here didn’t feature on the dance charts. in my mind, this is a crossover song, and if you want to see all the details about chart positions and all, click here. i absolutely love this song. and it was used for the ending credits of the next karate kid. i live by it. i also think des’ree is so beautiful. the version i’ve put on here is the original version. it is, in my opinion, much better than the other (1999 remix) version floating out there…
