#Ammonite fossils can be found clustered together in the thousands, often in rock strata that was once part of an open ocean with little evidence of sea-floor dwelling life. This fact, coupled with the notion that #heteromorphAmmonites (species with irregular or asymmetrical shells) probably had difficulty swimming in a coordinated ways leads many to speculate that these animals spent their lives suspended in the water column feeding on plankton.

Throughout the #Mesozoic while these animals flourished, there were no large filter feeding vertebrates analogous to today’s baleen whales. Instead, great swarms of ammonites like this member of the genus #scaphites might have filled the seas; trapping krill, algae, and other planktonic organisms in their feathery arms.
