Art Etiquette, Tumblr, and You
Thereās a lot of awesome art on tumblr; itās fun to post, fun to share, and fun to look at! But behind every piece of art, thereās an artist, and most of the art on tumblr is posted by living, breathing human beings.Ā Most folks interacting with that art donāt mean to be rude or unkind, but because so much of the etiquette around art on tumblr is unspoken, sometimes accidental faux-pas happen.Ā
The intent of this post is to make a guide of sorts, based on common artistsā aggravations, irritations, and general woes, for tumblr users to interact with art & artists conscientiously!
REPOSTING, ART THEFT, AND RESPECTING THE ARTISTāS RIGHTS
The biggest and most obvious ādonātā on this list is reposting. Iāve talked before about why itās important for artists that people reblog, not repost. If you see a piece on another platform, look to see if the artist has a tumblr account. If a piece of art isnāt posted to tumblr, reach out to the artist for permission to post their work with credit. Artists can file DMCA takedowns against you for art theft, and are 100% within their rights to do so.
Please note that reposting hurts artists. A lot of popular artists have taken down their work and quit fandom due to constant art theft. If you like that artistās work, reposting is actively discouraging them from making more. More on this from artists.
If you reblog a post thatās a repost without meaning to, thatās okay; it happens to the best of us! Sometimes itās unclear whether or not the OP is the artist. If you find that youāve reblogged a repost, just delete the repost from your blog, and reblog the original instead.
Posting ānot mine, credit to the artistā is not credit. Crediting the artist by name, and linking to their accounts and commissions page, is giving credit. If youāre too lazy to look up the artist of a work, donāt post it.Ā
If you want to use an artistās work for an edit, icon, header, etc., reach out and ask permission.
If an artist refuses permission for you to repost a work; respect that choice! Artists may have good reasons for not posting their work to certain platforms, including the commercial viability of their work, and concerns about harassment ā but they donāt owe you an explanation. No means no.
If an artist reaches out to you and asks you not to use their work for any reason ā respect their request! Take it down, and donāt make a fuss or be a jerk about it. They have the right to dictate how the art they made is displayed and used.
NEVER DELETE THE ARTISTāS CAPTION. I donāt care if it doesnāt fit the āaestheticā of your blog, or itās too long, or any other excuse; consider the caption a part of the work.
