It had been a long, chaotic week at work, and by Friday night, you desperately needed a break. When your friend Phoebe texted asking if you wanted to grab drinks, you didn't hesitate to say yes.
Walking down the busy streets of NYC on June 13th was havoc with the final Knicks game being played on the side of buildings. You look at the clock on your phone. 10:56 p.m.
The bar was packed from wall to wall, every table filled and every screen tuned to the game. The energy inside was electric as fans cheered, argued over plays, and squeezed past one another carrying trays of drinks. Luckily, Phoebe had managed to grab a table before the crowd got too crazy. Drinks had already been ordered, and everyone was focused on the final moments of the game. Earlier in the night, Phoebe mentioned that her brother, David, was working sound for a concert at Madison Square Garden and that he and a few members of the crew might stop by afterward.
“Y/N, is it okay if my brother and his friends come to join us?” Phoebe asked.
The roar of the crowd drowned out her voice. You frowned and leaned closer. “What?”
“Is it okay if my brother and the crew come to join us?” she yelled.
You nodded. “Yeah, of course.”
Taking another sip of your Dirty Shirley, you turned your attention back to the screen. The final seconds ticked down, and the entire bar seemed to hold its breath. Then the buzzer sounded. The Knicks had won.
The room erupted instantly. People jumped to their feet, drinks were raised in celebration, and cheers echoed through the bar. Excited, you quickly turned to celebrate with Phoebe, but you moved too fast. Instead of finding your friend, you walked straight into someone.
Your hand jerked, sending the contents of your glass splashing forward.
“Oh my God.”
You looked up in horror to find a tall, tan guy standing in front of you. His blond curls fell loosely around his face, and his black T-shirt was now dripping with your Dirty Shirley. Bright red liquid soaked through the fabric as he looked down at the damage before slowly lifting his eyes to meet yours.
For a moment, you were too embarrassed to speak. Out of all the people in the crowded bar, your drink had somehow ended up all over him.
“Oh fuck, I’m sorry” you say in a panic state. You look for Phoebe and she is telling her brother and the rest of his friends to sit down. “Looks like Cal met his next problem” The other tall one said. You sit back down and everyone introduces themselves. “My name is Calum, I’m part of the band,” he said. You nod. “Tell me, what's your name”
Phoebe nudges you. You answer. “Y/N” “Well Y/N are you going to get me a drink or buy me a new shirt?” He says to you, flashing his smile at you. You think to yourself how attractive he is with glasses on his partially wet shirt. “I'll just get you a drink, I suppose," you tell Phoebe you're going to get a drink and signal Calum to follow you to the bar.
Pushing through the crowd, you grab Calum’s wrist so you don’t lose him. Once you reach the bar, you turn around and find him towering over you. Looking up, you ask what he wants to order.
“A Lemon Drop and a Dirty Shirley,” he tells the bartender.
You rest your foot on the chair's leg rail beside you and lean up to thank him. But gravity has other plans. Someone bumps into the chair, throwing you off balance and sending you closer to him.
His arm immediately wraps around your waist, steadying you. He feels warm and comforting. For a moment, neither of you moves. Then he leans back slightly, his eyes meeting yours as he takes a slow breath.
You look away and turn back toward the bar just as your drinks arrive. By now, the crowd has grown even thicker. After a quick look around, you and Calum agree to stay at the bar for the time being. Fighting your way back to the table would be more trouble than it was worth.
After talking about him touring and what it was like being in the band. You are working at a small entertainment company that couldn't imagine fame and what it was like in the spotlight. You laughed, and he looked at you with sincerity in his eyes and a sudden desire to touch arose and patted his knee. Sudden spark between the both of you made both of you stop. You looked up at him, and Calum looked at you softly. Something warm bloomed inside you.
Calum's hands slid under you and pulling your chair closer and leaning in he said, “Do you want to help me clean my shirt in the bathroom?” Your heart skipped a beat. Without giving yourself time to overthink it, you nodded.
Once you reached the bathroom, you held out your hand, expecting Calum to give you his stained shirt so you could help clean it. Instead, he opened the door and guided you inside before quietly locking it behind him.
You turned around, ready to ask for the shirt again, but stopped when he pulled it over his head and tossed it onto the counter. Your eyes immediately caught the tattoos covering his arms and chest. You stared for a moment longer than you meant to.
A smirk spread across his face. “You like what you see?”
Heat rushed to your cheeks. You quickly looked away and laughed. “Just hand me your shirt,” you said, trying to sound casual.
Embarrassed that you'd been caught staring, you held your hand out again. Instead of giving you the shirt, Calum stepped closer. His hand wrapped around your wrist and gently pulled you toward him. Before you knew it, his hands had settled on your waist, drawing you against his chest. Your knees bumped against his as the distance between you disappeared.
You could feel the warmth of his skin beneath your hands, and suddenly the crowded bar outside felt miles away. The room seemed smaller, quieter. For a moment, neither of you spoke. You looked up at him, your heart racing as his eyes met yours, and the stain on his shirt became the last thing on either of your minds.
In shock you say, “Getting handsy?” He leaned back slightly, just enough to meet your eyes, a playful smirk settling across his face. “Can I kiss you?” He said as his hand made its way to your cheek. “I thought you would never ask” You chuckle as his lips meet yours. His hands made its way down your hip, and he started rubbing slow circles.
The kiss felt like it was the missing piece of the puzzle. Your hands made it up to his neck, and you pulled him down, deepening the kiss and before he could pull away, and sound came past your lips against his mouth.
After he pulled away, he was panting and caressing your cheek. “I really want to do that again.” You laughed and said, “oh really-" Before you could finish your sentence, his lips smashed into yours. His thumb lingered against the outline of your cheekbone and put you against the wall. He broke away and said “Jump”. You jump, as he holds you against his thigh.
His movements with you start getting messier and sloppier, and the move he holds onto you. Your nails dig into his damp shirt and push his glasses up above his head. You hold back your whimper and bite your cheek. As his lips move down your neck and collarbone as he leaves marks on you, that will surely bruise and be there tomorrow.
He makes his way back up and kisses your forehead, and you kiss his nose. You laugh, "We should do that again sometime, and maybe your shirt will be dry that time.” Calum strokes your cheek and kisses you one last time. Your hand found his glasses, and you put them back on him. “You should let the glasses stay on.” You say as you turn around to leave, and he pulls you back. He holds you in his arms, “You come watch our show tomorrow. I’ll get you tickets and maybe you get something extra after the show.” He smirks. You smiled and let him guide you back to the table.
Both of you sat down, and everyone was eyeing you both down after seeing your lip gloss on Calum’s lips. Everyone burst into laughter. Ignoring everyone at the table, the head found his way to the base of his shoulder and his arm wrapped around your waist, and he kissed your forehead again.
For the first time all week, the constant noise in your head faded away, leaving only a sense of peace, and you never wanted to be left alone again.
