Five Things I'll never say to you

I said I'd do anything for you, Because I want to see you happy, But I have trouble admitting the fact That I need you More than you'll ever need me.

I started hurting myself again When I thought nobody cared about me, But I forced myself to stop When I started caring about you.

The day I told you Never to fall in love with me Was the day I knew I'd end up loving you.

I cry whenever you say nice things Because I still feel like I don't deserve you.

I'm afraid of ruining everything.

I hear songs that make me think of you sometimes. I get so lonely at times and I see myself finding my way back to you. My hand was on the phone... I thought I'd just say hi.

It would never work out. Every time I tried again, I found myself regretting it. You wouldn't get anything out of it, only more questions that will never be answered. It would only break your heart just a little bit more.

I wish forgetting was easy... but I guess there's a reason why it isn't.

Once I heard my mother talk About the time she tried to kill herself Her mother had driven her mad And she swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills "It had gotten that bad" She said "I just couldn't take it anymore" But she stayed up all night with the lights on Afraid to fall asleep Because she didn't want to die anymore I can't remember her reason why It didn't matter I wasn't surprised that she'd tried If I told my kids About all the times I hurt myself When I wanted to die But I couldn't I wonder if they would be surprised Or just relieved That I changed my mind

Moving On

Staring at a paper bag Full of what you would have called "memories" I wanted to call you And tell you everything The things you said you deserved to know The things I thought you didn't Every word I didn't know I'd wanted to say Until just then I wanted more than anything To tell you: That I loved you And I meant everything that I said You were the world to me At some point I believed in you and I believed in us Just not forever Because nothing lasts that long That I'm sorry For breaking you Over and over again I know the last time was the worst But at least it's the last I didn't call Because I wanted us to finally stop Hanging on so tightly To something That doesn't exist

Moving Out

I'd forgotten how many things I stored in these drawers Old notebooks and graded assignments Gone in the trash Without so much as a second look and then A folder Full of sticky notes And poems Yellow flowers you pulled off of a bush A portrait I'd drawn Cards from anniversaries, birthdays, and shows A CD of songs you wrote That somehow I never listened to A sloppily written letter promising your love Forever I only kept the portrait And the CD I couldn't keep the others There was only so much I could take with me And you, sadly Weren't one of them But there's something about all the time And effort That we put into things That I just couldn't let go of
