“ and who does, clark? the same people that imprisoned you — that sit back and watch as this happens? ” an empty laugh escapes hawkgirl, and she crosses her arms atop her chest. she looks up at clark, eyes narrowing as she studies him; kendra’s wholly familiar with this part, the judgment and expectations. “ i’m human and i did what was right in my eyes. i’ll deal with what comes. ” did he truly just call her naive? can’t he just leave? “ i need you to move on. i know what’s coming and i can handle it. ” there’s always consequences and dark times around the corner... it’s how her life works, it’s how her head works. but maybe this time she doesn’t want to take them on alone, and it’s why she’s shutting him out so desperately. “ why don’t you just go, superman? go pat yourself on the back. although, i give your speech a two out of ten. ”

" no one does, kendra. that's the whole point. " there's more edge to his words now, borne entirely from that innate sense of justice of his. the love he has for human life. clark's towering figure does not relent from her gaze. his eyes are open and willing even under her scrutiny — he shows no signs of discomfort. this isn't a discussion to him; it's a wake up call and a helping hand all in one. " we have the power to stop wars. we do it to save lives, not condemn them. ghurkos was a tyrant, he may have even been the worst of the worst, but you shouldn't have been the one to decide his fate. you shouldn't have stained your hands with his blood. there were other ways for him to answer to his crimes. legal ways, beyond you and me. they may be imperfect, but we have to believe that there's some justice in this world. 'cause if we don't, who will? "

he shakes his head at her counters, stands perfectly in place as she urges him out. " it's not a speech, kendra. i'm trying to have a conversation with you. if you know what's coming then you know for darn sure it won't be an easy road. you'll need people at your side. " clark takes a deep breath, lets silence ring between them a moment. he looks kendra over, stopping at her eyes — looking into them, seeing the truth that hides beneath bravado and the type of righteousness that comes with youth. " you're not a bad person, but they'll make you out to be one. i'm not going anywhere, because you will need someone to remind you what's really in your heart. you're not dealing with the aftermath of this by yourself, there isn't a chance in hell i'm letting that happen. " he takes another step closer. " i need to know that you understand what i'm trying to say to you. i need to know that this isn't the type of thing that you would ever do again. " clark tilts his head, only slightly. " tell me, kendra: would you kill again? "

❝ well okay okay. ❞ he concedes just like that. maybe he is not just a forgotten, lost kid anymore. at least he means something to the Kents. there’s that. ❝ you know i would do anything for you. you mush. ❞ & here he is, adopting words from Ma Kent, for whom he would burn the galaxy. ❝ HUH… ❞ he tells Clark so many unhinged stories that he genuinely does not remember what he shocked him with recently.

he’s a SUPER sharp man ; he wouldn’t forget if Peter had told him. ❝ she thinks you’re the best of Terrans, & that you deserve a better planet. she just jabs at Earth just ‘cause she can. ❞ after a moment of hesitation, Peter reveals what’s truly on his mind. ❝ i think she envies how we have a home planet, y’know ? hers was destroyed like your original one. she remembers the whole thing too. it sucks… ❞

clark is moved, of course he is. he receives the compliment with a smile, humbled to the point of lowering his gaze. a small chuckle escapes between his lips, breathy and brief. " she's kind for saying that. " it's hardly true, he wants to add, but fears peter might try and insist upon it, and clark is simply not built to sustain that kind of praise. " glad to hear the jab on earth is a joke. " that, he'd have been too quick to contest. to defend. yet that's not the only thing that stirs inside him. his love for the planet was one thing, but clark knew his place.

" pete, i don't — " i don't have a home planet. i'm not terran, he wants to say. but gamora's story quickly silences him. " so does kara. " clark says quietly, with a claw around his heart squeezing it for all its worth. the reminder of what his cousin has lost, of what happened to their family and home and the burdens she has to live with that clark was spared from never fail to make him shatter. " i can't imagine what it must be like, to have to see all of it, to live it. her and gamora, they're stronger than any of us could ever hope to be. my cousin, she's — she's the bravest person i know. "

he says the phrase, my phrase, and my face nearly betrays the laughter tickling my throat. does he hear it for himself? how entirely peculiar such a saying sounds in his voice, colored so heavily by his american accent? my fingers are swift to cover my smiling lips, until i pull myself together with a far more serious, concerned expression.

❛ do you speak the name of the goddess in vain? ❜ i whisper, eyes wide.

no actress am i- i will not be able to contain my laughter much longer. in fact, it's like a star twinkling in my expression already, how absolutely amused i am. although, knowing my strained relationship with all the goddesses and gods of olympus, perhaps one shall strike him down just for fun.

what is one bolt of lightening to the son of krypton?

" it was an accident, of course. it just escaped, rolled right outta my lips before i could help it! it comes with the territory, doesn't it? you spend enough time with a person, you pick up on some of their idioms. diana says it so often, it's engrained in my brain by now — alas, today, it decided to leave its enclosure in a moment of weakness. rao, i hope this doesn't count as cultural appropriation.
