London a city of dreams also known as Londinium when founded by the Romans in 43 AD is the capital of England & the United Kingdom. Located in the river Thames (also known as the Ganga of England), London is a leading metropolitan city, with the strengths in the arts, commerce, education, sports, fashion, entertainment, health care, tourism, finance & transport all contributing to its prominence. It has the fifth largest metropolitan area GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in the world & the largest in Europe, London has been described as world cultural capital. London is the worlds most visited city with about 30 million people flying every year from abroad.
London contains four World Heritages: Tower of London, Key Gardens, the site compromising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey & St. Margaret’s Church. The current Mayor of London is Boris Johnson; the administration of London is co-ordinated by the Great London Authority, based in City Hall, Southwark. London has a oceanic climate, similar to the southern Britain, despite been known as a rainy & dull city, London receives a less precipitation in a year than some other cities like Bordeaux at 923mm. winters in London are generally cold & chilly from November to March with Frost occurring averagely two times a week in the sub-urban areas. London experienced its lowest temperature during the winter of 2010 that was -14 degree Celsius.
London is divided into 33 districts such as City of London, City of Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, Tower Hamlets, Barnet, Hillingdon etc. Such names have remained in use through tradition, each referring to a local area with its own distinctive character, but without current official boundaries. London’s building does not follow a particular architectural style, partly due to the varying age of many of the monuments & buildings, some buildings are constructed through Portland Stone, others by white stucco.
There are as many as 300 official languages in London estimated 8,174,100 populations in 2011 & many religions. Talking about the religion, 58.2% people are identify themselves as Christians, 8.5% Muslims, 4.1% Hindu, 2.1% Jewish, 1.5% Sikh, 0.8% Buddhist, 0.2% other & around 24.5% not stating their religion. London generates approximately 20 per cent of the United Kingdom GDP that is somewhere around 446 billion dollars. London is the biggest centre of higher education teaching with its 43 universities form the largest concentration of higher education in Europe.[19] In 2008/09 it had a higher education student population of around 412,000 (approximately 17 per cent of the UK total).
