Small Space Gardens

Hi, I am just your average bachelor exploring the world of backyard and container gardening from the aspect of confined spaces, limited water sources and using only solar power all on a limited budget. This blog will detail each of my projects from start to finish with step by step instructions so you can duplicate these projects from home. I will also focus these garden projects around eatable landscaping. This all sounds good, right? Join me on this adventure. Questions, suggestions and or project ideas welcomed.

Since water restrictions have impacted everything I decided to try and see if I could grow some sod in the garage. The cat loves it!

Project update: One week in and the cuttings are doing great. I'm going to try this again with a rooted plant.

Latest hydroponics experiment. Trying micro hydroponic. Using an led grow light in an existing lamp. I used rockwool one of those glass air plant containers a small air pump and river rocks to help reduce the amount of water used. I selected a cactus since they are hardy plants. This is day one: Aug 2, 2015.... Will post progress

Project One: The Master Bedroom Window View.

So here is project one. As you can see the master bedroom is at the far end of the property. My condo is the last in the row of units and thus backs up to a chain link fence, a dirt field and then a canal which finally dead ends at a cement wall for residential housing. Security is some what of a focus so lighting this area is important as there is a gate that opens out to the chain link fence and field.

Besides the security, this is a horrible view, plus there is very little privacy between my bedroom and the bedroom across from me.

The Goal:

Create a space that is visual appealing, increases privacy between condo units and promotes lighting and security for the unit and back yard. All while incorporating eatable plants where ever possible

So, I drew out a basic diagram and list of items needed for my first project: Master Bedroom Window Here I will create an eatable privacy fence, weave in solar icicle lights, fence lights and a natural bed.

5/23/2015:

These are the before pictures of the area that I will be working with. I live in a residential condo, 3 bed 2 bath, with a small long backyard. The dimensions are as follows; the yard is 68 ft long by 6 ft wide with a fence that is 6 ft high. The owners of the property out of fear of water fines (I live in Ca) capped off the water spouts in the front and back yard so watering my garden will be a challenge. Also, there is an electrical outlet, however, I will only use solar power. The goal will be an attractive, eatable backyard that I can entertain in, prepare meals from and enjoy at the lowest cost I can find.
