The photo above documents the dangers of giving me unristricted access to a library.  not only do we have UNLIMITED borrowing privileges and self-check out; but, as you can see from the pic of the exterior, it is a very fine building.  A beacon in the night, I might say.  The best thing of all is it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the term.  That is right, I have 24/7 access to a library.  A library at a university that is one of the best art schools in the hemisphere.  Did I mention the amazing collection of DVDs?  They also have about a million computers and you can use your student ID card to pay for print-outs or as a copy card (only 4p!).  I am not even going to go into having access to online journals through Goldsmiths.  Did I spend the first week of classes aquainting myself with pub life or at any of the rather impressive list of activities the student union organized?  No.  I spent it in the library and staying up all night reading articles on JSTOR.  You know, those ones they make you pay for but that are FREE if you are a student.  And it only gets better, my friend.  I have access to the Senate House Library too.  If I time it right, I can also enjoy a delicious FREE lunch provided by the Hare Krishnas served daily on the SOAS campus. Being a student is grand, my friend, just grand.

The Last Living Taxidermist

Work has waned for me in the busy city;

Never a core clientele, never forthcoming;

I’m forced into a skulking hunt down alleyways,

disused canal paths,

under bridges and around their silty tide-marked columns,

tiptoeing and lunging over

cocooned caterpillar corpses, laid out in crusty sleeping bags.

I dredge the shadows for carrion foxes

and moribund pigeons, stamping them out,

only to invigorate them in enlivened poses,

stuffed stiff, full of cotton organs. Waiting, mute

they stare unloved from my window,

for a lost gaud-adoring country gent to see their eyes,

check his gait against the crowds, and fall in love.

Around 350 protesters marching from the Home Office in Marsham Street. The demonstration have handed over a petition demanding amnesty for 2700 international students at London Metropolitan University who are threatened with deportation after the UKBA revoked its right to sponsor them.

Independent Vs Identikit

The much-loved Café Crema demonstrates it's pride in being the only branch. Are independent shops and businesses better than chain stores? Or does the rows of empty shop-fronts and chicken eateries in New Cross suggest we may need a mix of both?
