My Audience
Over the last couple of days, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the analytics features that are attached to my social media accounts. Usually the following or coming to my page happens between the hours of 12pm and 4pm. When it comes to LinkedIn or Twitter, the people that follow me tend to be more professional or are in a profession that I am currently interning in. For example, I get a lot of fashion recruiters adding me to their network on LinkedIn. Since I’ll be graduating in the spring, my page views have increased drastically since August. For Twitter, I get a lot of journalists whether they just be ones that work for a trade magazine or people that just enjoy writing. I’m an editorial intern for CollegeFashionista so that makes sense to me. My posts that feature media usually get more engagement, retweets and favorites than my tweets with just text. I also usually gain more followers from a tweet with media as well. My friends may retweet something I say, and their friends may be able to relate or find what I said humorous so they’ll decide to follow me. I don’t often post on Facebook aside from talking to family members so that wasn’t worth tracking. For Intstagram, I usually get a lot of bloggers or swimsuit accounts following me. Within the last 4 days, I’ve had 6 different accounts follow me. I included in my Instagram profile that I’m a swimsuit enthusiast and my different internship titles. From this exercise I’ve learned how important it is to include what you’re involved in/interested in in your bios. I have found some amazing companies because of it,
I found both of these displays to be very compelling. I think this one shows the fun and elegant side of the Aerie brand. Yes, they sell underwear and bras, but the set up is very holiday ready. They are showing that even your underwear can be holiday themed, and not in the stereotypical, cheesy Santa Claus and reindeer way. The elegant beading and color ways show a very dressy way to ring in the holiday. I also like that the more basic, simplistic styles are to the left and right. This puts the focus on the holiday collection.
I think this display is also very compelling because of the marketing in the back. This can give women that boost of confidence they need when purchasing bras. They can look up and be reassured that you don’t need to look like the model who is wearing it. I also like that their activewear leggings are right in front of the marketing as well. They’re promoting body positivity and indirectly encouraging an active lifestyle at the same time.
My Skill
For this project, my sister wanted a cuter, more fitting version of this shirt. She wanted the shirt to be flattering to her tiny shape. So I decided to hem the bottom of the shirt about 2 inches so the shirt could sit on the waistband of her jeans. I then decided to take some length off the arms of the shirt. Instead of simply hemming them, I stitched them so they were permanently rolled. This way she didn’t have to worry about them coming undone or having to try and recreate the sleeve every time she wore the shirt. I learned that T-shirts are the easiest way to showcase your skill. You can make all of your tops unique and fitting to your body. Looking cute while representing your team isn’t bad either.
Final Purse
My final production of the bag would be a lot more expensive because I used multiple fabric paints. Matte paper is more expensive as well so that upped my production costs. It took me longer to make than my other versions. Overlooking the numbers now, I probably would have upped my wage. I guess I’m so used to not valuing my work as much because I’m still a student, but this exercise showed me that I can step up out of my comfort zone with wage because of the time I spent constructing the bag. I came up with the suggested retail price by multiplying total cost and profit by another 20%. I was just experimenting because I know that in order to make a higher profit, I would need a higher markup. Looking at this now, I would probably only suggest the retail price be $50.
Handbag Construction
I constructed this mock up out of matte paper and glue. I used a ribbon for the handle because I thought the size was fitting. My calculations are rough, but as of now the twill version of the purse would be most expensive (even when factoring in the other fixtures that I wish I had).Twill was the most expensive, and I think it would make the most sense to use for a purse. A perfect addition in accessories for the winter. My sateen purse would be the second most expensive to create. I personally don’t think I ‘d ever use sateen to make a purse though.I don’t think the fabric would be durable enough for the silhouette of this bag. My dobby version was the least expensive of the three. I think it could make a really cute, inexpensive work bag.
Production Costs
Although, this necklace doesn’t take long to make, the brooch is going to the most expensive item. I personally don’t think it would sell for $18. If this were something I were trying to mass produce, I would want a more quality ribbon. I would probably go for a ribbon that has more support. I didn’t even feel right pricing it at $18. The price of the brooch alters everything. I went into this thinking that this could be a sold as a really inexpensive item, but after doing my research on (affordable) quality brooches, I was proven wrong.
Crossed Inspiration
I got inspiration from the books in my photographs being from two very different kinds of backgrounds, ultimately creating very different sounds. This blouse is the crossing of both.
Create an Accessory
I took inspiration from the color of the Pharrell book (which can be seen in the gem and the ribbon color). This piece was meant to be a statement piece. I took inspiration from owning books of musicians. The reason we buy their work is because of the statements they make. That's how I crafted this accessory.
There were about 3 different sizes that fit me pretty well. I found this exercise to be extremely helpful when it comes to shopping for denim. That’s the time when I usually feel the most self conscious because unlike most tops, pants sizes have a numerical number. This pair of black jeans is what fit me the best. When it came to trying on the same size, I had difficulty fitting into them at least twice (as opposed to the other 4 pairs that slid on easily). The two pairs that didn’t fit as well, were both stiff and hard to get my leg through the opening. What I learned is that it is always beneficial to try on jeans. Sizing varies between brands, and sometimes you may pick up the pair that doesn’t fit the company’s standard of the product.
